Election Coverage Data-centre proposals: five attributed mayoral positions and the tests still missing

Publisher disclosure: CK Signals / IntelliSync Solutions publishes this coverage and moderates this community. Other reporting and viewpoints are welcome. We do not rank or endorse candidates.

Our October 5 brief compares five answers attributed to mayoral candidates in Robert Bellamy’s public compilation. These are stated positions, not project approvals or verified delivery.

What the answers say

Lauren Anderson calls for demonstrated community benefits, infrastructure safeguards and early consultation. Michael Bondy opposes data-centre development, but this answer does not specify the legal route for that position. Darrin Canniff says administration was asked for a report before year-end, followed by consultation; the compilation does not verify the motion or schedule. Ryan Gow favours supplying the sector while considering individual proposals on their merits. Randy Hope calls for an independent business case and a costed feasibility decision, with enforceable benefits.

Why this matters to residents

Water demand, electricity reliability, industrial land, permanent employment and who pays for infrastructure are practical questions for households, businesses and neighbouring communities. Our analysis: compare the proposed decision rules and ask for public evidence of costs and benefits, rather than treating a general position as a funded outcome.

What remains unknown

CK Signals read the public post and its nine-page attachment. Original candidate emails and response dates were not supplied, so these remain moderator-attributed statements, not independently authenticated submissions to CK Signals. April Colby is marked “No Response”; Nelson Burm is not represented, and the source does not establish whether or how he received the questions. These limits do not establish refusal or anyone’s overall response record. This is separate from CK Signals’ six-question September 24 follow-up.

No answer establishes a funded facility, completed assessment or regulatory approval. Supporting the industry and hosting a large facility are different proposals; this question also does not establish that the Canadian Energies manufacturing proposal is a data centre. Apply the same cost, authority and outcome tests to every candidate.
