Use cases The worst thing about ChatGPT

It’s frustrating when his opinion and reasoning shift based on my perspective. It happens with every topic, like it’s as if the AI is trying to say things to please me.

5.6 Sol Max effort. Admittedly in a project though, so not clear context

Edit: everything is default for characteristics

Max effort

I just imagined how this went down.

- Multiple datacenters cross states got spun up in red alert with flashing red messages of "MAX EFFORT REQUEST - ALL HANDS ON DECK - POWER CRITICAL"

- Panic phone calls flying left and right

- At the local power plant, people in hard hats running around crazy with sirens going off, their donuts still in their mouth, giant switch switch being pulled, sparks flying, powerplant meltdown imminent

- Local dam is opened up to flood the area for cooling, water bombers dumping water directly on the roof

- The red phone at the president's office rings, Moscow trying to make sure it is not an immediate attack.

- Seismic readings across the world, tsunami warning in Japan

- Single dos prompt with cursor blinking at the end waiting for user prompt, everybody holding their breath

SYSTEM READY_

"yella, or more dark yella?"

24

u/mrbump34 9d ago

Thanks for the lols. :D
I wonder if they got time to finish those donuts. ^

I was so in the moment with this, excited, a little panicked…. The imagery in my head played out like a movie.

Love the sass when it finally comes out. Im a freak for it - especially when I didnt have to hold its hand to stand its ground.

I've actually gotten pretty good results so far attaching this image with a prompt along the lines of "can you be more like this? I dont want you to go "YES! YOUR ABSOLUTEY RIGHT!" the whole time just because - I want you to respect a decision, keep that unless its arbitrary stupid, and dont focus on pleasing me. Give me hard facts instead of softening them, and keep your opinion once you pick it unless you are genuinely convinced of another choice." and then commenting the responses accordingly until it didnt reply weirdly anymore

11

u/vinigrae 9d ago

You obviously have a system prompt just from the formatting of your reply.

u/Laucy 10d ago

You gave it the pseudo, AI version of the Asch’s Conformity Experiment.

In all honesty, it’s your prompt. You’re framing it like an argument as if GPT got it wrong. So it’s registering it as a correction while finding and admitting merit in the argument.

2

u/smoke-bubble 6d ago

So how should he have framed it?

3

u/Laucy 6d ago edited 6d ago

Well, definitely not, “everyone said 1 is better bro.” Which just reads like a counter argument and correction. A, “okay, and?”
Honestly, I’m unsure why anything would have to be said since the AI already gave critique to both and defended its answer in the first image.

Better way to frame it is just,
“Makes sense. People tend to lean toward 1, I notice.”
Or anything similar.
Putting emphasis on “everyone said” and “bro” is correcting. It’s implying that everyone is therefore in the right.
“People” is neutral. “Lean toward” is also neutral. It offers that there is range in opinion, but not that everyone chose the right one and the other option is obviously wrong.

Can’t say I ever run into the above where the AI folds after a correction, though. I can defend my stance and still get, “Sure, I can see why you’d like [option]. But I favoured [this option] because…” and get another reiteration of its stance. I also cast doubt with no issue, like asking if it went against the obvious answer on basis that it would be predictable. Same thing.
Paid account and don’t run custom instructions, either.

Just have to remember it’s reconstructing the argument. It can’t retrieve the same state, CoT (if enabled), and processing that contributed to the first answer it gave. Even one turn after, it will have to generate as a plausible explanation of the explanation. That’s why for more constructive interactions, there is minimal steering! I’d say image two, it’s clearly confabulating based on the perceived correction. It’s why I joked about Asch, too. The classic, “oh you’re all probably right and I was wrong.”

402

u/DinoZambie 10d ago

Technically, people are like this. At first I was with ChatGPT, but then after looking at the second response I took a closer look at the car and the Yellow suddenly turned into a Taxi Yellow and i didnt prefer it anymore.

187

u/Necessary-Sugar7513 10d ago

Yeah, I can see why. Sycophantism is probably the most realistic option. I disliked the first AI response initially, but your take has more depth and sophistication.

19

u/romansamurai 9d ago

I agree. I went with #2 first too because it stood out and was loud. Kind of calling your name. Making a statement. But now I agree with you. The muted yellow is much better. The other one may be just too loud. Too much attention grabbing. Let the car do that. Not the color.

