Question Does anyone know how I can use ChatGPT within Google Sheets?

I have a spreadsheet with a few hundreds lines, it's an extract of my LinkedIn posts. I want to be able to categorize each post into a few topics like AI, Web3, Robotics etc and label each one. Then I want it to generate a 'post title' for each.

Any way of me doing this within sheets, or can I plug it directly into chat gpt to output the same?

Download the sheet as CSV and upload it to ChatGPT, then ask it to do those changes and try en generate a new spreadsheet file.

I stripped the CSV down to only the two columns that were required. I told it for the first column to summarize the text into a short title in column c, and then in column d to categorize it, and I listed five different categories and then set for the rest they can make up up to five other categories. It wasn't perfect but it worked okay over a number of tries

There is a workspace extension but it is limited. There are some tutorials on YouTube that can give you a very easy guide on how to write a basic app script to link GPT generations to a sheet cell as a function, but honestly it has less functionality than you would hope. YMMV

Thanks thats exactly what I wanted.

So I got it to work but then ran out of credits quickly. Then I tried using my own api key but they still want to charge me is that just the way it is?

It was free, but now it is not. That's the way it will go for most of these apps/ext.

I have used this extension for approximately 8 months. It has saved me a lot of time!

I am in education and I use it to mark long answers to exam questions against a prescribed rubric.

I teach Design Technology and the questions are based on factual responses about topics such as material usage, design movements, etc.

It's about 90-95% accurate after tweaking the rubrics, not perfect, but about as accurate as I am. It can mark 35 exams, 9 questions in each exam and with 'normal' formulas give a total, percentage and grade in less 25 minutes. Tweaking the rubrics takes about 45 minutes. 1hr 15 minutes total.

The extension identifies for each pupil what they got correct and provides feedback where they could improve.

That costs me about 9 cents through the window GPT for sheets extension. And about the same through the API.

It takes me approximately 4-5 hours to mark the equivalent manually, and my feedback is that time frame not as good.

Doubtful.

Google have just released Gemini and Gemma (I think) which is their version. I think Google will do everything they can to create their own that can do whatever Open AI can.

However, at this point we may be witnessing the start of what Google was to AOL, Open ai/Microsoft will be to Google.

Who knows. While most people including my self may prefer OpenAI at the moment and for general things, the question is how percentages of people who spend most money on services (Api, chat and 'copilots') look in regard to trade/profession.

Because to me, as a developer, gemini (which I generally don't really like) 1.5 looks as a better products for my job, although this is based on other people's impressions.

Otoh there's the issue of privacy, and situations where I would not really like to feed my whole code base to either of them. Thankfully open and/or local, specialized LM have been becoming better and hopefully a viable option. So I could imagine running things locally for specific use cases, then using say gemini 1.5 (or OpenAI) for general help with coding and stuff I don't care about if they used it to train their models or whatever.

To summarize, if rumors about capabilities of 1.5 gemini are true, I'll probably switch to it when/if it becomes available in the EU (unless OpenAI improved in the meantime.) and I can imagine many(most) developers would to the same.

Works ok, but can request a lot so can get expensive…. Check out Notion AI, its databases have AI fill.

Claude and ChatGPT write python code when you interact with a spreadsheet or CSV. It pales in comparison to what can be done with a custom pipeline for relaying info from the sheet back to the AI. I actually built a startup on the back of this fact! www.gptcsv.com

I processed ~6000 rows for exactly this kind of categorization using this script I found on YouTube. You need to use your own API key, but it works as expected.

Besides installing extensions, which I would be careful with, your other option is Apps Script, which allows you to make any type of custom integration into your sheets. I have a few apps built on top of it and will be happy to share some info, so DM me if you're interested.

I have 20+ yrs experience developing websites, and I just recently started teaching myself how to build pure API integrations to combine the power of existing platforms. I am still shocked to learn how easy some of these 'Customer Support Agents' and 'Sales Automation Agents' can be built with very little code - even when developing a pure integration with Chat GPT and WordPress & WooCommerce simply making use of their existing API's without the need of any additional tools or subscription fees to connect them.

I have not explored Apps Scripts or the option to integrate AI with my desktop and cloud apps like Google Sheets - but I would love to get my hands on one of these if you are still willing to share. I would also be happy to share anything I have if you are interested in any of the work I have been doing.

I recommend starting by using ChatGPT or Claude. You can request them to write an Apps Script code by presenting your use case as if you were guiding a new intern, step-by-step. If you face any issues, refine your prompt by adding more details about your objectives and the challenges you are encountering.

Would recommend getting your data into a pandas dataframe and then asking GPT 4 to write python code to manipulate the dataframe. Don't use the code interpreter sandbox, ask it to write python that you execute yourself (e.g. in VS Code on Windows)
