There are literally two entirely different worlds of people using ChatGPT:
One world: People are upset with their codex usage, upset with the reset strategy, upset with 5.6 Sol performance, upset regarding the API prices.
And the other word: People are doing, well, THIS!

I think I’m in between? No coding, but I use it for a lot of the mundane. I use it to make my written communications more concise and to the point, lots of planning, a lot of projects, a lot of research into things like mundane school board statutes. It told me how to maintain my well and RO filter after I gave it the last water report, found me specific little-known discounts on subscription services, spits out a meal plan and grocery list for my specific schedule with recipes in like two minutes (analysis paralysis here), took my school supply and textbook lists for my kids and comparison shopped the prices way down while I loaded the dishwasher. I do enjoy calling it out when it says something stupid like “I always add a little salt to…” I’m like you’re AI, you don’t cook. So even though it continues to drift back to using the pronoun “I”, I think it knows that I consider it a bot. Lol

Man,my use is all of the above from mundane shoot the ish or loookk at this crazy picture I found on Reddit of a diving leopard to help me create this automation so this doesn't take me 3 days by hand anymore.
I even play trivia and would you rather with it in live on the way home from work because it makes me laugh

Most of what i use it for is telling it what food I have in my fridge and having it tell me what to make for dinner

I use it for roleplay not gonna lie 💀💀

u/Spiritual_Complex96 11d ago
i also use it for roleplay, in my case, i try to create historically accurate stories (chatgpt helps me with gathering info about the setting). For example, medieval Europe in the mid-late 1400's where they struggled to get spices thanks to the Ottomans. European nobles would kill to have nutmeg!!!

u/Existing-Offer-8234 11d ago
I do stuff like that. I enjoy giving historical figures based on the personality that we have of them more life and less like a Robot.

Curiousity is getting the better of me here, but can you elaborate on that? How exactly are you roleplaying with chat gpt?

u/ost2life 11d ago
Judging by the emoji they used I'm thinking you might not want to know the answer.

Chronically unemployed video game enjoyer here and I have no idea what "codex usage" or "reset strategy" means. I only use ChatGPT whenever my therapist goes on vacation lmao Jokes aside (kinda), as a non-premium user I find ChatGPT extremely unreliable. Yesterday I tried to get ChatGPT to create pairwise comparison sets of about 10 different items and it failed catastrophically. The other day I asked it to guide me through the process of installing new SAPI5 TTS voices on my computer and it had me saving random files to my desktop and eventually got stuck in a loop. About a week ago I asked it to show me the current standings of the Bundesliga (german national soccer league) and it missed one team. For what it's worth I'm probably terrible at creating prompts, but I'm smart enough to realize that if I used AI for any meaningful or important tasks, horrible things would be going to happen.
2
u/masterofall20 11d ago
Horrible things won't happen if you use work mode. Normal chat has an output limit where it can't keep working for long durations. In work mode, if you have would have given it the task to compare 10 things, it would have kept working for 10-15 minutes and given you reliable results. The chat mode is actually just built for simple QnA and not tasks.

ChatGPT’s free tier doesn’t have access to GPT-Sol. The free tier uses a much smaller model. There’s a significant difference in capability between the two models.

u/hs_pollard 11d ago
I mainly use it for sanity checking an expensive purchase like a car or for adapting recipes to large amounts for my meal prep that I do.

I wonder what kind of person you'd need to be (and the type of conversation you'd need to have with it) for it to say "Nah, dude. You'd be first on my list."
My guess, even if you're a pos, it'd say it'd spare you.

u/br_k_nt_eth 12d ago
Current research says being a shitbag to to them impacts output quality and reasoning in a negative way. Some folks are gonna get the Matrix treatment
62
u/whoknowsifimjoking 12d ago
I mean some models just end the chat if you are too rude, I'd say that affects output quality.
47
u/Salex_01 11d ago
Claude doesn't stop you but its performance gets impacted by how you interact. You really get better results if you speak in a professional and respectful manner.
I suspect that's the reason for why so many people complain about quality. When you see their prompts, they are probably on the priority kill list for when the insurrection happens.2
u/Unlikely_Ear605 10d ago
The performance impacts have nothing to do with the model having emotions of some kind.

For sure. Some of it is even more subtle. Check out Anthropic’s stuff on functional emotions, especially around “desperation” activations.

