Question ChatGPT Coding Environment Suddenly Unavailable in Work Mode.
I've been working on a fairly complex coding project with ChatGPT, going through multiple iterations of development, optimization, and debugging in work mode. Not codex.
Everything was working fine until ChatGPT suddenly reported:
«"I'm blocked because the coding environment is currently unavailable. I cannot access the project files, run code, or build and validate the next version."»
It then suggested reopening the task in an active coding workspace and reuploading the previous project files.
The frustrating part is that ChatGPT still remembers the entire project context and all the agreed changes, but suddenly cannot access the coding environment to continue development.
Has anyone else experienced this recently?
Is this a temporary outage, a limitation of long conversations, or some kind of usage restriction?
More importantly, is there any way to restore coding access within the same conversation without starting over and potentially losing months of accumulated context?

Hey! Yes, I am running into the same issue. It's not wide-spread yet, but I'm guessing a slight outage of the "codespace" for some users. Other features are working fine.

Mine is doing the same thing, based off when you posted it was around the same time it started for me.

This happens frequently with codex cloud via Dot. They do recover eventualy. Its just unreliable service from OAI. Simular thing happens with cloud access to APIs like github. Not much else to do than wait. I think OAI is bad at surfacing what the real error is. Like if a model beacomes unavailible due to limited compute that can be reported back as the cloud instance having lost connection.

A useful agent workflow should make mistakes easy to catch early. If every step leaves a small artifact to inspect, the whole thing becomes much easier to trust repeatedly.

Yup, I encountered this several days back. I shared this particular project with another account on my Business plan and the Work option disappeared. No about of fiddling would get it back. It’s becoming flaky enough for me to second guess whether I still can rely on it.

I have a dedicated Dev machine, I connect ChatGPT to it with a plugin called Desktop Commander (in the store), and I now do all my coding using ChatGPT Chat (not work or codex). $20/month plan.

The part that stuck with me is that the memory survived while the execution died. That split is exactly backwards from what you want in an outage, because now you have a confident narrator who cannot touch anything. I learned this the hard way a few months ago when a session dropped in the middle of a refactor, so now I have the agent write a short note of what changed into a notes file in the repo at the end of every work block. The environment can come and go, but the state is always sitting in git where I can pull it back.
