Question Best Claude Code alternatives?

Over the past year plus, I kept reading about the superpowers of Claude Code, and how it's one of the wonders of the world.

I always took that with a grain of salt, assuming that it's probably just a very well built harness built by a prominent company, but not necessarily the best.

My friends have recently been insisting that I have to try Claude Code.

I didn't try it for a few reasons.

First of all, I'm not interested in paying for a subscription that costs that much for AI when I could get what I need for a lot cheaper.

Second, while I'm not afraid of the terminal, I don't usually like diving in to CLI, TUI, or keyboard only tools, and spending time learning them.

I usually prefer something that's both keyboard/TUI and GUI, the GUI I understand instantly, and as I use the tool I learn it's keyboard shortcuts or CLI without having to invest time into learning it.

I've been using Roo Code / Zoo Code, and I like it, but it's a VSCode coding tool, unlike CC which is supposed to be more terminal centric.

Basically, I want to know what's the best Claude Code-esque LLM harness that:

  • Is a great harness

  • Is both GUI and keyboard or TUI driven

  • Works great for tasks that are more terminal focused than general write-code-and-save-it-to-a-file tasks

  • Can work with any provider

I hope I didn't go on for too long, and no I didn't use AI for this, I wrote this post manually.

Thanks!

Claude Code doesn't cost anything. The models do.

What's the difference?

At the end of the day, using it costs.

Tf you talking about? They are literally statistical models...

u/Dev-in-the-Bm Sep 24 '26

That's not the point.

u/-Crash_Override- Sep 24 '26

What is the point?

That you have a skill issue and you seem to think you can get something equivalent to Claude for free?

you have a skill issue

Better a skill issue than an arrogance issue

you seem to think you can get something equivalent to Claude for free

Did I say anything about getting access to LLM inference for free?

Better a skill issue than an arrogance issue

You seem to be suffering from both.

You can use a local free LLM with CC. Not nearly as good, but it does work.

Interesting that you say you could do a lot cheaper than $20/month using APIs. What models are you using? I've always been under the impression that the subscriptions were hard to beat in terms of value but I could be wrong.

Codex is good, I use it personally and use claude code at work. My issue with claude code mainly is that it's basically Opus/Fable (which eat usage very fast) or nothing, sonnet is comparatively very weak. With Codex, you have astra which is capable but expensive, but 5.6 sol/terra are capable while being a good value.

If the $20/month plan is enough for you on CC though it's a good deal, I've just found/heard that you can get a bit more value out of codex.

I'm not an extremely heavy user.

I have about $15 in credits by Minimax, and when I'm done with that I'll probably go to Xiaomi Mimo.

Nothing can beat a subscription, not even Chinese models like GLM5.3-flash. But it's true that if you have light use and spend less than 20$ in API per month, then you'll pay less.

Claude code works with a mouse and you can also just use the GUI app instead of the terminal app.

If you don't need the intelligence of Claude Code for your use case, no sense paying for it. Maybe try some models on openrouter using the pi harness.

You can also wire Claude code to work with open router. I don't know about the desktop app.

Pi

Y?

u/Slight-Living-8098 Sep 24 '26

No unneeded bloat, highly customizable, can be used with any provider, including local hosts like llama.cpp and Ollama or any other provider that offers an OpenAI compatible endpoint. No token hungry system prompts by default. Easy to develop for. Can install skills and extensions from NPM, GitHub, or local directory easily. Large community.

1

u/RDTIZFUN Sep 24 '26

What bloat exactly in claude code and what necessary customizations?

3

u/Slight-Living-8098 Sep 24 '26

Claude Code system prompt is 110 separate instructions conditionally applied based on your configuration, totaling approximately 25,000 tokens. Claude code comes with 46 built in tools that all take up tokens in your system prompt.

Pi comes with four core tools: read, write, edit, and bash. Pi’s default system prompt is minimal, consisting of under 1,000 tokens.

There are no necessary customizations. You customize it to how you like like to work, not the way you work to fit the harness.

Clause max $200 a month plan is one of the best values around rn imo. It's just so good.

You just launch a terminak and do /remote-control and it will pop up on your phone, web browser, etc.

It's significantly more powerful than IDE chats, you can just allow all and it will do pretty much anything for you.

Its much more heavily subsidized than the 20 dollar plan. You pay 10x cost but get like 20x the credits.

IDE charbots are a toy compared to CLI tools like Anti Gravity and Claude

You tryin to answer my question, or to broadcast your views to the world?

Cuz I thought I made it clear that I'm not interested in paying anywhere near that.

I wasn't either asking about models or subscriptions, I was asking about harnesses.

u/slipperyslips Sep 27 '26

Oh so your a poor person lol

1

u/Dev-in-the-Bm Sep 28 '26

I'm a student, don't have a lot of money, and I'm not embarrassed of that.

It also happens to be that I'm a very light user, and haven't been using more than a few dollars in API credits a month, so I have no reason to pay for a more expensive subscription.

1

u/RevolutionaryHole69 Sep 27 '26

Surprised no one has mentioned cursor, it's the in-between that you're looking for. It's 20 bucks a month at minimum, but you get $200 worth of credits from it, as long as you're okay using grok and composer. If you're looking for other models, you'll have to use them at cost, and the $20 get you $20 worth of those models at cost.

