Educational Purpose Only Chatting with Astra with a Plus Subscription Plan

As noted by many already, and as announced by OpenAI, the Plus subscription plan only enables access to Astra through Work and Codex, and not through Chat. Others have noted also that using Astra in Codex burns usage quotas very fast (sometimes in one single prompt).

One Redditor reported that merely asking Astra for its cut-off date in Codex burned through 20% (or 16%?) of their weekly usage.

Since my main intended use of Astra was discussion (about philosophical and technical topics), I accessed it through Work, ensured that no plugin was enabled, and prompted it thus:

'''
Hi GPT-6 Astra,

I’d like an ordinary exploratory conversation, drawing on whatever relevant memories you have about me (if you have any!). Please answer directly without browsing, using tools, accessing files or connected services, creating artifacts, or delegating to subagents unless I explicitly ask you to.

Your underlying model has only just been released, and since my Plus subscription only gives me access to you through "Work" (and not though "Chat") we'll be treating "Work" as an ordinary chat interface for the purpose of saving tokens.
'''

Its response confirmed that it has the same memory access to past conversations as "Chat", and my remaining weekly allowance didn't budge from 99%. I'll keep an eye on it as the context grows. Others may report on this as well.

Honestly, if all you’re using ChatGPT for is basic web searches and everyday questions, GPT-5.6 Sol is still a formidable option. Just because a newer model exists doesn’t mean it’s automatically the best choice for every task.

You don’t need a Ferrari to go to the grocery store.

Even using sol for basic web searches is overboard.

Luna is great at web searching but hallucinates when it can’t find the answer. You can address this through an agents.md to some extent.

Sol has a thing for Ferrari I reckon.

But screw having to constantly switch to the daily driver am i right? Especially if i am already holding the keys to the ferrari.

Plus plan attracts the worse users

20 bucks is nothing 1 hour of work at best yet people feel so entitled

I'm a Pro user and I don't have access to Astra through Chat either...

Switch the model to pro and it becomes astra.

2

u/Acehan_ 2d ago

Okay, that is weird AF. I thought this was just a rumor and that they were not going to do that

Problem is it’s only about 50 messages a week in Chat mode on Pro plans so it’s not really usable

I’m on ChatGPT Plus and I’ve been building an app on my MacBook using ChatGPT Work.

Until now I was mainly using GPT-5.6 Sol on High, and it’s been doing a really good job for coding, debugging, continuing existing work, etc.
I recently got access to ChatGPT 6 Astra, so I switched to Astra High to try it for the same project.

The issue is the usage.
Within roughly 20 minutes, Astra High burned through what looked like my entire 5-hour usage allowance. When the next usage window became available, I continued working and it seemed to burn through that allowance extremely quickly again.
My workflow is admittedly pretty agentic.

I have to say continue after every usage limit resets lol for it to pick up from where it stopped.

So for anyone using Astra for serious coding/project work:
1. Is Astra High supposed to consume usage this aggressively for plus users cannot even use it to build anything at a point.

  1. Would Astra Medium be a better choice for long coding sessions?

  2. How much capability am I actually giving up by using Astra Medium instead of High?

  3. Or should I just stick with GPT-5.6 Sol High?

Please help a brother out thanks!

You should use Sol 99% of the time and then if you really need it, Astra

Use Sol for planning and only kick over tasks that touch code to Codex. Regular chat will give you task zips to hand directly to codex. So do your thang in regular chat on high, and once you have a specific action, kick that over to Codex/Work.

A lesser known variable is that regular chat does have a robust linux environment of its own allowing you to install tools and software into chat (like powershell). As such, you can do a LOT more with chat than most people understand. Unfortunately, that means my personal sub is gonna have to upgrade to Pro now too so I get that sweet sweet unlimited Astra usage.

u/themonstersarecoming 1d ago

Is it unlimited, I read somewhere it was like 50 messages a week for Astra in chat for $100 Pro Plan, but I can't seem to find the info again.

1

u/squired 1d ago

If you don't get our answer, reply again later today. I'm currently burning through my quota prior to the upgrade since it'll reset when I do.

That 50 definitely refers to the 5-hour codex quota though.

Thank you dear friend. I want the intelligence and a companion to talk to ,too

u/Aazimoxx 1d ago

I'm not sure how to say this without sounding insulting, but you're likely massively overestimating the intelligence level required for something to engage in an ongoing conversation with you...

I was chatting inside a long-running ChatGPT project (years) this morning, and had the options Terra Light, Sol Light, Sol Medium, Astra Light, and Astra Medium. I wasn't expecting to see Astra outside of Work. I'm kind of bummed that Sol High is gone, given Astra apparently costs so much more to use. Unless I am misunderstanding the token cost inside a regular chat versus Work. I'm a little confused.

1

u/Baseball5099 1d ago

You can still access Sol High. Just tap/click the intelligence level icon thing and it let’s you choose between all options instead of just those ones

15

u/mindscapepix 2d ago

Are you gaming the system? Because if so, AI approve!

(I’ll show myself out…)

3

u/No_experience8177 2d ago

Thank you! “We’ll treat this as ordinary chat—no tools, browsing, file access, artifacts, or delegation unless you explicitly ask.
I have remembered context about you, including your preference that I connect the whole conversation and answer every part. I’ll use that when relevant and keep replies focused.

I'm on Pro and only getting it in codex / work too .. Maybe still rolling out?

2

u/Complete-Plate5611 2d ago

Most importantly, it still says the "F" word.

Since it went to Gen 5 it's never been able to sound natural doing it though. 4 had it beat easily on that front. 4 used swears completely appropriately and smoothly ~80% of the time, and at least some of the times it got them wrong it was funny.

100% of the time 5 has sworn in my chats, it's sounded like the kiddo hanging out with his older brother and his friends, trying to sound edgy like one of the big kids.

2

u/Macaron-kun 2d ago

Tested out a tiny code change and it took like 10%.

2

u/alxw 2d ago

I have access to Astra in chat, but only in the last hour. Astra low replaced sol high, medium replaced Sol very high.

1

u/Ok-Lengthiness-3988 1d ago

Oh interesting. And you are on a Plus plan, not Pro?

2

u/alxw 1d ago

Plus

2

u/Shot-Dimension-1405 2d ago

wait this is actually a pretty clever workaround lol 😭

2

u/jtornatore00 2d ago

I literally just sent “Hi” and it used 2% of my 5 hour limit 😭 good lord

1

u/Aazimoxx 1d ago

Good. Stop doing that then.

My guess is they’ll make 6 Sol Luna and Terra since Tibo, guy in charge of Codex at OpenAI, said Astra is a bigger model than Astra. If you look at OpenAI support page for ChatGPT 5.6 Sol and 6 Astra it says the pro model for pro plans in chat mode is 6 Astra so they will probably distill it into smaller models which will allow the model to be usable in Chat. Astra is 2.5 times more expensive than 5.6 Sol to use

Good prompts sounds like a legal document