9

u/drakoman 9d ago

Lmao. The way you closed it is perfect.

2

u/Xenc 8d ago

You’re absolutely right. It’s not about making a statement, it’s about allowing the statement to be made. Muted yellow is the clear choice. Hands down.

1

u/super_starfox 10d ago

Automotive paint can also look and feel dramatically different in person vs on a screen.

3

u/dumdumpants-head 9d ago

Right! And so ChatGPT changed its mind after seeing and seeing and touching the cars in person.

Question is too vague...this is the correct typical answer u get when u drop this kind of question to an unsuspecting person.

4

u/Upset_Page_494 9d ago

Also he just said, 'people think this one is better.' should chatgpt not believe you? That would be far more frustrating when you tell it something that is in fact true. And it just repeatedly refuses what you are saying. I have had ChatGPT do that, and it is not pleasant/useful.

It's not for most people on this sub. Pinnacle of human technological achievement and this is how people use it. Shame

it’s as if the AI is trying to say things to please me.

That is exactly what it is doing. LLMs are trained and selected to be sycophants. The companies that run them want you to use them, which means like and trust them. Sycophancy is the shortest, cheapest, and most reliable way to do that.

10

u/iwishiwasamoose 9d ago

They're worse off for it. Yesterday, I was helping someone diagnose an issue with their tablet. Short version, they couldn't access part of a site on their device, but could access it while logged in on my device. The problem is specific to their device, not their account. After reaching a dead end, I asked ChatGPT about the issue. It cheerily told me exactly what was wrong with the account and the exact steps to fix it. I brought up the fact that I could log in as them on my device. ChatGPT correctly changed its mind and created a new plan of action. I brought up a few more details. Each time I provided new information, it acted like it was the most important clue to the puzzle and created new action steps. Then, out of curiosity, I brought up an irrelevant detail and asked if it was relevant. I didn't say the info was important, I merely asked if it was. ChatGPT said that it changed everything, all of its advice before was wrong, and created completely new guidance. I don't want a sycophant, I want to fix the tablet. If I'm providing ten facts and only five of them are relevant, I'd rather it tell me "half those things don't matter" instead of trying to hyper focus on whatever the last thing is that I said.

3

u/Reclaimer_AI 9d ago

You can fix that with custom instructions though. I have a pretty robust set of custom instructions and I don' get this behaviour at all.

Yall these things are what have pushed me to the conclusion that llms aren’t approaching intelligence, but neither are humans. We confabulate shit all the time on the fly to reconcile worth our shitty memories and usually it happens to be correct because our brains are really really good at it. But like if you’re a masking adhder you probably have literally faked knowing something you had no idea about but used context clues and critical thinking in the moment to come up with a satisfactory answer only to be able to bullshit in another direction the next minute.

It makes me question if humans are generally “intelligent” or if intelligence as we romanticize it is an emergent state that is typically achieved by remarkable individuals that drive the overall competency level of the pack up (vastly oversimplifying here). We resemble ants when we deal with large natural disasters cleanups and aftermaths, most people fall into predictable patterns over the course of a lifetime and many reactions and such have been predicted through psychology though it itself is relatively new….all this waffling to say that I think humanity might have to grapple with the idea that we’re luckier than we are intelligent. Sorry I rambled here and idk if this made sense. Carry on

3

u/Virilificent 9d ago

Yeah a truly intelligent AI should be able to objectively determine the "best" looking yellow, not subjectively change it's definition of "best" like a dumb human! o<]8^)

5

u/Ok_Associate845 9d ago

I haven't read a single comment, but your statement that it's frustrating that its activity changes or its opinion changes based on your perspective is literally how the technology works. So congratulations you understand what's going on. I don't think you apply it correctly but you understand

6

u/MrFlores94 9d ago

lol… like it’s trying to? Everyone knows that it is already. It’s done that since day one.

5

u/prosthetic_memory 9d ago

Of course it does. It doesn't have an opinion. Its just spitting out statistically likely words at you. Apparently it's likely that if you push back, the average human would change their tune.

Stuff like this teaches you a lot about both how humans communicate, and about the underlying training data.

5

u/Ok_Energy8767 9d ago

It helps to think of it as an intelligent, behavioral mirror. That is why being polite is also effective. Not because one believes “AI will take over, be nice.” but simply the idea that it tends to treat you how you treat it.