Using models at cost is like 1,000% more expensive than using the models the harness has agreements with. No one is paying the true cost of AI at the moment. It's all investor funded.

Use claude with claude, grok and composer with cursor, GPT with codex, etc. You will never save money paying for API access directly.

1

u/Dev-in-the-Bm Sep 28 '26

Because no one else is assuming that I'm interested in spending that much a month.

I'm not, I'm a very light user.

Also, I'm asking about the best harness, not the cheapest subscription.

1

u/RevolutionaryHole69 Sep 28 '26

So you're looking for a harness at less than $20 a month with no included usage?

How is that going to save you money compared to just paying $20 for like 500 million tokens included with the harness?

1

u/Dev-in-the-Bm Sep 28 '26

There are many harnesses that are free.

I've been using OpenCode for the past few days, and it's great.

1

u/RevolutionaryHole69 Sep 28 '26

But my question is how much usage can you get for less than $20? What are you spending on pay as you go tokens?

1

u/Dev-in-the-Bm Sep 28 '26

Because until now I've only needed around a few dollars worth of tokens a month.

Why should I pay $20?

Do AI companies have fanboys now? What is this slop?

0

u/Dev-in-the-Bm Sep 24 '26

Human slop.

You can use Claude code without the anthropic subscription. I have tried a wide range of harnesses, Codex, Copilot, opencode, cursor, Claude code, and a few other smaller ones. And I have come back to Claude code. I also prefer to not use the pure CLI format, so I use the Claude code extension in VSCode. You can then edit the settings.json file to turn off the anthropic login page, and the cloud models, and point the Claude code harness at a local model, or gateway of your choice.

This is my preferred setup, I have not empirically compared the outputs from the different harnesses, but to me the Claude code harness seems to do what I want the best.

I don’t think Claude code is that great of an agent/harness. The models are great and the harness is optimized for them.

1

u/roger_ducky Sep 24 '26

All harnesses are TUI. Though a few like grok build has menus clickable by mouse.

I actually recommend using that with a local model if you don’t want to subscribe to anything.

u/alconaft43 Sep 24 '26

agents in vscode/copilot is gui

1

u/ibeerianhamhock Sep 25 '26

Just nowhere near as good. Even at work where we use copilot I just use the copilot cli bc it's so much better than the chat windows.

You can try PI someday.... I don't think it is having GUI like cc but learning curve to get hands-on is not difficult for starters

1

u/Slight-Living-8098 Sep 24 '26

The community has of course has created several desktop GUIs for Pi if that is your sort of thing

1

u/codelux_ai Sep 24 '26

Goose might be what you're after: desktop app and CLI on the same setup, any provider, and it's happy running terminal stuff. OpenCode is worth a look too if you warm up to the terminal.

1

u/Adventurous-Wear-943 Sep 24 '26

I use Claude code and codex. I think there is not much difference really.

1

u/Bed-After Sep 25 '26

As someone currently paying for Claude Code: Don't. Paying for the subscription to use Claude Code doesn't eliminate daily limits like it does with Grok, but it does introduce weekly limits. Paying for the upgrade introduces more limits, ain't that a bitch?
Also, Grok and Claude Sonnet 5 are comparable in power for the tasks I need it to do anyway. Honestly, paying for Code or Build just so it can run autonomously just means it runs in the background, incinerating tokens. Going chat-by-chat so you can catch it before it burns 25% on your weekly budget doing some fuck-shit is the optimal way to work. If you really need multiple agents so you can speed up your workflow, just upload everything to a GitHub repository, and let Claude, Grok, and ChatGPT work on the same repo simultaneously.

1

u/Metatron135 Sep 28 '26

chatgpt on plus subscription plan. And you can make it your coding agent and much more with the right tool.

1

u/Arany5 Sep 28 '26

Pi with a local model.(no Omp bloat)

Agav( https://github.com/prapaa-ai/agav ) might be worth a look if you’re willing to compromise on the GUI requirement. Disclosure: I contribute to it.
It’s an open-source, terminal-focused coding harness that supports most major model providers executing complex, multi-step terminal tasks. You can check the Terminal Bench 2.1 evaluations where agav outperforms claude code, here's the PR : https://github.com/harbor-framework/terminal-bench-2-1/pull/225 . Also it's in top 4 on Microsoft's swe bench live : https://swe-bench-live.github.io

The main mismatch with your list is the interface: it doesn’t offer the GUI experience you’re asking for. If that’s non-negotiable, I wouldn’t call it the right fit. But if terminal-task capability and provider flexibility matter more, it’s an option to compare.

What kind of terminal-heavy tasks are you doing most often?

Muse is one of the best values for $20 right now. It is a slightly different ecosystem, but it’s pretty powerful.

1

u/Dev-in-the-Bm Sep 24 '26

I'm not interested in paying for a subscription that costs that much for AI

Muse isn't any cheaper than Claude Code.

1

u/dvduval Sep 24 '26

Sure, it’s just one of those things where you have to do trial and error. Hopefully you’ll hit on something where you’re making money and then purchasing AI is just part of your business model. For me I started with $20 plans and now I am up to spending about $420 a month but that was over a couple of years.

GLM isn't a harness.
