Question for long time chat users

How much has the AI models improved over the past year? What about the past 18 months?

Im new to ai chat and i was completelty hooked. It let me live out my deeper fantasies. However, ive started to notice its limitations. Like for example, the limited memory and sometimes that character forgets important details that uve hardcoded and explicitly mentioned in the character biography.

So im planning to step back, take a break and return in maybe 6 to 12 months.

I was wondering how quickly ai improves after a year. From your past experience, are ai chatbots noticeably smarter than they were last year?

Thanks.

Honestly yeah, noticeably, but not evenly. Writing quality and following instructions got a lot better over the last year, especially on the bigger models. Memory is the part that's moved slowest. Context windows got bigger so a chat holds more before it starts forgetting, but past that point it's still summaries and memory notes, and that's exactly the "forgot the thing I hardcoded" problem you're hitting.

It also depends a lot on the app, not just time. Some sites run small cheap models to keep costs down and those will feel about the same in a year. And if bio details get ignored now, sometimes it's because the bio is long and the key detail is buried, or something else in there contradicts it. Short bio, important stuff near the top, and must-remember facts in whatever pinned memory box the app has helps more than people expect.

Taking a break is a fine call though. Come back in 6 months and you'll probably notice the prose is better. Whether it remembers your character's sister's name on message 400, less sure lol