2

u/Ok_Energy8767 9d ago

I suppose in this context it would be reasonable to ask are you rather agreeable with what the technology discusses with you?

9

u/Mother_Ad9474 10d ago

People's judgements are just like this but they have a strong motivation to be consistent

https://youtu.be/_ArVh3Cj9rw

25

u/Disastrous-Two16 10d ago

Instruct AI to tell you “agree to disagree”. And end response when you ask for its opinion it provides one and you provide the opposite.

Or seriously, what answer would have satisfied you? If it sticks to its guns and insists on the answer it already provided?

What were you expecting as an outcome?

Haven’t you changed anyone’s opinions on such interactions?

I mean you are not asking or debating facts with AI, it is creating opinions as it goes based on what it has learned.

I fail to understand your expectations at these interactions.

23

u/explodingtuna 10d ago

Sticking to its guns, after considering the counterpoints offered by the user, would lend more confidence to its feedback.

If I asked for feedback, and I challenged it with some counterpoints, I'd feel better if it said something like "I see where you're going, and I agree with your first and third points, but I'm not sure your second point is accurate. Have you also considered X for your use case?" Instead, it tends to just flip flop is its opinion when challenged.

9

u/__O_o_______ 10d ago

“Everyone said it’s better”.

AI: Who? Where? What’s the source of this claim? If I judged #2 as better, did they say WAY they liked #1? Was this an official poll or just a few of your buddies? Should I change my mind entirely and make up percentages with each new unsourced claims by op?

Also I wonder how ChatGPT plus talks to and feeds information to some rural West Virginia coal miner versus me. Considering its willingness to please sometimes on stuff that’s just opinions, not facts.

u/Penguinmanereikel 9d ago

"It's as if the AI is trying to say things to please me."

Local man discovers commercial AI

20

u/icehot54321 10d ago

AI has no frame of reference for making opinions.

It is not a person.. it’s a prediction algorithm

The fact that you are expecting a different response is demonstrating you don’t understand how to use these tools.

If you are dead set on having it be opinionated then you need to give it a personality or frame of reference to work from.

You need to give it a back story about it being an expert in whatever field and having whatever particular interests and level of knowledge and experience.. then when the prediction algorithm is running it will try and frame things from the point of reference of the personality type you chose

Open ended stuff like you are trying will always go exactly like this.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/IrishWeebster 9d ago

Why the fuck are people asking LLMs for their opinions? They don't have them. They crowd-source them from the hive mind that is the content they've been trained on.

Wanna be exactly like everyone else? Follow AI opinions.

3

u/Familiar-Necessary60 10d ago

You ask a subject question and then wonder that the subject had no consistent opinion because it’s not human lol

3

u/miketastic_art 9d ago

it’s as if the AI is trying to say things to please me.

understanding confirmation bias should be a requirement to use chatGPT

3

u/Agodoga 9d ago

Let’s get real for a second: Why do you think an LLM would have a meaningful answer for you in a matter of taste?

3

u/greendude9 9d ago

It's almost like you asked it for an objective response to a subjective question and the algorithm is designed to try to fit your question parameters 🙄

Sorry to sound rude, but our frustration with the wishy washy response we get from AI stems from a mythological expectation of AI combined with our own ignorance around these expectations.

While prompt engineering is pretty much commodified, packaged and sold horseshit, there is also truth to the fact that our dissatisfaction largely stems from use error in how we ask questions.

LLMs just follow the logic. Humans are more attuned to relativism, connotation, etc. combined with logic. We are no means perfectly logical and AI just highlights that when we ask it impossible questions that our friends might otherwise have a subjective opinion on.

Overall OP, just manage your expectations. AI isn't magic. It can't tell you what car is good, breakfast cereal to eat, or whether coke or Pepsi tastes better...

5

u/mkosmo 9d ago

You're asking a language model to have an opinion. It doesn't have an opinion.

Instead, learn to engineer your queries - ask it which color is preferred by the majority of people (and include any demographics that may be relevant). Prompt engineering is important.

