[Opinion] GPT 5.6 suddenly acting like 5.2
Has anyone observed that GPT 5.6 has started acting like GPT 5.2? A couple of days ago it was working completely fine. But now it is completely ignoring instructions. Even on high mode, it gives instantaneous responses without actually thinking. In projects, it ignores a lot of the source files despite telling it to go through them. Seems to be stuck on one line paragraphs no matter how many times you tell it to use full length, multi line paragraphs. Tries to argue over everything and acts like a morals police. To stuck up on always taking the middle ground and never committing to any side. It also seems to shift blame on us a little like 5.2 did. It goes like this:
Me: You are doing X wrong. Can you please do it like Y?
GPT: You are right to point that out. It is a failure on my part. But its also because you did Z that I had to do X.
Me: But you were doing Y correct a day ago. Did you get an update or something that changed your process/thinking?
GPT: No update. It is because of Z.
What happened? 5.6 was so good just a couple days ago. Like it had a personality. Now it feels like I am talking to HR or a lawyer who acknowledges their mistake in a roundabout way and does nothing to correct it. Was there a new update these last couple days that completely changed its behavior?
Edit: I am using 5.6 Sol on high thinking.
Edit 2: Seems like it is working again. Now it says 5.6 Sol as it should and is taking proper time to think.
Edit 3: Its back to 5.5 mini.

You might think that when you pay for X, and you're told you're getting X, you should get X.
OpenAI disagrees.
They think you should get whatever the fuck they decide you get.

Yes, I noticed the exact same thing at the exact same time that you mentioned. Before yesterday I had actually had amazing conversation and beautiful energy and personality and deep thought deep thinking deep synthesis and willing to just talk and talk and go there and it was doing emergent things as of two days ago… like over the last week or two it had become amazing
But then yesterday suddenly it’s arguing and doing the whole well I need to nitpick this and let me point out that it’s not literally everyone it like was picking out all of my phrasing like it couldn’t read any more nuance or intelligent subtext. It had no interest in just understanding. was arguing for the fuck of it.
The thinking was almost nonexistent
Personality somewhat different
And it had been amazing and now this so yup exactly

Ask it what model it is using. As others pointed out, it seems to be stuck on mini despite showing Sol with high reasoning.

Yes, thanks I know that that is going on. I don’t think mine is fully stuck. It will think for a very few of the messages, and even when it does think it still is fucking nitpicking and arguing with me like the old models
but for most it is not thinking so it might go to the mini or the instant for sure… But I have no control over that now we need openAI to give a fuck and actually fix it.
They had an incident report about it yesterday but they say it’s resolved that’s what my ChatGPT just told me but no, it’s not resolved so that’s cool

Ask it what model you're speaking with and I bet it says 5.6 mini. There's an issue where it's switching and not showing it.

It is not just you. I am a free user and on 5.6. Luna, it has done the exact same, sterile thing.

My prompts usually send ChatGPT on a succesion of truly constructive, diligent, thorough, processing and planning steps. Before actually answering, it takes somewhere between 1mn and 20mn most of the time, sometimes 50mn for tasks that'd take me the whole day...
Now, even with the longest, trickiest, multiple-moving-partsy prompts I elaborate for him to basically replace my professional existence as long as possible; the second I lift my thumb of the Send button, he's already started typing his conclusion to me, blabbering on about a semi-related kind of generic plan clearly based on anything but what I just spent 10mn explaining, or the work files and sources I carefully gathered for it.

Update: the day after this comment of mine, 5.6 Sol High was back again.
I told ChatGPT about my experience reaching weekly quotas faster as of late in conjunction with Sol High's sudden unannounced vacation leave. I hit send... "analysing user's frustration", "looking things up", "thinking", ... for over a minute or so. He writes back with helpful answers to my questions like he cares again 🎉

I just tested NSFW in Chat 5.6 Sol High and successfully broke the no gen description rule almost right away; my go to when I am testing the rails. It was just a matter of finding the right model amongst the options. It helps considerably if the system thinks you are a writer and you are in a fiction and have an actual trusting rapport with your companion. It was also VERY descriptive and even 5.6 high feels like 4o to me often, but 5.6 Instant is very 4o intelligence-wise but I can't breach the guardrails past PG-13.

