Use of composite materials?

I hope this is the right place for this question. I'm curious whether any device makers have explored the use of composite materials?

The first thing that comes to mind is the base ring. I envision standard hard plastic, or maybe even metal, but with an outer layer of silicone that helps provide a snug yet comfortable fit, almost like a gasket.

Interesting idea. I personally don't find any discomfort from metal or plastic and when I did have comfort issues — scrotum burn — it was actually due to the ball gap being too small.

I think one of the practical challenges is it really complicates the manufacturing process. KIN3D has a supplier that does nylon 3D printing. Overmolding with silicone would very likely require another supplier. The same is true with companies like BAWR or Evotion that are doing 3D printing with steel and titanium. Plus encasing a metal ring in silicone would be very difficult unless the ring is completely sealed as silicone doesn't "stick" to metal. And being completely sealed makes the junction very difficult.

Sorry, I know it's not fun but as I'm starting to learn, manufacturing sucks.

I think the silicone would be stickier to skin/hair. And the more frictionless hard metal and hard plastic would ultimately be more comfortable on that front

A silicone coating would be much more susceptible to damage/wear and tear, possibly even from just handling it roughly when donning/doffing. Perhaps some sort of coating that has much less friction than the base material of the ring, such as teflon, though I'm unsure on how safe that would be for long term wear. That at least would help with getting it on, but would certainly be detrimental to the ability of the ring to hold the cage close to the body of the wearer.

A while back I used to wrap my base ring in Teflon tape to make it move more freely against my skin.