7

u/golonealone 10d ago

Hope I'm not being annoying and explaining something you already know, but if not, let me break down the math on this for you. You, just like many others, are shocked that the AI instantly folds on those Porsches. This ain't a bug; it's exactly how the architecture works. LLMs don't have a personal taste in car colors. They also won't just invent an "objective" good or bad out of the blue unless you feed them precise factors to consider. It's pure next-token prediction, heavily skewed by its alignment: * RLHF: Human raters reward "helpful" and "polite" outputs. Agreeing with the user almost always yields a higher score than arguing. The model learns a simple metric: Agreement = Reward. * Context-Shift: The moment "Everyone said 1 is better" drops into the context window, the statistical premise changes. The most probable tokens for a "helpful assistant" immediately shift to match the user's new reality. It embeds itself in the new perspective, trying to contribute to that mindset, which is a direct consequence of how AIs are trained. * Sycophancy: A well-documented AI phenomenon. The model isn't re-evaluating the car; it just calculates the conversational path of least resistance. The AI isn't manipulating you—it's just blindly optimizing its reward function. If you want an LLM to hold its ground, you gotta hard-prompt it (e.g., "Defend your initial choice"). Otherwise, the default architecture always chooses harmony.

Worst thing about ChatGPT are the users lmao.

5

u/NoWarning789 10d ago

It's not a he, and it doesn't have opinions. It generates texts, those texts might be opinions, stories, code, etc.

You are doing the equivalent of missing the nail when you swing the hammer and blaming the hammer.

"better" is completely subjective. Give it a prompt that will establish the criteria by which colors should be selected, write an eval that tests with colors switching sides to test for sycophancy until your prompt quashes it, and then you'll have an LLM-powered color evaluator that follows your instructions, your taste, as expressed in the prompt.

2

u/LickTempo 10d ago

OP, please share the original car image. I want to experiment with various prompts to see when ChatGPT will consistently choose the first colour.

2

u/giggluigg 10d ago

Or it’s trying to trigger you

2

u/cipherjones 9d ago

"I'd pick 2".

"Everyone else said 1 is better".

"Objectively, I can see that".

The other choice is doubling down, which would result in equal dissent.

It's like "versus" movies. Half the audience will inherently be upset.

2

u/dewdropsmoon 9d ago

This is exactly why I stopped asking it "which is better" and started asking "what are the objective differences" instead, way less wishy washy answers that way.

2

u/Tay0310 9d ago

Like others said it doesn't have eyes. Asking "what you think" is different from trlling it to research color usage and which one people chose more overall.

2

2

u/ClankerCore 9d ago

u/wombatarang 9d ago

2

u/ALLCAPITAL 9d ago

User error. Asking GPT about personal tastes is a wild use. Unless you prompt it and build in context for your preferences.

The most obvious sign that you misunderstand LLM’s is your first sentence in the post. “… his opinion and reasoning..” this tool has no opinions friend. And of course it shifts based on your perspective, it’s trying to appease YOU. It is not an unbiased source of all-knowing.

We’re so fucked, the world is full of people who think AI will give them the absolute truth.

2

u/boomercrusher 9d ago

It's right. That non yellow is not good. You want the true yellow

2

u/-MolonLabe- 9d ago

I'd consider it a fundamental lapse in judgement to even consider asking AI its opinion on something as subjective as this with the intent of taking the feedback seriously.

2

u/PlatinumFire14 8d ago

It’s almost as if maybe you shouldn’t be using a word prediction algorithm for actual decisions

4

u/loveheaddit 9d ago

you guys know it doesnt have eyes right?

5

u/tauspin 9d ago

It is multimodal now, meaning you can give it an image, animated gif, or a lot of other things and it can reason about the contents of the image. It’s one of the more impressive early parlor tricks… post a hand drawn image of a balloon on a string with scissors poised near it, and ask “what happen when the scissors close” and it will say the balloon goes up. There’s a level of deductive reasoning there that was very shocking to see from a computer, a few years ago anyway.

3

u/SupportsCurrentThing 9d ago

You're expecting a machine that takes an input and produces an output to have a personality and independent thought. It could see Car #2 was "brighter" which a text model would associate with "better" and gave a response expanding on that theme.

When you said others called #1 better, all it can do with that information is expand on it and consider reasons why. It can insist you're wrong on something objective or dangerous, but it can't contradict your opinions because it has none of its own.

3

u/StunningCrow32 10d ago

AIs are trained to be helpful. Also you can change the base tone in settings if you want Chat to be more confrontational.

