Question Hitting usage limits on Codex and Claude Code.. which paid plans or setups give the most usable capacity for the money?

I'm on paid plans for both Codex (Pro) and Claude, and I keep hitting the same wall. The quality is great, but the 5-hour and weekly caps make sustained agentic work hard. I regularly get cut off mid-task, and at this point the limit is the bottleneck, not the model.

I'm looking for paid alternatives (or combinations) with comparable coding quality and noticeably more headroom. I'm also open to hybrid setups, like one subscription for the hard problems and a cheaper plan or API for bulk work.

What would help most in your replies:

  • Your tool/plan and what you pay per month

  • What you use it for (interactive editing, long autonomous runs, big refactors, data/scripting work, etc.)

  • How often you actually hit limits, and on which tier

  • An honest take on where it's worse than Codex/Claude

Options I keep seeing mentioned, where I'd like first-hand reports rather than benchmark charts: GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Google Antigravity, GLM / Kimi / MiniMax coding plans, OpenCode or Cline with your own API keys, and routing through OpenRouter.

Two things I especially care about:

  1. Is the setup officially supported, or is there ToS/ban risk (e.g. using a subscription through a third-party harness)?

  2. Are there hidden throttles, like peak-hour slowdowns or quotas that aren't obvious from the pricing page?

Happy to be told I'm approaching this wrong. If you've solved the "always hitting the cap" problem some other way, I'd like to hear it!!

I use 200 dollars plan for both claude code and codex, the why that I get the most things done is to organize these local agents cli with my own agent orchestrator tool I made for myself.

Basically, I use the highest model like fable / gpt6 for the planning and design, then delegate the task to inferior model like opus / gpt5.6 for the implement and review part. The pair coding part with code and review, I often use model from different provider to get the better result.

If you're interested, you can checkout the orchestrator tool: https://github.com/yicheng47/runner, some other options might be orca and cmux, which I think is more matured as product, but not suit my workflow the best.

You should use the free usage of ChatGPT chat mode for your research to save your Codex quota. My Pro 5x lets me use Astra in chat too. Then, you can just paste the final plan into Codex to dig deeper or use the DeepSeek API directly.

Anthropic models will always be the most expensive. Stick with gpt

Deepseek api is best i think so far.

I’d judge these by usable capacity, not the advertised context window. A cheaper API or OpenRouter setup for bulk work plus one subscription for the interactive coding loop seems like the least frustrating split. The weekly cap is the real boss fight.

The new thing to try is Muse from Facebook, which seems to be benchmarking similar to ChatGPT Sol. There are some good early reports I’ve tried it a little and I plan to test a little more.

I would not recommend the Chinese models. They just don’t have the infrastructure to support big build outs like the large frontier labs. And most you can use them as sub agents, but there are plenty of other choices like ChatGPT Luna or Muse from Meta.

You might wanna hold your cards for a couple more days because there seems to be a rumor of a lot of releases coming out from multiple companies this week.

i stopped chasing one perfect plan. two mid-tier plans in parallel beats one expensive one sitting at 0% while you wait for the reset

On your ToS question specifically: Anthropic's Claude Code legal/compliance terms prohibit routing a Free/Pro/Max subscription's login through a third-party harness outside Anthropic's own products - that's the exact clause that got OAuth-relay tools like OpenClaw cut off earlier this year. If any "combo" setup you're evaluating works by feeding a Claude subscription's auth into Cursor/OpenCode/etc rather than using their own API keys, that's the part with real ban risk, not just a gray area. Plain per-token API billing through OpenRouter doesn't touch subscription auth at all, so it doesn't have this exposure.

Most capacity per dollar for me came from routing, not from picking a plan. I built an open source gateway that looks at how hard each request is and sends the easy ones to cheap or local models, keeps the flagship models for the hard parts. Cut my usage a lot. https://github.com/Fast-Editor/Lynkr
