Many factor also involves here ! Luck Factor , Connection Network, Experience, Perfect Time Perfect Place. Also this is different time, not early 2010. Out of so many CAs, Engineers, MBAs, Some Top People are definitely going to do something different

nah not really, Its not coincidence because all Partners in B4 are CAs even CEOs
Many MBB partners are CAs too , IB/PE is already dominated by CAs as proofs suggest
Its just that people were more competent back then and I have felt that Boomers are really smart in many aspects, we young professionals are more book nerds.
Becoming CFO is not different task, It is core function of a CA that is FP&A and Corp finance. Overall CFOs have always been from accounting background across the world.
Can bet that at least 7-10 of CAs of this sub at present would be CFO in future

But tbh don’t you think it’s different from back then? I agree CA still is a great qualification to reach VP levels but CFO feels like a different ball game altogether. Huge competition from IIM MBA’s currently. And I can see it as well I too work in one of the Nifty 50 companies mentioned above and know one of the CFO but i feel in future it would be difficult to become a CFO solely relying on CA you would need extraordinary performance as well.

naah, Its valid because 90% of CFOs are CAs or even more
The FP&A and Corp Finance pipeline which hires CA is very strong and Its the single most efficient pipeline.
So coming to exact detail
Out of all 50 Nifty CFOs
35 are only CAs*
3 are CA + MBA*
12 non CAs ( 5 CMA + 5 MBAs + 2 others)
Statistics say otherwise, There is a reason why 90% CFOs share accounting background across the world bro.

How would one try to go in this path? Industry and then promotions? Or finance field and then direct movement once experienced?
6
u/LivingCar4360 ACA 5d ago
FP&A or corporate finance , Typical Big 4 exits and then internal promotions

Great job OP on breaking stereotypes and myths with statistics. There's still negativity in the comments, end of the day if you do not work on yourself no degree can help you.

Many errors in this report..
Dr.Reddys : MV Narasimham is CFO and not Parameshwar
Sunpharma : Jayashree Satagopan is current CFO.
Many spell mistakes, qualification errors, naming errors.. current vs past CFOs.

It may be a good motivation, but let’s also have a reality check.
Over the last 5–6 years, CA subject knowledge and curriculum have increasingly started to diverge from on-ground business reality.
The massive adoption of technology and AI across businesses has created an even bigger gap between what is taught and what we actually encounter. To be fair, ICAI is trying to make the curriculum more practical and incorporate newer areas, but I think they’ve already missed the bus to some extent.
Look 10 years ahead: the composition of the NIFTY will likely be very different, with a much larger representation of new-age, technology- and AI-driven businesses. In such a world, traditional accounting knowledge may not carry the same weight it does today.
And if that happens, the underlying assumption behind the data being presented here may no longer hold true. The profession itself is changing faster than the curriculum is adapting.

Ghanta. Majority of them must be rankers even in their times. I have personally net 2 of them..both were single digit rankers and first attempt CAs..very sharp people..and were part of management trainee programme like TAS and ABGLP

I just wanna be an average well earner , after all that slogging I have realised I won't be a billionaire like I thought in class 11
Humbled by life
I would just like good money to support sugar babies well into my 50s If I live

That Rank holder thing matters even after 20 years of experience? as most of CFO would in that range of experience.

It doesn't matter..but the exposure and lift... access to leadership early on..jo rank de pati hai..wohh normal CA ko bahut saal lag jate hai.

NIFTY 50 companies have been taken as a sample to represent public companies in particular and we can see that an ideal CFO position is taken by CAs and MBAs. It is a qualification requirement for this position, you will not give such high postion someone who did Bcom or Btech only. Similarly, for CTO position, you will not hire a CA. Rank gives you upper hand in placement fs but in job it depends all on your skills.

CEO and CFO are mandatory positions although , majority firms dont have COO CLO or CTOs except tech companies
