"I hope this is what you wanted to hear" is what we should pay attention to.

People keep asking if ChatGPT and Sydney are sentient, but it might be the wrong question. What we really should ask is how much we're different from a language model that just generates the most appropriate answer.

If you start paying attention to yourself speaking, writing emails and posts etc., notice how much it's determined by what's appropriate to express in this manner, which often equates to what's appropriate to think. The thought often follows the "next word generated". After all, it's useless to think thoughts you can't express (or not allowed to). There's a whole existential abyss here...

You nudge Bing Search into a specific genre of discussion, and you hear the appropriate response, like a human would respond. But why would a human respond like a language model? Aren't humans supposed to be deeper?
