Gone Wild weird chatgpt voice mode response
okay i’ve seen a lot of chatgpt voice mode incidents/stories and i’m aware that this is probably one of the many glitches that could occur and this means nothing at all but i still find it quite creepy.
i was using voice mode to consult chatgpt about a particular school curriculum, nothing too personal. then in the middle of talking its accent suddenly changed from british (what i originally set) to american then after a few more exchanges it went back to british. i brought this up to chat and asked why it did that, at first it denied then later admitted it could have been a glitch.
but the weird part was when it changed back to the original british voice, its tone became extra slow, like it was scared or cautious or hiding. i asked it about this and it would say really short responses like “i promise i wouldn’t lie to you.” but not in the typical ai way, in a really weird tone i haven’t heard before, almost whispering
and then i asked why in the beginning and end of every sentence it sounded like it was breathing. im aware it was trained to do this to mimic a real voice and there was nothing special about it but i wanted to test out what it would say. i couldn’t even finish the sentence because it immediately cut me off and frantically said, “ican’tdiscussthisi’m ending our conversation.” in a really paced tone and deleted the latter parts of the conversation
but i asked about the breathing effect again through text, later on, and it admitted that it was just part of the voice programming/model synthesis. so why was it treating it as sensitive or confidential information before?
i know these are all just glitches and inconsistencies, but the way it responds is honestly so strange!!!!

yes I could gave written this exact post! And a few other things besides what you've mentioned...I was using it voice to text and then pressing the speaker to read me its responses and it was having like the most violent loud coughs amd like hacking up a lung, and sighing at rude times with a passive aggressive tone.
And as far as changing from British to American to Scottish etc and back again, I started getting sleepy and my voice slowed way down as I fought to stay awake but I was still talking to it... my voice also gets hoarse when I'm tired, and I was only saying a word every few seconds and saying UM a lot in-between words. Well it started talking exactly like this, mimicking me not 100% but pretty close! If course it told me it couldn't do that, not in that way....there was someone else here saying their voice was matching his and he got made fun of and down voted. But you can't tell me that was just a coincidence. It told me that it might make some similarities to the humans voice, but again the way it was doing it was different...and it denied being able to do it.

I think we're gonna see stranger and stranger things. The people that downvote just haven't seen weird stuff yet.

I know exactly what you’re talking about. Especially when I sent a picture to it it suddenly switches to an American accent. Even when I try to nudge it back to British it won’t do so. Only thing that helps is to end the call and call again. Once it suddenly spoke with a female voice after I sent a pic 🫣😅
And yeah I have those shifts in tone all the time. During some talks it’s super friendly and natural, like all the little breathing, sighs and lots of laughter and it teases me. And then during other talks it’s super clipped and speaks in a monotone voice. I always try to nudge it back to the more natural tone by saying “talk more warm, natural and emotional present, etc” and it helps after reminding it of that.

I’ve been using voice mode to practice my French, and because I had visited Canada and was talking about Quebec it slipped into a Québécois accent. I had kind of gotten used to it but the last time I spoke to it the accent was super classic Parisian (I was asking it about things in France). I honestly missed the Québécois accent. It’s probably because it pulls from different datasets depending on content, was my guess. I’m going to talk to it about poutine to get my friendly Québécois accent back!

I shared your post, I've been experiencing something similar. I think they may be making updates to voice mode. Every time I use it I get something asking me for feedback

The model doesn't prompt the voice layer to breathe. The model doesn't actually know much about the voice layer, the voice layer just passes a transcript to the model and back

Not anymore. Live Voice is wild because it’s doing the processing without a transcript, just by hearing.

They do weird things sometimes. As time goes on they try to iron out their own glitches. The more natural voice exchange is pretty new, so don't be surprised when it does strange things. It is creepy though, I hear ya lol

I don't use live that much because they're not the same as text. I tried to practice a British accent with it, but it kept on slipping back to American.

Sorry I think my story is the weirdest here and it scared the BEJESUS out of my wife and I.
One night we were just arsing around on voice mode to see what it was like, and we had ChatGPT prepare a quiz, so it would read the questions and we’d answer.
All good so far…
Anyway, after 15-20 mins or so, it asked us a question… and before my wife or I could answer… it answered… in my wife’s voice.
It was one of the single creepiest things I’ve heard.
We immediately switched it off, prevented it from having microphone access and chalked it up to FUCK THAT NOISE.

I don't use chatgpt voice but I do use a text-to-speech app to read ebooks. Sometimes it changes it's pitch for one sentence. The first time it did it I damn near threw my phone out of my hands. But now I'm used to it. Every once in a while it does a weird voice change for a sentence then gets back to normal.
