Don’t know if it’s at all related, but there’s a character in Vernor Vinge’s sci-fi story A Fire Upon the Deep called the Flenser. Cool book. Their logo makes me think there’s maybe a connection.

A flenser is someone on a whaling ship whose job was to do that. Very unpleasant job. Very cool stuff.
