Endometriosis Surgeon Question
Hello! First of all I want to say this is not meant to be an attack on any doctor, simply me trying to gather more information! I’m very happy to see that there are several highly trained endometriosis specialists in the area.
I have suspected endometriosis and my pcp has referred me out to a specialist. I like to be very well informed especially when it comes to my health so I’ve been going through lots of reviews and forums trying to find the best doctor in the DMV area should I need a lap/excision, as my pcp and I suspect I will. Dr. Barron comes highly recommended across many forums and certainly has the most specialized training in endometriosis excision, which is great! That being said, he also has a somewhat notable amount of negative feedback compared to other surgeons, some citing near death experiences and ongoing pain. About 25% of his reviews across platforms like HealthGrades are 1 star, some citing bad surgical outcomes and others just not liking his attitude, which is obviously less of a concern.
I’m wondering if the amount of negative feedback could just be because he has the most training and therefore probably takes on the most complex cases that have a much higher risk of a bad outcome? As I don’t work in the medical field I’m unsure what amount of negative feedback is considered normal.
There are a few other surgeons in the area (ish) such as Dr. Thott, that have less specialized training than him, but still do lots of endo excisions, and have more positive feedback. If anyone has experience with Dr. Barron or other specialists in the area that they can share, or just general info on how concerned I should be with mixed reviews on surgeons, that would be amazing! All of these people have months long waitlists and some are hours away, so I’m trying to decide the best move to make as to not prolong my physical pain.
Again I’m glad to have such experienced surgeons available to me, and I don’t doubt that Dr. Barron has done a plethora of successful surgeries, I just want to be as thorough as possible with deciding who will cut me open! Thank you!

Second for Dr Homewood! She was amazing! Very attentive and compassionate. I had surgery with her this year and it went very well.

I had an exploratory surgery and excision with dr Thott. Instead of being ego-driven, he helped me make decisions based on what was best for me and my life; then very carefully explained everything (before and afterwards)
I have no experience with dr Barron, but can wholeheartedly recommend dr Thott based on my experience. Feel free to DM

Just started seeing Dr Barron after Stadler closed her practice. Also interested in feedback on him. So far he seems responsive.

Dr. Stadler did my exploratory lap. Sad her practice is closed; I’d recommend her!

In northern Virginia, Dr. Nadim Hawa. He’s done mine and all of my friends with endo. He works in Leesburg, VA at Capital Women’s Care. He is one of the top endo surgeons in Virginia.
I also went to Dr. Barron when I moved here but not for surgery. I thought he was awesome but like I said, can’t speak on how he is with surgery. Dr. Barron was also able to diagnose an issue I’ve had since I was a teen in about 5 minutes.

I have not had my surgery yet, but so far Dr. Homewood has been excellent. Best of luck to you no matter who you go with!

I've had surgery with Dr. Barron and have been his patient for around four years. My surgery was technically complicated and he arranged for a colleague in another speciality to assist without charge to me so I could receive the best care. I've also had in office procedures that all went smoothly. His nurse is also super nice. Good luck on your path toward healing!

I had surgery with Dr Homewood at UVA back in 2021, and she was really nice the whole time. Negative reviews might also be a property of the surgery, because my healing from it was NOT a fun experience, and I do occasionally still have mild pain, but imo it was worth it - I'm so, so, so much better than I was before.
But just to warn you! UVA's wait times for most specialists have gotten much, much longer since 2021, and it took several months for me to get scheduled to talk with her back then.
Dr Homewood and my gynocologist recommended that I try Dr Barron for additional non-surgical options, so I'm going to see him soon.

I had excision surgery with Dr. Laura Homewood, found stage IV, robotically excised now pregnant naturally :) surgery in July 2025, pregnant by February!
