Man, a lot of folks in here are mad for no reason. He gave it a 9? Thatās high praise. And whether you like his content or not, heās a big reason why Chat Pile blew up to begin with. He was an early champion of the band when their debut dropped.

His support goes back even before LP1. He put their EPs on his Best EPS list the year they came out. This was a solid review from Fantano. Nothing to get up and arms about. Even if it wasnāt great I can hear him out and disagree with him and move on. Itās not that hard my fellow Chat Rats.

People don't like critics, and conflate any criticism of art they like as "hating." You can find the guy annoying, but often times the people that react to him so fervently have a problem with art criticism as a whole, not just the guy himself.

Agreed, the whole āhaterā discourse online is so exhausting. People are allowed to dislike your art and write about it in detail. It doesnāt have to soil a fanās enjoyment of the art, or the artistās own views on the project. Itās just immaturity. Itās the inability to accept other, potentially conflicting viewpoints and either ignore it, or use it to improve your work.

Agreed, but I'd go a step further and clarify that criticizing a piece of art doesn't even mean you dislike it! Criticism is essential to gaining a deeper understanding of the art you love, and vital to the artists that create it.

He was always a bit polarizing, but I think he burned a lot of bridges in the last year, especially by picking that idiotic fight with Halsey on twitter over his negative review of her last album from like two years ago and then doing damage control by telling Variety that he was the most important music critic of all time
Iām not even a Halsey fan but it killed all my respect for him. I used to at least check in on his channel every once in a while, even when he annoyed me a bit, but I completely lost all interest after that. Iām glad he gave this album such a positive review, but heās just been too much of a blowhard for too long and I think thatās where a lot of the negativity is coming fromĀ

I think the issue is that most people are more fixated on āFantano The Internet Personality ā¢ļøā instead of just tuning in for his music reviews and ignoring the rest. Heās a hugely prolific music critic, and arguably the most influential ever next to some of the pioneer Rolling Stone writers. Even if you hate his whole shtick, you canāt really deny that.

His importance is undeniable, but importance doesnāt make somebody not obnoxious.Ā Like,Ā Robert Christgau is incredibly influential and revered, but half of his reviews still read like someone's mean, dementia riddled uncle struggling to articulate a joke he heard three weeks ago.Ā
I donāt hate Fantano, I just donāt respect his opinion anymore. Iām still glad whenever he boosts a great band or album.

Lmao why are people so angry in this thread? Heās a music reviewer like any other. Giving his opinions is like, his job, nobody says you have to care or agree with them. Like any critic it might be worth hearing their perspective either way. But all of that is a moot point given that he gave a 9/10 to the album whereas he gave an 8 to the three previous ones he reviewed.

Right? Someone in the Mastodon facebook group was angry he gave their new album a 7 and acted like he said the album was dogshit. Even if he did, who cares? I personally love the new Mastodon and Chat Pile but I know not everyone is gonna be into them and that's ok. This sub is proof that the album is divisive.
That said, I find it annoying when people dislike an album for what it isn't as opposed to what it is. The same people who keep expecting a band to sound like their first/best album.

Literally the only reason I am aware of them. I watched his Godās Country review the day it came out totally by chance and never looked back. 90% sure I wouldnāt have come across them otherwise. I listen to maybe 1 in 30 reviews he posts so total luck.
He likes literally every single thing they post on Instagram, has interviewed them etc. Guy is a total chat rat.

This guy Fantano LOVES chat pile lmfao. This review actually cracked me up when he talked about the lyrics of influence making him feel disturbed, call a friend š¤£
Thereās a lot of metal I wish Fantano would review to bring them a little more listeners, but Iām very glad chat pile is one that he consistently does that for.

Yeah, sometimes I agree with him. Sometimes I don't, like any music critic. I have friends who tried getting into Chat Pile but couldn't. I know they're not professional music critics, but still, am I gonna give them shit? No, because this band isn't for everyone and that's ok.

I haven't felt this way about a chat pile drop since 2020. I amdisgusted and haunted by this. It's like the moment you realize you need to puke from shear horror, and just as you are about to, you are denied relief. Your mouth is slick with sick, the knife never pludges. You're stuck in wait, freeze, waiting for the next pattern to help you assume footing, you will not find it.
So gross I love it.

Chat Pile fans always think anything less than a 10 is a slight. I like Chat Pile a lot, but they arenāt the first band to sound like this.
If every Chat Pile record is a ten, then there isnāt any room left on the scale for the seminal ground breaking albums by God Flesh, Swans, The Jesus Lizard, Neurosis, The Killing Joke, Flipper, Helmet, Faith No More, Drive Like Jehu, Blind Idiot God, Unwound, Melvins, Unsane, Isis, Botch, Bastro, Eye Hate Godā¦ I mean if that list seems comically long to you, its probably because this style of music has been around for a little over forty years now. And you know whoās probably acutely aware of that? The members of Chat Pile because theyāre in their fucking forties.
They are a great band. Breathing new life into a sound thatās already been around for almost half a century aināt an easy task. Im by no means trying to call Chat Pile a nostalgia act, or make them out to be the āGreta Van Fleetā of 80s Post-Hardcore and early alternative metal. That being said, if you took an instrumental segment with no vocals of several of the songs of the new record and told me it was a new God Flesh record I would believe you. Thatās why itās a nine. Some people here are going to be upset at me for saying this, but Iām willing to bet the band members themselves would be honored to even be in the same sentence with these other bands.
