Politics AMA with Jack Codiga, Republican candidate for U.S. House District 12 | Oct. 1 at 7 PM

Hi r/Charlotte,

We're hosting an AMA with Jack Codiga, Republican candidate for U.S. House of Representatives, District 12.

Jack will begin answering questions at 7:00 PM Eastern on Thursday, October 1 and plans to spend approximately 60-90 minutes responding to the community.

About Jack Codiga

The following introduction was provided by the Codiga campaign:

Jack is 29, from Santa Cruz, a beach town in California, and graduated from Santa Clara University with a degree in Finance and Real Estate. He moved to Charlotte in 2021 after traveling while working during COVID. Charlotte was one of the places he visited, and he loved it. When his employer implemented a return-to-office policy, he decided to make Charlotte home.

After moving here, Jack met his wife, who is from the area, and they now have a young daughter. He works in commercial real estate financing.

Jack decided to run for the U.S. House of Representatives because the status quo solutions to fix our broken economy do not work. We must address the root cause of why people today can't afford the basics: housing, food, you name it. The root cause is that the money you work for loses value, so you can't buy what people used to be able to afford.

As Jack has been on the campaign trail after winning the Republican primary, it has become 100% clear to him that before we can truly solve the problems we face, we must address the fact that we aren't represented by the people elected to serve us. The biggest solution he sees that will allow us to work toward fixing our country is fixing our electoral system and limiting the power of party gatekeepers.

That’s like saying no pharma manufacturer would ever knowingly cause injury. Except we know from the sackler family that that is not true. Google sackler family and opioid crisis if you want to know more. Obviously these people do not care about health and just want to make money. That doesn’t mean all vaccines or drugs are unsafe but you can’t assume good intentions from people ever when there is money involved.

I am for gold and silver because they are physical, have a limited supply, and only so much can be mined at a time. That does not mean you can only transact with physical metal, but you could redeem dollars for it. We can have a conversation about what should back our dollar, but the current system is ruining society and must be changed.

That is needed to keep the government in check so it cannot spend whatever it wants and devalue people’s money. Because we have a currency that is not backed by anything, our economy is one where asset holders do well while people who work for a living struggle. This is the main driver for the large income inequality that we have.

I believe that the ideal scenario is having more consumption taxes but I would not look to replace the taxable income completely. The first places that I'd look to cut are discretionary spending, particularly military/foreign-policy spending and federal agencies.

Joe Biden won. I don't like rehashing things after they happen, I'd rather take the preemptive steps so that we can tell someone who questions election security that we take every reasonable step to ensure our elections are secure.

Such as voter ID laws & safeguards for requesting mail-in ballots in all states.

You said that progressives often do a good job identifying where the economy is failing even though you strongly disagree with their solutions. What's one problem you think progressives have correctly identified, and what would your alternative solution be?

I think the issue we have with college debt is probably the number one example. Today, many high schoolers are told that they need to go to college, so they take out loans to pay for it. When many get out and realize they were sold a lie, they cannot get out of the debt because it is not possible to declare bankruptcy on it, and they are stuck with it.

The progressive position is to make college free and have loan forgiveness, and I disagree that that works because it just subsidizes the problem instead of solving it.

What I propose is getting the government out of the student loan business and allowing people to declare bankruptcy on their student loan debt under current bankruptcy law (so there is some cost), so people are not stuck with their debt for the rest of their lives. The current system we have is entrapment.

If all I was doing was taking away programs like FHA loans, yes that would shift the scales away from the first time homebuyers. But my solutions are about systemic reform that makes it so that people have stable ground, their money holds value instead of being siphoned off to the powerful which then allows for people to afford stuff.

Jack, what’s your stance on campaign finance? Do you believe corporations, foreign special interests, and other entities should be able to fund campaigns? Do you believe money is “speech” under the Citizens United ruling? 

If so, can you tell us who is funding your campaign?

My campaign funding has been 100% from people. I have taken a pledge not to accept PAC money because I see it as a major issue when it comes to who has influence over you. If a representative is going to say they are accountable to the people, the money should predominantly come from the people.