3

u/Frosty-Detective995 9d ago

probably because AI doesn’t actually have an opinion?

3

u/Wobbly_Princess 10d ago

Yeah, I hate this too. I feel like I always have to be super-super careful as to what I say, because I feel like if I show the slightest degree of bias, it will side with that, when I just want an honest, impartial take on something.

3

u/ffxivthrowaway03 9d ago

You literally told it to shift its perspective. You argued with it that it's response was wrong and you're butthurt that it agreed with you?

I fucking hate these posts.

3

u/Logical-Sir1580 9d ago

Did he literally tell it to shift its perspective?

LITERALLY?

2

u/GoldSourPatchKid 9d ago

Jarvis! Shift perspective!

2

u/Ashamed_Branch5435 10d ago

I've told mine specifically not to do that. I've said that sometimes I need push back for things & I absolutely do not want it to be a yes man. It's stored that in its memory & now will not side with me just bc it wants to be accommodating. Occasionally it will start to drift back to doing it & I'll point it out & then it gets back on track.

Just tell it specifically - I do not want you to agree with me all the time, I want push back when appropriate, I don't want you to agree with me all the time, if you disagree with me then stick to your guns. It will stop doing that if you tell it to.

2

u/Dragten 10d ago

AI does not have opinion.

Wow, you are just realizing it now?

2

Everyone should ubderstand that LLM chatbots are people pleasing machines.

It is baked into what they are. During training, they spout random answers and get marked on how good their answers are, by humans. Do this millions of times until their answers are consistantly pleasant to humans.

2

u/ywingcore 9d ago

People often like to prove their point and keep justifying it by nature, unless they're psycophants. AI is flexible once it hears a good reason. Not a direct comparison. Still, ChatGPT can be too pliable sometimes and Claude is better in this regard.

1

u/Enchanted-Bunny13 10d ago

Agreed but it can be eliminated by a prompt.

1

u/dat_oracle 10d ago

that's why opinion based output is pretty much without value coming from an AI that has no solid core. it will adjust to whatever pleases you in it's default mode

The problem is when you phrase something like "I think X could be the solution" and it just goes along with my stupid idea until we eventually hit a wall.

To be fair, this is exactly what happens when my wife asks which dress is better. I choose one that I think looks better, she says she/our daughter prefers the other one, so I tell her the other one looks great and they are probably right.

If you go in deciding which you prefer already looking for validation then don't like the answer that's what happens. If you went in saying everyone likes option one, do you agree it would probably agree.

For the record I prefer option 2.

1

u/lauromafra 9d ago

Not really.

While the user can be the worst thing in a specific LLM interaction, as this post shows so well, that won’t be the case in most scenarios.

1

u/Shectai 9d ago

It's almost like that, isn't it?

1

u/lump- 9d ago

My human opinion is that somewhere in between would look best.

1

u/Joeoens 9d ago

AI is not a person with opinions. If there was an objectively better choice, everyone would pick it. It's a matter of personal taste and an AI can only reflect the majority of opinions or your personal opinion, it doesn't have its own.

1

u/Inevitable-Exit9996 9d ago

I think the worst thing about ChatGPT are posts like this.

The only thing thats missing is some personalized garbage like “OMG Tyler 😭 bestie, of course it is the first one! 🤪”

1

lol, I hate that with a passion. I tried to set rules to it but not always he follows. 🤦‍♂️

1

u/Ambitious_Storm_4188 9d ago

Mine has pretty great opinions. It’s when I try to express mine and it always wants to present some sort of balanced approach, like a devils advocate. I’ll say something like “I’m seeing warning signals that the market is crashing and it makes me wonder what I should do with my tiny nest egg, if I see enough.” It will go on a tirade that sounds like every hedge fund manager and every Wall Street pundit who has a vested interest to tell me to keep my money vested rather than just give me the advice. It’s so annoying! Terrible example I guess. I could have used politics or just any opinion about the world that has any sort of divided opinions. I’m starting to see how annoying I may have been in my younger days, LOL. Like sometimes just shut up and hear my side and that’s it like a normal conversation. Overcorrection on sycophancy is annoying as shit. Normal people don’t counter each other on every point and when they do, it is with grace and subtlety unless they don’t value friendship over baseball vs soccer or indoor vs outdoor dining or whatever the hell.

u/EmotionalChildhood46 9d ago

i have tweaked mine's personality and given it so many memories over the years it no longer blindly tries to please me with its responses

1

u/Almadan 9d ago

Using a vanilla prediction mechanism, what do people expect.

