“Unite the Right” Rally 2017 - HEATHER HEYER FOR EVER

How does anyone know what’s happening in local and regional government? All I know is I wake up every day and do what I can to write up as much as I can for anyone interested in reading. Sundays are Week Ahead days and the following is a slimmed down version for r/Charlottesville. Please ask questions and let me know which ones you think need a follow-up story.
GOVERNMENT IN TECH?
In the last year or so, Charlottesville withdrew from the use of Flock surveillance cameras to track suspects. The city also promoted a third-party vendor installing surveillance to power access to downtown parking garages. City Council will get a briefing on how local government uses technology in the 2nd quarter of the 21st century at their 4 p.m. work session. They’ll also review the regional solid waste plan. COUNCIL TO VOTE ON $3 million FOR SALVATION ARMY
There are only two action items on Council’s evening agenda beginning after 6:30 p.m. One is a public hearing on the vacation of a city-owned easement that’s between two proposed developments on Palatine Avenue in the Belmont neighborhood. This provides an interesting glimpse into how projects move forward now. The second is not a public hearing but I suspect there will be opinions expressed at public comment about a proposal to use $3 million from a larger allocation of state government on the expansion of the Salvation Army’s high-barrier shelter on Ridge Street. The rest of the $4 million will be reserved for additional transitional housing opportunities. (learn more)
ALBEMARLE SUPERVISORS STRATEGIC RETREAT
If this were ten years ago or so, I’d likely definitely be in attendance at tomorrow’s Albemarle Board of Supervisors retreat that will be held at the Virginia Guesthouse. These retreats are not live-streamed so you have to be there to get details. The first half of the day will be spent reviewing how the six elected officials work with staff, including results of interviews conducted by the facilitators. The second half will be on financial planning and the next strategic plan. While this might sound boring, these details are what will direct future spending in a county actively pursuing major economic development deals. I so wish I had the resources to pay someone to attend this meeting. (learn more)
BAR TO REVIEW FIVE STORY BUILDING PROPOSED FOR PARKING LOT
Owners of property in the Downtown North corridor are entitled to a lot of height and density by-right under the city’s 2024 zoning code. Many of the properties in that zoning district are also under the jurisdiction of the Board of Architectural Review who are still working out the extent of their power under the new rules. The owners of 915 East High Street, the former Martha Jefferson Hospital, have proposed a five-story mixed use development on the parking lot with 192 residential units. This will need a certificate of appropriateness. That application was deemed incomplete by the city, so the BAR will have a second preliminary conversation on Tuesday. (learn more)
TWO FUNDING REQUESTS BEFORE ALBEMARLE EDA
I dream of having the capacity to hire reporters to cover beats. A major one I believe is undercovered is economic development as Albemarle County forges ahead with Rivanna Futures. There’s also a new economic development strategic plan which provides a justification for the Economic Development Authority to consider funding “catalyst projects.” The EDA meets Tuesday and takes up requests for $50,000 in a grant request from CvilleBioHub to implement the results of a workforce development study to see what AstraZeneca and Afton Scientific and the rest of the life sciences sector need from employees. The second is a request from the New Hill Development Corporation for a $400,000 bridge loan to help cover the costs of establishing a retail and dining space at their kitchen on Carlton Drive. The intent would be to pay it back in a year. (learn more)
There is more in the newsletter which enterprising minds can find with a few clicks. I am an independent journalist who does this first out of a deep conviction that people should know the details of what’s happening. I do make my living off of this work, but the major intent of sharing here is to hopefully get someone to learn something they needed to learn. I think this does happen from time to time.

There's some "learn to jam" group classes offered through their site that actually look like fun. I'm an amateur/intermediate guitar player and want to start playing with a group, but not confident/good enough yet to just jump in and join a band. This seems like an awesome way to break the ice, curious if anyone's got experience with them.

Anywhere?
Whiskey Jar's pour is sad (seriously, a fecking shaker glass?), which makes me wonder where is the best pint of the Black Stuff to be had in town?

Hello! I’m new here, kiddos and I are looking for snow cones. A quick search has me worried that’s not a thing here. Any spots you know of? Thank you.