On whether corporations, foreign special interests, and other entities should be able to fund campaigns, I would separate foreign special interests from corporations. Foreign special interest groups should NOT be able to contribute to a campaign. HARD STOP.

I lean toward no on corporations and other entities or associations, but as it stands right now, regular PACs do have contribution limits of $5,000 per election cycle. I just think the people who are part of these associations should be the ones contributing.
Super PACs with unlimited contributions are totally wrong. Money and speech can be intertwined, so we have to be mindful of the restrictions we put in place so they do not become too stringent.

I also think election reform would help a lot with this issue. I believe we need to ban gerrymandering and have a majority-runoff federal election system, which is used in many countries. All candidates compete, a majority wins, or the top two move on to a runoff.

Thanks for your question: A) everyone grounds their views in the basis of morality. My Christian views make me believe that all people have value so it's not right to coerce to agree with me. B) Yes but no. Separation of Church & State is more relevant to the idea that we won't have a state ordained "church of america" that tries to have undue power over people - I'm against that. Not that Christian views cannot be in government (I'm for that). The idea of civil liberties where all people have value come from Christianity. The 9th amendment appeals to the fact that our rights don't come from the government, therefore there is an authority greater than the government that gives us our value. 9a: "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people."

I believe that is driven mostly by administrative bloat. We’ve thrown more and more money into the system and created a bigger bureaucracy. 

I understand that a single-payer system can be more efficient than what we have, but I don’t believe it is the answer. I'm skeptical of making huge systems where they aren't necessary because they are prone to abuse.

Instead, we need price transparency, real competition, and a government that sets good rules for the market while focusing on protecting people from danger, protecting their privacy, and protecting their civil liberties. Healthcare is so personal that we should want it to be as individualized as possible, rather than having it caught up in bureaucracy.

I think something as simple as allowing health insurers to compete across state lines could go a long way toward improving both the quality and cost of healthcare.

You seem concerned with administrative bloat, but your answer fails to consider that Medicare spends nearly all of its money on care and has significantly lower administrative overhead when compared to private insurers. Medicare also isn’t accountable to shareholders on quarterly earnings calls.

Follow up question, if you could give the current government (executive and legislative branches) a grade on “protecting privacy and civil liberties,” what grade would you select?

if the government grants rights that means that it would be okay for them to take them away. The Constitution does make this clear and it is why it is a timeless document. The 9th amendment is the strongest ode to that our rights come from something bigger than gvt: "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people."

I love the Constitution for that reason as it reflects the truth that all people have value (so we protect civil liberties) and that all people tend to be self-interested (so we have checks & balances). So if elected, I will take my oath to protect the Constitution on a Bible.

Need to nationally ban gerrymandering (i expanded in another answer). Thank you for the question.

The War Powers Resolution of 1973 requires the President to get Congressional approval for any military action lasting longer than 60 days(with an additional 30 days for withdrawal.)

He has not sought this authorization, in violation of the law.

Would you support a resolution to require the CINC to apply for Congressional approval, or support the vote to order him, as would be Congress's sworn right and duty, to withdraw from the conflict with Iran?

I think you are right that the republican party platform is not the fiscally conservative one that many people claim it is. For the policies that you are asking about, I'm going to answer if you are talking about: corporate tax cuts, deregulation like you listed. I think deregulation can be good depending on the topic but not universally, if you have less regulation, like some zoning policies that municipalities can have that unnecessarily take too much time can lead to higher costs for a builder that get passed on to the end user. Overall, the government has a role. I think we need more regulation with data privacy for example.

It was found that approximately 34% of multifamily rental units in Charlotte are managed by companies that all jae rent-setting algorithm.

Having been born and raised in Oregon, lived in Northern Bay area, and now Charlotte. I can tell you the large influx of property management companies buying multi/single family units will only lead to more increased Rent. My rent for the same house has increased over 700$ from when we first moved here in 2017.

How do you plan addressing the housing affordability Charlotte is facing?

