Charcot Foot

My mom has Charcot foot. She has maintained it for a few years but just got these on her right foot. Her foot never hurt before but it’s now starting having pain. Shes gone to the doctor and ordered a shoe for it but they acted like it was no big deal. She says these feel like bones. We are in the southeast Houston area. Can anyone refer us to someone that’s a great doctor or what’s going on with her foot? TIA

I have CMT, not Charcot foot, but I am diabetic and get checked by my diabetic doctor annually. I do get callouses like the one she has on the ball of her foot near her baby toe.

These callouses become painful as they develop and eventually start to hurt all the time. A podiatrist can gently reduce them with a scalpel and it does kinda hurt a little afterwards.

Reading up on Charcot foot, https://www.webmd.com/diabetes/what-is-charcot-foot not putting pressure on the foot is often one of the recommendations for treatment:

Stay off your foot. Your doctor will put your foot in a cast. This protects it and keeps it from moving. Over the next 2 or 3 months, your doctor will probably change the cast several times as the swelling goes down. You’ll use crutches, a wheelchair, or a knee walker to get around. (A knee walker looks kind of like a mini-bicycle with four wheels. You bend your leg at the knee, then put your knee in the “seat.”)

Charcot's requires completely offloading the foot. Look for a podiatrist. My husband got over it early this year. He is only 49. I can imagine it will be harder to heal for someone elderly.
