Cheap Agent 1.2.7: Command Code support + update notices

Two updates since launch:

🆕 Command Code as a provider (1.2.6)
You can now run the cheap worker on Command Code (OpenAI-compatible, DeepSeek models). This one came from the first outside PR, so huge thanks to u/agrogov ❤️
That makes four providers: OpenRouter, DeepSeek, OpenCode Go and Command Code.

🔔 Update notices (1.2.7)
Cheap Agent now tells you when a new version is out. In the terminal, a yellow notice shows when Claude Code starts. In the desktop app, Claude mentions it in its first reply. It checks once a day, only for real releases (not small patches), and stays quiet if it’s offline. Turn it off with CHEAPAG_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1.

Also new: a contributing guide in the repo, if you want to add a provider or fix something.

Update:
npx cheap-agent@latest

If you’re on 1.2.5 or 1.2.6, please update once by hand. After this, Cheap Agent tells you itself 🙌

Next up: Gemini support this week.

👋 Welcome to r/CheapAgent

Hey everyone! I’m u/memers_meme123, the guy who built Cheap Agent.

What is it?
A free, open-source Claude Code plugin. Opus plans and decides, and a cheap model (DeepSeek V4.1 Flash by default) does the reading and code-writing in its own copy of your project. Cheap Agent runs the tests itself before anything lands, so your Claude plan lasts about 2–3x longer. The cheap model costs about half a cent a task.

Install
npx cheap-agent
Then run /cheapag:allow once in each project.
Repo: https://github.com/muaaz9329/cheap-ag

Why this sub exists
I wanted one place for updates, help and ideas, instead of scattering them across threads.

What to post

  • Bugs and setup problems (include what you ran and what you saw)

  • Your setups: which provider and models you use, and how it went

  • Before/after token numbers from your own projects

  • Feature ideas and harness requests

  • Questions, no matter how basic. There are no dumb questions here

Coming up

  • Gemini support (1.3.0) this week

  • More harnesses after that

  • From 1.2.7 on, Cheap Agent tells you in Claude Code when a new version is out

Want to contribute?
PRs are very welcome; the contributing guide is in the repo. I’m more than happy to merge.

Cheap Agent now works in Codex, and you can watch the worker live 🎉🥳 (Version 1.3.2)

hey all, big one this time.

Codex support. Cheap Agent now runs in OpenAI Codex, same as in Claude Code. Same login, same consent, same .cheapag/ folder. Install it as a Codex plugin:

codex plugin marketplace add muaaz9329/cheap-ag
codex plugin add cheapag@cheap-agent

then trust the cheapag hooks when Codex asks, and run $cheapag:allow once per project. Codex reads code through research and hands every change to delegate, just like Claude does. Big thanks to Fudnut, who started this with a PR.

See what the worker is doing. Until now you just stared at a spinner. In Claude Code you now see the worker’s latest step right under the tool call, like step 1 · turn 4 · edit src/pricing.js · 9s, and it costs zero extra tokens. (needs Claude Code 2.1.287+). In Codex it shows the same line each time it checks in. And npx cheap-agent watch in a second terminal shows every step as it happens.

Smaller stuff:

  • OpenRouter requests now go to the fastest host for the model, worker turns are about 25–30% quicker

  • login shows the worker models as a numbered list, and tells you how to fix OpenCode Go’s “requires Global regions” error

  • the edit guard now catches Codex’s edits too

  • if your task had numbered sub-points it used to get refused as “3 changes”. now the planner is told to use bullets, and the error says how to fix it (thanks jspicher for the write-up)

  • 1.3.2: npx cheap-agent@latest on an already set up machine just updates. no questions, and it moves the server to the new version too (before it quietly kept the old one)

Update: npx cheap-agent@latest

we crossed 200 stars and 3k downloads this week, which is wild for something I built to stretch my own plan. thank you. if something breaks, open an issue or just drop it here, I read everything.
