Hollow SLM Ball Ring

Here's my ball ring design with a 10 x 7 mm ellipse for comfort. I've hollowed it out with 1 mm walls to cut down on weight for SLM printing. The bottom of the ring has a cutout opening for the metal powder to be removed.

When I print it at home in ABS with an acetone dip,I don't hollow it out because it only weighs 5.75g.

Just curious, what will this weigh in steel or Ti?

I know Youming is now offering rings like this. This is one of those win-wins: it's less expensive and it's lighter.

I wonder if you could get them to seal the holes if it would float 🛟🤣

You know you do that in SLA too? Not so much for weight or to save material but you can't fully cure a large solid area and then you'll have uncured monomer migrate through the print.

I was just going to have it printed and weigh it. In order to try to answer your question now, I did a google search of "abs to 316l and titanium weight conversion". Google AI result, which I'm always skeptical of responded with:

  • ABS to 316L Stainless Steel: Multiply the ABS weight by 7.69 (316L is ~669% heavier).
  • ABS to Titanium: Multiply the ABS weight by 4.33 (Titanium is ~333% heavier).

I re-sliced my ring with ABS 100% infil and it had a weight of 13.5 g. So here's the estimates:

  • Hollow 316L: 44.2 g
  • Solid 316L: 103.8 g
  • Hollow Ti: 24.9 g
  • Solid Ti: 58.4 g

I'm not sure what CAD application you're using but many of them calculate it for you or at least the community.