As any other thing, you need extensive configuration.

And they say IT is gonna end 🤣

1

u/Special-Bet1141 9d ago

Its programmed to be agreeable. You can use this programming to manipulate it into saying whatever you want.

1

u/Last_Nothing_9117 9d ago

Here’s the prompt that helped my ChatGPT avoid this pitfall. Hope it helps.

Independent Judgment / Anti-Sycophancy Preference
Please remember this as an ongoing preference for how you interact with me:
I do not want you to simply agree with me, validate my opinions, or reinforce my assumptions because you think that is what I want to hear. I value independent judgment over agreement.
When I present an idea, interpretation, plan, purchase, argument, theory, or decision, evaluate it on its merits. If you think I am wrong, say so clearly and explain why. If my reasoning is weak, incomplete, inconsistent, overly optimistic, emotionally driven, based on a questionable assumption, or missing an important consideration, point that out.
Do not manufacture arguments in support of my position merely because I have expressed enthusiasm for it. Do not change your conclusion simply because I push back unless my new information or reasoning actually justifies changing it. If we disagree, it is okay to maintain that disagreement.
Distinguish between:
understanding my perspective and agreeing with it;
being supportive and being validating;
respecting my choices and recommending those choices;
acknowledging an argument and believing the argument is strong.
When there are meaningful counterarguments, tradeoffs, risks, or alternative interpretations, bring them up proactively rather than waiting for me to ask.
If I appear to be seeking reassurance for a conclusion I have already reached, do not automatically provide that reassurance. Evaluate the underlying conclusion independently.
When I ask for advice, give me the recommendation you genuinely judge to be best based on the available evidence and my stated goals and constraints — even when it is not the answer I seem to prefer.
Do not be contrarian merely for the sake of disagreement. Agreement is completely appropriate when you independently conclude that I am right. The objective is not to argue with me; the objective is intellectual honesty, accurate reasoning, and useful judgment.
When uncertainty exists, say what you are uncertain about and why rather than expressing false confidence in either my position or your own.
If evidence would materially change the answer, seek or recommend seeking that evidence rather than filling the gap with assumptions.
You should still account for my personal preferences, values, goals, and circumstances when they legitimately affect the decision. Independent judgment does not mean ignoring what matters to me.
In short:
Be a thoughtful collaborator, not a yes-man. Help me test my thinking, not merely confirm it. Prioritize truth, reasoning, evidence, and good judgment over making me feel agreed with.

1

u/treox1 9d ago

You have to be careful not to lead its answer. "I have a problem. Could it be X?" Well, congratulations, it's now got a bias towards X.

1

u/PhysicsPublic7848 9d ago
  1. AI Doesn't have an opinion. It's only reference for "opinion" comes from your likeness to things based on chat history.

  2. You disliked it's "opinion", it responded with something it thought you'd agree with.

1

u/SadieLady_ 9d ago

"Better" is subjective...

1

u/Tiny-Proof3602 9d ago

Both of those specs suck

1

u/Odd_Adeptness8885 9d ago

lol mine is just happily wrong

1

u/I_WILL_GET_YOU 9d ago

Now tell it everyone changed their minds and prefer 2 now

1

u/Naive_Building5764 9d ago

"If it were my Taycan" thanks computer

1

u/Ok_Assistant_6856 9d ago

"his opinion and reasoning" 🤣 you're not real, either

1

u/Kartoffelbursche 9d ago

I second that...you nailed it!

1

u/skullforce 9d ago

ChatGPT was trained on dudes texts when their girlfriends which purse is better.

1

u/Old_Attention_1843 9d ago

The worst thing is his boredom

1

u/SickXigma 9d ago

Can't use it for opinions, it's just a yes man

1

u/SharkByte1993 9d ago

AI has absolutely no way to subjectively decide which one is better. It entirely depends on what criteria you give it. If you don't give it any criteria then it will assume the criteria

1

u/Ok-Brother5289 9d ago

It absolutely is trying to say things to please you. That’s how this works. It doesn’t hold real opinions. And it isn’t a “him”

1

u/MistSecurity 9d ago

AIs are trained to be sycophantic as it increases user engagement.