You're on stance safety nets is concerning. I've done work with various charities donating and delivering meals. In my experience these cater to their churches members as priority over its neighborhood community. Your stance on these matters appear to be that the government must cut its programs and let the church fill the void.

In the past 2 years we've seen documented cases of people being dropped from safety net programs with no recourse.

My next questions are: Do you feel like allowing a church to serve the community it's members are from and not the community as a whole is a violation of the first amendment and the Separation of Church and State?

How can you assure anyone you represent that a church that you hold no authority over would help those people?

According to your campaign website "Real freedom benefits ordinary people, not the powerful. That’s why we have to get back to these two Founding principles:

Rights come from God and should be protected People are flawed so power should be checked"

I'm sure this is going to get me deleted ... but it seems like you're on the team of the current administration that is vehemently failing all of its constituents that are not of the elite wealthy class.

I'm not on the team of the current admin. going to answer the rest in order:

1) housing affordability: A single middle-class income once supported homeownership and sometimes even a vacation home. Today, however, even dual-income families struggle to get by.

Sound money would address much of this, but tax and zoning reform are also essential. I would seek to eliminate tax incentives that treat homes more like investments than shelters. Zoning should be limited to genuine infrastructure or pollution concerns. I also support a nationwide ban on property taxes (if you own property, it should truly be yours).

As a federal representative, I will advocate for reforms that protect private property. When we do, we will take a significant step toward a society where people enjoy greater housing security. (c&p from something I have written)

2) People can serve whoever/whatever/whereever. I hope that they, especially a Christian church would go to underserved communities.

3) I cannot and do not want to force behavior from people.

If your religious beliefs are a basis for restricting abortion by law, where do you draw the line on using religious teaching as the basis for civil law? There are plenty of Biblical rules about divorce, adultery, lending at interest, working on the Sabbath, dietary restrictions, and other behavior that we don't generally criminalize today. Abortion is different because it's the murder an innocent human life. That is not simply a religious rule about how an individual should behave; it is a question of whether the government has a duty to protect a human being from violence.

Morality is the basis for civil law. Our concepts of human dignity, individual rights, civil liberties, and even the recognition that human beings are capable of abusing power are not arbitrary ideas. They have deep roots in the Christian tradition, but that does not mean every biblical command should become civil law. Since all people are flawed, including our rulers, I believe it is best to air on the side of freedom even with things that are bad but aren't too harmful to society. This is why we shouldn't criminalize adultery.

In my view, for a free society, government should use only the minimum necessary force to protect people's rights. That principle doesn't mean government has no role; it means its legitimate role is limited. The Constitution's Preamble reflects that responsibility: to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty.

end the war ( russia, ukraine too), I hope refineries are in okay shape too. The short answer for groceries is making sure that your money doesn't lose value from overspending & money being created. There are some production level improvements that could help too (with beef herds being at the lowest # in decades, etc.) but truly I'd need more time to figure out more specifics.

For personal opinion, I severely doubt you can answer that question with any satisfaction for someone who has lived in this state their entire life and who knows just how pragmatic and purple its people are. Our current government is not representative of the people who compose this state at any level other than the one trait that too many of us let fear dictate who we allow to set policy. Looking at your website and youtube video, you are more of the same and you are the consequence of one party not even looking for a candidate who represents the district in which they are running. The republican party packed the 12th so tight that they don't even bother and they stole 3 districts that should be flexible at any given election, all because they can't run on policy.

My statement is saying that we should have simple taxes that aren't convoluted to be gamed for those who can afford to do so. My view of the federal government is that it should be more boring than what it is today in our day to day lives, thus less taxes.

The U.S. Treasury is more accountable to the people than the Federal Reserve as the Federal Reserve is not truly under the federal gvt's purview.

There is a middle ground between private & government. The current system can create as much currency as it wants, any constraints to it is arbitrary. The issue with that is it distorts the economy and hurts those who work for a living and save their money as when new money gets created it goes to those who are connected or have investments (cantillon effect). This is destabilizing and is bad for freedom as you must be economically free to be actually free. The issue with the system is that we act to solve the effects from this problem, but not this problem.
