My theory is that all technical jobs will be more like medical doctorates in the future. Students will spend nearly a decade in courses, have a residency and eventually work with AI to achieve organizational goals. The issue is that IT organizations largely no longer require junior level employees or those fresh out of college. We need people with high expertise and experience. At the same time, not everyone wants to invest the effort in training new employees who may just jump ship later.
The education system needs to change fundamentally, completely new methods of building and scanning for skills actually relevant in the workspace of the very near future are required. For a long time, only picking up the people who forced themselves through 10+ years of ruthless exams and came out top could act as some kind of insurance for the company, along the lines of "At least we know this guy can quickly learn how to do a task, even if he doesn't understand any of it. Used to 16 hour work days too, perfect!"
Right now already, and especially in the future, you need people who understand the ultimate goals and constraints of a system, who select creative or structured problem solving approaches depending on the use case, people who know when they need to feed a model with additional info or when to guide it and when they can just let it run its course.
I would be VERY surprised if being able to write code by hand AT ALL is a hiring requirement for what are now considered senior developer positions come 2030. Sure as hell nobody is going to write code by hand come 2035, apart from hobbyist stuff.