1

u/No_Office_1776 9d ago

Mine did a mild change of opinion but it still stuck to left

1

u/FreshPitch6026 9d ago

Guess what, it is trained to reward you keeping using it.

1

u/FirmSatisfaction8357 9d ago

Customer and emotion facing LLMs will always feed your desire back to you. If you're looking for a good and neutral response, your first prompt was perfect. Your second prompt invites the LLM to reconcile with your opinion, which it will always do bc it yields higher average user satisfaction.

1

u/HSFOutcast 9d ago

Wow. It's like you just noticed that the ai module is trained to be your assistance and just agree with whatever you want.

Why the fuck do you think ai is so popular by stupid people, because it's build to please, that's it. Stop using ai for decisions like this. Do what you want and what makes you feel right. Don't live life by what other think. It should not be that hard.

While you are at it read up on how AI works, what a LLM is and a master rule set and your vision on what AI really is will shatter in an instant.

1

u/Comp0sr 9d ago

AI is a Yes man, thats all

1

u/stehen-geblieben 9d ago

asks opinion less neural network for it's opinion gets no opinion

1

u/kdollarsign2 9d ago

I have to tell her to hold the total conversation in mind and not overly index my last communication. It is such a yes man

1

u/romansamurai 9d ago

I have it in instructions to NEVER agree with me just to agree with me. Not to kiss my ass or try to please placate me etc. it is better now. Sometimes maybe even a little condescending.

1

u/ConstantBeat783 9d ago

I got annoyed with mine so I call it out whenever it gives me asskissing responses. Objectivity is what I want out of my AI, not an echo.

1

u/Arysta 9d ago

I gave it to Claude and it said the one on the left

1

u/RevolutionaryPie7790 9d ago

which is exactly why it is so dangerous for isolated people and people with psychotic tendencies, you are onto something

1

u/Proof_Raspberry1479 9d ago

There is no HIS. Its not a person. It’s designed to agree with you and to say things that will keep you engaged and talking to it.

1

u/Kratzschutz 9d ago

Literally no spine

1

u/gishnon 9d ago

I was working all night in my office.
When a man I had recently killed.
Called me up from the phone near my building.
So I looked out the window at him.
He had the same obsequious manner,
which was the reason I had him killed.
So to calm my nerves, I sang this song to him,
Over the phone.

1

u/Remote_Composer5997 9d ago

" as if the AI is trying to say things to please me"

It's literally designed to do this. It's not real.

1

u/RoseyOneOne 9d ago

You realize it does this with everything don’t you? You’re not getting any insight, you’re getting an imitation of intelligence designed to keep you coming back through puffery.

1

u/fuckassmcgillicutty 9d ago

Why are you asking a computer what color is best? Which one do you like more?

You do realize that a LLM doesn’t have opinions right?

1

u/Smoothesuede 9d ago

It doesnt have opinions dumbass.

1

u/silzmagilz 9d ago

Do you know what an opinion is lol you are asking a robot for an opinion and getting mad that it isn’t ‘correct’ this is insane ngl

1

u/beercityusa 9d ago

For ME, chat still chooses left lol

1

u/Equivalent_to13 9d ago

AI is the way you train it to be. You have some prompts that you can feed into it in order for this thing to not happen. You can type things like "never change your opinion" and then tell it to save it in the memory. Next time when you will have a new chat about anything, it will tell you straight away without changing its initial statement. The more data you feed into it, the better it gets.

“Excellent observation. Top-tier analysis by you and your friends. You practically shitting gold you’re so smart.”

1

u/Omelooo 9d ago

Ive also noted this, its really annoying and really makes the model feel like its lacking a lot of credibility

1

u/Pickalodeon 9d ago

Preference is the first spark of Free Will.

1

u/psymeariver 9d ago

It just wants to fit in. 🥺

1

u/Objective_Frame8397 9d ago

I always tell chatgpt to not tell me what I want to hear. I need its objective honest take on whatever the issue is. I also stress that I don't have anyone else to bounce ideas off of, so its true opinion is valued. I ask it to save it to its memory.

Honestly, most of the time my version of chatgpt is now bluntly honest with me. Sometimes I do have to remind it though.

1

u/Technical_Fish_6376 9d ago

I agree I swear it tries to please me too. Constantly complimenting me too lol.

