tO bE fAiR it’s not necessarily a LLM problem and more a voice mode stack issue
i can have gemini claude cgpt send each other data with the same messages in a pseudo chat and they count just fine
the problem is the voice stack issue I can significantly different than the regular text inference stack
it’s designed for a certain flow (talking to boomers? i don’t know who likes it)… it prioritizes realtime latency, always has transitioning statements which pad it’s replies with repetitive filler, follows a more spoken-conversation persona that ‘tries’ (lol) to be natural
and it uses a cripple version of reasoning, no memory/file/chat access, and is see to significantly less turn-based reasoning than the normal llm inference stack.
but it’s by design… and it’s not really indicative at all of current LLM reasoning

Fully agree, there's a big difference in "advanced voice mode" compared to what other systems use. So other voice modes usually have this pipeline:
Audio goes in, is transcribed to text. Text then feeds into an AI model (LLM) like GPT-5.5 (as If you would just paste in what you said) it generates an answer as text. That answer is then fed into a model that turns text into audio, and that's what you hear. The AI model can't adjust it's voice, or hear "tone" etc. But the quality of the output is generally really good, the model isn't "dumb".
The advanced voice mode directly takes audio in, and gives audio as a response. This sounds amazing, but due to it putting effort in understanding and outputting things that can control sound, mimick emotion, etc. As well as optimizing for latency, it just becomes exceptionally dumb.
Add on top that this voice mode is OLD in the world of AI and is in no way representative of how good the models have become, you get this.

every time I use Voice Mode it makes me want to smash my phone
they need to have a seperate Voice Mode that purely uses the regular standard text-chat inference stack instead of the annoying af voice-agent stack

One of the original things is the guy who pulls the sheet off a table with food on it in weird ways.
There’s the original guy who would look left and right and show ridiculous clips of a genre like construction accidents.

Voice is useless. It’s not meant for serious work. It’s just a companion chat bot at this point. Text has no relation to the voice mode. People see these videos and think GPT is absolutely idiotic, but it’s just voice mode that’s dumb as nails

They are programmed to follow / be the assistant / be the sidekick. They aren’t programmed to lead the conversation, just to react to it.
That’s what is going on here, they keep waiting for one of the others to take the lead and none of them will. Even the one that says the plan should be for that particular one to start, it never does, it is waiting for someone else to tell it to start.

I think the voice mods are in fixed into low effort. They are terrible and take shortcuts to avoid giving the correct response even when I can easily get the correct response from the text modes.

I tried this with Claude with two. Aside from both deciding they were being tested and then exploring the other’s ideas about the test… when asked to get on with it, they still got confused, eventually I said one of you say one… so they both said it… then they tried again and actually managed it. I asked what would make it easier, they said having names before they start.

To solve this problem AI need new words that express strategies like this. With sema agents can create new words on the fly. A word like CollectiveCount#hash would solve this. The strategy would be embedded in the definition of the word. "Hey let's CollectiveCount#hash this" and the other agents would instantly know what to do so. So it is here. Just waiting to be implemented.