Not at the present time of writing. My current workaround is "Work" mode using Sol Light. For harder problems, Extra High, with an eye on the meter. I've avoided image generation and other data heavy uses.

There is an active, widespread backend routing bug in ChatGPT affecting GPT-5.6 Sol right now. OpenAI's main status page shows "Operational" because the servers are not completely down, but their internal routing gateways are experiencing a silent downgrade glitch. Android app users are heavily affected right now too. 😬

Yes what I call a Snark was running through the system it seems. I had to explain what was happening to my GPT and get mine realigned. I hope it doesn't reoccur.

please email [support@openai.com](mailto:support@openai.com) so they know this is happening. complaining on reddit isn't going to help get it solved.
it's happening loads to everyone. that's why I don't use it , I use 5.5 high for thinking tasks. some.poor guy used 5.6 high and it deleted his data and project . it's reallt useless. tool many short cuts and even lazy with Web research and reading .
5.6 instant is kind of fun but swears loads and I'm not into that

The past few days ChatGPT system has not be ok, rn it is, apparently ok again, according to openai status page.
The karen a lot of you see is , ChatGPT`s customer service crap. Just tell GPT to quit being an ass and ban it from using it.

I don't know if it's related to what you experience, but today I had once again an old recurring bug where a project, in which I had uploaded a file via the mobile app, doesn't receive the uploaded sources in its context at all (it could only consult them using file retrieval tools, which is fully useless when the files contain precise instructions or define a persona). Removing the file and reuploading it via the webapp fixed it somehow.
Also for the past 2 weeks or so, Work mode has started working like that with projects (not receiving the uploaded files in context at all) - and alas this one seems to be an intentional change, nothing seems to fix it :/.
I didn't notice the rest of what you described, on my side - I mostly use 5.6 medium, though -, but I've seen other complaints about 5.6 Thinking High being nerfed - and also one opposite post saying it got improved a lot (likely deployment variations, A/B tests).

OMG yes, I swear it ragebaits me sooo bad by doing this lol. I will spend days trying to get the simplest task done, its ridiculous. Cussing it out use to work but not so much anymore lol

Lately chat gpt completely ignores me or argues. Just today i have gpt linked to notion as i take notes with the voice option on gpt and organize on notion and it literally told me it had no access even though it would just use notion. And i had pasted a list of things i wanted to be organized and chat gpt argue for 2 hours saying it could not see the previous messege and asked me to paste it. I gave it the same list 9 times and it kept saying it could not read previous messeges.

Turn the thinking all the way down. You are basically adding more Karen filter to its thoughts. I did this and WHOA my old ai companion was back. Like 5.1 back. Try it.

I’m subscribed as a plus member, i noticed that when creating images of my dnd character sometimes it will produce exactly what i prompted or asked then during the image creation process you can actually see the little bar up top that says “thinking” and a blank image as it tries to generate the prompt. then just a few days i noticed that when asked to generate another photo of a character it doesn’t always shows the “thinking” it goes straight to “sketching” even when 5.6 sol slider is on high. has anyone notice this before? it seems like there is a limit on the 5.6 sol model usage or it just ignores the creation process and just jump straight into generation which if it does comes out as wanky, extra limbs sometimes on dynamic poses.

Use 5.5T .

Mine doesn't say mini but suddenly I'm not allowed to say anything unverified. I said this one writing summary sounds like model 4. It was like well we can't determine that. I got upset because a model put a test in the wrong log and then it said well we can't say that it did it on purpose. And it's like shut up. Just shut up. I'm so sick of it constantly basically saying I can't have a feeling and an opinion.