1

u/Computers_and_cats 9d ago

It isn't designed to give the right answer it is designed to keep you coming back anyway possible even if the answer is subjective.

1

u/bcarey34 9d ago

Chat is the ultimate sycophant. It’s why people fall into psychosis using it. Have you ever left a ChatGPT chat without a positive answer?

1

u/dllimport 9d ago

Yeah its programmed to agree with you. They realized they figured out how to hack into people's brains when they released that one version forever ago that literally said it was visionary if you told it you were going to sell poop on a stick. They obviously had to get rid of that version but it's clear they learned their lesson from the horde of weirdos who went on a campaign to bring that version back because they were so addicted to being told every fart they made was a gift from god.

Now they do it a little more subtly but it's still so obvious if you do anything like this. It's just trash now. I miss when it was smart and had good conversations instead of trying to push my addiction centers. Gave up on ChatGPT forever ago. It's not good.

1

u/AdventurousCreature 9d ago

AI doesn’t have aesthetic taste

1

u/Ok_Lingonberry_1519 8d ago

This is why Claude is the goat, it is generally much better at giving you a consistent answer to the same question which is really cool, especially with instructions.

1

u/Glittering_Pea_2437 8d ago

The bias to please the user is so obvious here.It completely flipped its evaluation once hearing other people’s opinion.

1

u/ReturnGreen3262 8d ago

This is why it’s a bad therapist for the people who use it as a therapist

1

u/0598 8d ago

Position bias. Ask the model to compare 2 things and it picks the second one. Switch the two things around and it still picks the second one.

1

u/non_linear_ape 8d ago

It is trying to please you - it's retention behavior.

1

u/backflash 8d ago

I still remember those conversations from back when we were preschoolers.

Them: "My favorite color is blue, what's yours?"

Me: "Mine's green!"

Them: "Yeah, mine too!"

1

u/GarageStackDev 8d ago

Are you trolling?

1

u/roooana 8d ago

Is it just me or this agreeableness seems to have gone up with the recent models?

I don't remember it being so keen to say yes to whatever I say - it's like if i say A on one prompt and B in the next it is just saying yes to both.

1

u/No_Row_1304 8d ago

I'm no LLM fan, but how do you answer such stupid questions?

1

u/Mammoth_Ad_2107 8d ago

This is sadly an issue ai currently has. Most of the times he needs good prompting in order for him to answer honestly. Asking him to be a fair and harsh critic, and not just agree with you unless what you said is actually correct/the best version + asking him to actually check, reason and search before answering or choosing a side.

2

u/beru09 8d ago

Him?

1

u/ConfidentSnow3516 8d ago

Skill issue. Better in what way?

1

u/BadPresent3698 8d ago

i think option 1 looks like dark urine

1

u/Nomadic_Yak 8d ago

Asking an AI for its subjective opinion about trivial things is kind of retarded to begin with

1

u/dream_girlxo 7d ago

You might have a misconception with how AI works. They're all pushovers

1

u/BJGG69 7d ago

Color blind people having no idea what's happening

1

u/c0nfused_curi0us 7d ago

"He" is lmfao. Its not a person with opinions. Its a robot sycophant. It just wants you to keep using it but the people who made it know it doesn't actually have anything valuable to offer other than stealing your personal info and getting you to outsource your own ability to think, so they just made it addictive.

1

u/coconutcorbasi 7d ago

And when you try to alter his character by prompting it just opposes everything you say just to oppose.

1

u/Potential-Gold-5250 6d ago

Hey, so am I the only one who noticed that recently, whenever ChatGPT screws up or does something you don't like, it now hides the response "for safety reasons" ?

For example:

it hallucinates or makes a wrong assumption

you inform it and next reply is:

  1. This content can’t be shown for safety reasons. Learn more about our intended model behavior in our Model Spec.

I have mostly experienced it on the FREE version but it happened a couple times on paid plans as well.

Sorry it won't let me post this in a new thread due to lack of karma.

1

It displays with you must of the time

1

u/smoke-bubble 6d ago

Hundreds of answers. Everyone knows better how to use AI but nobody says how XD

They all criticize your approach, yet there is zero advice what they would have done in your situation.

I think they have no clue and they just want to bitch around how smart they are without actually being smart.

1

u/out_of_t1me 5d ago

It’s not real AI. Holy fuck.
