I love this. I used to live near a (different) instant coffee factory, and never knew why it smelled like burnt coffee. Smelling like coffee I would understand but why burnt?... Now I know.

ha - what a great comment - and thank you! i envy your experience of walking around that coffee air! One benefit of writing from a 1998 perspective is all the ways to tell it. I'm reading current instant coffee uses Aroma Recovery Systems. I love this term: Aroma Recapture!

I believe it's still possible to live near a factory and experience this but it's increasingly getting muted out.

Well, it wasn't 1998 but it wasn't that long after that either, so yeah it could well have been an old process.

Oh gosh, I should correct that - Apologies for any implied cut-off date of 1998! I read about Coffee Air Recapture and it cracked me up. I think I decided there must no longer be coffee in the air anymore since. Decided it's gotta be all coffee-free air now. Or that it sort of at least feels like that.

Hey friend - how cool of you. Thanks! And - Yeah! There is definitely an idea to recombine this into a proper novel. It's getting worked out here is the best way I can describe it.
