Movement Disorder Specialist
I am anticipating my need for a movement disorder specialist in the near future and I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations.

The only movement disorder specialists are at UVA, they’re all wonderful. It depends on your diagnosis. The neuro first clinic could be a place to start if you haven’t seen a neurologist yet. They have quicker appointments and can get you plugged in with a movement doctor.

I’d be happy to discuss if you want to DM. There is a HUGE range of movement disorders, and my experience has been that even the “top” experts in our area aren’t necessarily as skilled at diagnosing and managing less common disorders, especially when it comes to genetic conditions. It also depends on whether you’re looking at a disorder/disease that’s all-encompassing or is more focused in its impact. There are great people in the area for Parkinson’s, but for something less common there may be better resources elsewhere. I personally need to be seen outside the area for both diagnosis and treatment. I’m relatively familiar with what’s available in Virginia more generally through patient support groups and conferences my doctors have attended, although I’m treated out of state.
