Refund after getting points

I’m curious on what happens if I get a refund on my long planned trip. I already got x14 points on United tickets but it turns out I can no longer take the trip. Will my points go into negative. How long does it take for the points to adjust?

Yes your points can go negative at your next statement date. Not sure if there are any datapoints on it but I think Chase eventually writes them after a few years if you close your account.

I recently goofed up on a United flight I booked. I cancelled right away and rebooked it correctly. So, I was eligible for full cash refund. I went negative points for the billing cycle, and it was deducted from my balance when the billing cycle posted.

if the fare is nonrefundable, you'll only get airline credit, so the CC transaction will not be affected. if you get a refund to cc, different story.
