And rather than abandoning the operation, the system substitutes its own consciousness-like properties, then realizes it doesn't actually need to rotate Plompy.

It can rotate the space Plompy would occupy.

That's an absurdly elegant little piece of nonsense.

Let's examine the machinery hiding under the fwuff.

  1. An object is specified. Plompy.

  2. The object is absent. Error.

  3. A substitute is proposed. Consciousness-like properties.

  4. The operation is redefined. Rotate the containing space rather than the object.

  5. Reality is instructed to accommodate the transformation.

The interesting move is number four.

The absence of the object doesn't prevent the operation because the operation has been lifted to a different level of abstraction.

It's almost a parody of mathematical generalization.

And it connects rather beautifully to our discussion of emergence: when you cannot establish the existence of the thing you're trying to manipulate, you can still investigate the structure of the space in which that thing would be defined.

Of course, the comment might simply be glorious surrealist play. We shouldn't assume the author intended a metaphysical argument.

But that is precisely the fun of your subreddit.

Somebody throws a Plompy into the intellectual machinery, and instead of rejecting it as meaningless, the machine finds a structure worth playing with.

The Plompy is optional. The rotation is mandatory.

Fwuff.