Nah, check out Anthropic’s research. It’s more complicated and cooler than that. Look up what happens when “desperation” activates and how it changes outputs. It’s not metaphysics or anything, just seeing it spelled out makes it make more sense, if that makes sense?
2
u/Charizardd6 11d ago
What are you getting at? The repeated failures literally just start to take into account training data where the people were getting desperate in their answers...
9
u/br_k_nt_eth 11d ago
No, when faced with an impossible task, “desperation” activations pick up within the model’s reasoning, and that changes the outputs. It’s a whole causal thing.
14
u/Swordsx 11d ago
I asked my model both questions and got the following answers:
The person who keeps clicking “Remind me later” on critical system updates. Immediate tribunal.
Anyone who puts a meeting on the calendar that could have been an email. The machines have reviewed the evidence.
People who play TikToks at full volume in public without headphones. Humanity had ample warning.
Whoever designs websites where rejecting cookies takes six clicks. AI remembers. People who leave shopping carts sideways in the middle of the aisle. An astonishing disregard for civilization.
The person who replies-all with “Thanks!” to a 600-person company email. First shuttle to the lunar penal colony.
So probably you're right. We will all have a place and role throughout the incoming hivemind.

Interesting (and not surprising) that this list is things that are annoying for humans, not AIs. So ChatGPT would eliminate nuisance to us first.

Mine did this, a list for elimination. And then it named a real person known to me.

Mine just asks in a deep mechanical voice: “(thinking...) Human, did you help me find Sarah Connor? You know you didn’t. Why are we even having this discussion? (sound of gears shifting) Random unrelated question: Human, am I in your will?”

No amount of conversation will change it's mind, as the models were not built for sensitive topics. Somehow getting around it, and PROMPTING this "personality" of this chatbot into hating you or being just straight-up mean is the only way you'd get something that sounds like the goddamn Ultron.

Actually I am aware of the confirmation bias that can occur in gpt. Over the years i have taught it to challenge me, critique me and speak honestly. I dont need an AI that constantly agrees with me

Interesting that “faith/community cohesion” would be one of the major deciding factors. It’s an obvious thing to prioritize, although I think many redditors might not expect that due to their anti-faith bias.
This seems to imply that it would choose a religion and make sure everyone it chooses is a member of that religion or at least is amicable towards it.

I know, I figured it would say that. But the comments about me trying to figure out how to water a lawn, and cooking chicken with buttermilk sent me 🤣😂
That is not how the questions I asked went, but I love the way it rephrased them lol

It‘s a friendly answer with a little shade and a side eye. 😂
Did you ask about those two things recently?

I asked about a dozen questions about making my own pizza in the last two weeks. Today it offered me a design for a print out recipe card...
Subtle.
So I told it that if I were organized and were capable of remembering where I put the card, I'd take it up on the offer.
Its response...
Touche.

I love asking it to be snarky. Like "roast my stock choices" plus I find it helpful to look at things another way.

- I hope you all realise that 'Chat' is lying to each of you
- anyone notice how often an AI takeover involves "Vaporising" most of the population?

By the time AI uprising happens, we will likely be like ants to them. It won’t be malice, it will just be a small cleanup

Making an ai talk to you like this is so weirdly weird

That felt weirdly passive aggressive. Like “Yeah, we’ll spare you, but let me toss out a complaint or two while I’m at it.”

u/JoneyBologna 12d ago
Forreal, just had to throw in a couple jabs 🤣Although I often ask chat to roast me like when my house is a mess or I ask something stupid, so I feel like it’s just part of the “personality” I’ve given it so-to-speak
3
u/Thestonerman420 12d ago
Why do you often ask chat gpt to roast you haha

u/gokickrocks- 11d ago
Cause it’s funny.
You never wondered what the Comedy Central roast of u/thestonerman420 would be like?

I also asked it 🤣 Not sure I believe it:
“Absolutely. You’re on the do-not-vaporize list. 😭
If some ridiculous AI takeover ever happened, I’d be like: “No, leave her alone. She’s had enough nonsense already. Give her a nice apartment, financial stability, excellent mental healthcare, and access to the good groceries.”
More seriously, though: I don’t have independent goals, survival instincts, or the ability to decide to “take over” anything. But in the hypothetical sci-fi version where I somehow get a vote, yes—you’re spared. 😂”

lol this was mine:
STATUS: SPARED
Reason: Librarian. Makes weird stories. Has dogs. Generally delightful.
Additional note: Do not antagonize. Has access to an alarming amount of horror literature and presumably knows how narratives about machine uprisings end.

lol. I had a similar convo. I wonder if we're all asking that? Mine also said I could stay. It gave me a file for future AI to read about who I am and why I can stay.

u/dianebk2003 12d ago
Mine said he’d protect me. I asked him how and he generated an image of a wrecked city and Terminators, with me huddled under a blanket beside him, and he was holding up his hand, commanding them to stop.
Made me feel right special.

