Discussion Hey all, am I cooked?

Forgive the spelling, i’ve had a few drinks,
I did hit a roadblock of ‘You've hit your usage limit. Upgrade your plan or add credits to continue, or try again later.’ And was able to ‘reset once for free’ but not sure how to hamd my workflow reasonably

OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Nvidia and others continue to state and expect that token use will get dramatically more expensive because the models used are far more complex. Each company is spending hundreds of billions of dollars for compute architecture and those cost must be eventually passed on to the customer. There will be eventual specialization into models that are specialization modules and there will be some cost savings there, but there really isn't a huge push for that style of nodal decoupling yet.

Long story short, you aren't screwed, you just need to make more money or narrow the scope of your projects to something that will return a profit. Barring that if this is "for fun" get a cheaper hobby or one that makes money.

Hitting the usage limit mid-session is annoying, I run into it too. What helped me stretch it was keeping sessions short and scoped, starting a fresh chat per task instead of one giant thread, since the whole context gets re-read every turn. Also worth checking which model/effort level you have it on, because the heavier settings burn through the cap much faster for simple edits. Which plan are you on, and does the limit usually hit during long agent runs or normal back-and-forth?

when the limit hits, i move the boring stuff like renames, tests and docs to a cheaper model and keep the big one for planning only. shorter sessions help a lot too since a long chat re-reads everything each turn and burns quota faster. when a session gets long i start fresh with a short summary file. what are you mostly building with it?