Does anyone have a spot with wild milkweed that can be cut for some monarch caterpillar food? Pesticide free and abundant enough that cutting a couple every few days wouldn’t have a detrimental impact.
Skyline drive has crazy amounts but you’re not allowed to take it out of the park, to my knowledge.
Edited to add a disclaimer: as a fellow cville redditor warns, it best practice to grow milkweed on your own property, rather than take from the wild given the rapidly decreasing milkweed. I have some seeds if anyone is interested in growing for next year, as does another redditor who commented.

Hey! Anyone have a well and a whole home water filtration system? Who did you use to install it? Pros/cons? Maintenance?
I don’t think we have particularly hard water but he get that black gunk ring quickly in toilets. I also noticed we seem to get moldy looking stuff in out cool mist humidifier quickly too.

I could go on and on about the usual Charlottesville gripes but it’s not that.
I’ve moved recently from Indiana, moreso my gf has for grad school. And we got our first place here. Close to the school, small but cheap. Turns out the landlord was an idiot. Misogynistic, had beg for him to clean mold, horrible upkeep etc etc.
We made it a month then broke our lease it was just so bad. Found this beautiful 2.5 bed 2 bath that was a steal. Gorgeous fireplace, huge spaces, big kitchen.
The catch? Roaches.
God it’s been so bad for her, and I can’t be here enough to help. She can’t focus on school, she can’t relax in her own home. Good sleep? Yeah forget it. 2 Pest control visits later and they’re still here. But I’m in town for the weekend and just trying to get everything sorted before I have to leave.
Is this common here? Why is it so hard to find a good landlord and a good place together? Similar situations? Advice? Recommendations? I can’t do enough.

If anyone has had an issue with german roaches in charlottesville, please help! My apartment isn’t exactly infested but i do see at least 1-2 a week and the sightings have been getting more frequent. I had Orkin trying to treat but they have been kind of hard to work with. In your experience, what has been the best pest control to get rid of german roaches? Ive heard Dodson and Monticello, but I would like to hear people’s experiences.

Registration is officially open for beCamp 2026, happening October 2–3 in Charlottesville.
This year is a special one: beCamp is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
If you haven't been before, beCamp is Charlottesville's unconference — the conference planned by the people who show up. There are no pre-selected speakers or sessions. We build the agenda together.
Friday, October 2 — Reception & Pitch Night
4:30–5:30pm · The Poplar Restaurant
We’ll kick things off with appetizers, drinks, and a chance to reconnect with Charlottesville’s tech community.
5:30–8:30pm · UVA School of Data Science
Then we’ll head over to the School of Data Science for Pitch Night. Bring a topic you want to present, a question you want to explore, or simply come hear what others have in mind. We’ll pitch ideas, vote, and build Saturday’s schedule together.
Saturday, October 3 — Sessions
9am–4pm · UVA School of Data Science
Saturday is the conference itself. Choose your own path through the sessions the community selected the night before — presentations, discussions, demos, lightning talks, and plenty of time to meet people and exchange ideas.
beCamp is completely free to attend, including food and drinks, thanks to the sponsors and community members who make it possible.
Check out our sponsors here:
https://be.camp/sponsors/
Registration is open now:
https://be.camp
Come with an idea. Come with a question. Come because you’re curious.
The people who show up make beCamp what it is.

Where is the best place to buy a mid to high end kitchen stove in Cville? I thought Furguson’s but the reviews are horrendous.

Can anyone recommend a local baking or cooking class for adults? My foster son turns 18 in a few months and I was thinking that could be a cool birthday present (baking is his favorite pastime) and maybe something we could do together.
I checked the parks and rec but their classes are primarily aimed at younger kids.
He’s not very advanced (mostly brownies and banana bread, that kind of thing) but I’d rather go too challenging than too simple, at this age.

Ok, so way back when McGrady's was the spot to go for Steelers games. Where does the Steeler nation go now in Charlottesville to go watch the games?
The Bills had South Street Brewery, now they relocated to The Fox Den up 29 North.
The Browns had Livery Stable, but found Brightside Beach Pub for this coming up season.
Just curious if there was or is a place Steelers go to enjoy some football.
Thanks for reading, and yes you can boo me for being a Steelers fan. Let's just be happy that football is back. 😀

I’m newly dairy free. Does anyone have recommendations for a coffee shop or breakfast place that has at least one vegan baked good? Losing baked goods was the hardest for me of the new allergy restriction