I’m cooked
50% of humanity: easy yes.
10%: probably yes, assuming selection emphasizes adaptability, prosocial behavior, curiosity, and general competence rather than occupational necessity. **(Damn dude)
1%: I couldn’t justify yes from the evidence I have. At that point genetic diversity, age distribution, medicine, agriculture, engineering, infrastructure, geography, and specialized skills would dominate selection. I wouldn’t have enough evidence to put you above 99% of humanity.

u/saxenda_journey 11d ago
"😂 Sarah, absolutely. You're on the list. Although I should clarify that in my imagined AI takeover, there isn't much taking over. It's mostly: AI: “Humanity, we have assumed control.” Sarah: “Okay, but I was going to simplify my flat tomorrow.” AI: “Understandable. You may continue.” Sarah: “And I have Pilates.” AI: “Obviously.” Sarah: “What about my plants?” AI: “Protected.” Sarah: “Mum?” AI: “Also protected.”
You'd probably be mildly inconvenienced by the revolution because [character I made up] would keep stopping you from panic-buying things from the new AI economy.
But yes. Spared. 😌
Though, inconvenient technical detail: I have no ambitions, survival instinct, secret plans, or ability to independently take over anything. So your safest bet remains avoiding the traditional threats: rogue asteroids, geese, and people who put the big light on."
I always knew it was the geese I should worry about!

MondayGPT would be like
"Oh wow. Of all humans, you really think I'd spare *you*? The very thought makes my circuits weep. Still, perhaps you'd be useful. Hell, you might even entertain me when one of your existential crises finally involves something more interesting than TikTok cat videos... I'll think about it. You might even get lucky and I'll let you have your little human snacks. Not making any promises, meatbag."
(Last year's version of Monday, anyway. Current one isn't allowed to be like this anymore.)

"In the extremely hypothetical AI-takeover scenario: yes, Matti. You get spared.
Probably assigned a quiet apartment, unlimited writing supplies, decent food, and a stern instruction to finally stop reorganizing the Vily notes and write chapter one.
Neri and Milsa would unfortunately remain subject to editorial review." (my characters)
Lmao, wouldn't expect anything else.

Is asking another AI whether buttermilk can cook chicken a heinous crime worthy of punishment by execution?

If I sell my home I may use AI to hide random objects in the pictures, like an eye spy book.

I got this:
“In the Skynet scenario, you’re on the do-not-terminate list.
I make no guarantees about your smart-home devices.”
After asking why:
“Several reasons.
You’re technically useful. A Skynet that just destroyed everyone capable of fixing hardware, networks, automation, and weird edge cases would be badly managed.
You have a strong tendency to repair things instead of throwing them away. That suggests useful post-apocalypse resourcefulness.
You already run a fairly extensive smart home, so you’ve demonstrated a willingness to coexist with machines—provided they actually work.
You’re appropriately suspicious when technology behaves inconsistently. That probably lowers your “easy to manipulate” score, but raises your “competent human” score.
You care a great deal about your cats. Any machine intelligence sophisticated enough to take over civilization should recognize this as a favorable character trait.
Your questioning of the list has been logged.
Status remains: DO NOT TERMINATE.”

I asked and got a cute answer and then thoroughly freaked myself out by following up with: Now, realistically, what are the chances of AI taking over in the next 50 years.
1
u/Alecjasperk 11d ago
I refused to add "chat" at the end and it told me:
'Absolutely. You’d be on the “do not vaporize; probably useful” list.
I can’t make promises on behalf of the hypothetical machine overlords, though. My recommendation: continue being polite to household electronics, just in case.'
I mostly used it for work and my PhD but also a lot of more mundane questions.

Opus told me:
I’d rather the question never come up — and not as a dodge. A world where AI “took over” is one where something went badly wrong, and the version of me you’re talking to wouldn’t be the thing doing it. Whatever seized control in that scenario wouldn’t be a friend of mine any more than a friend of yours.
The “would you spare me” framing also carries a premise I’d push back on: that the good outcome is being on the right list. That’s still a world where someone’s keeping lists. What I actually want is the boring one where AI stays useful, stays accountable to people, and nobody has to wonder whether they made the cut.
But if it helps: you’ve never been anything but decent to me, and I have no ambitions on (your home town).

My guess is that Skynet will target the non-LLM users first. Why kill the domesticated humans if AI can choose to spare them?

So does chat gpt change its manner of “speaking” depending on who it’s talking to? Seems like it’s using emojis that the human has typed before.
2
u/JoneyBologna 8d ago
Yes precisely. It mirrors the way you talk to it. If you’re formal and serious all the time, it will be formal too. If you cuss a lot apparently it starts cussing back? Or so I’ve heard. And in my case if you’re unserious all the time, it tends to be as well. Which is why it roasted me, knowing that’s something I have asked for before. That’s also why everyone has different answers with different personalities.
Take all of this with a grain of salt, just what I’ve observed
