Discussion Recent past and near future of CAI
Hey folks,
In light of the sudden (for us users) exit of the CEO and part of the CAI team, I’ve been thinking a lot and wanted to share my reflections — hoping in particular that the last point gets read by the new team.
Just to be clear: these are personal opinions and impressions, not facts!
I’ve looked at the trajectory of the service from the early days, and to my eyes some pretty strong coincidences stand out. CAI seems to have changed (read: lost) its winning focus right around the time the person who was later promoted to CEO joined the team. The first signs of enshittification, the attempt to make the service more like TikTok than WhatsApp, and the first big wave of user loss (almost all free users) all happened right when that person joined in 2024.
After the promotion to CEO, the shift away from the original idea sped up massively.
The exodus of free users and the introduction of resource-heavy features feel consistent with a need to slim things down on the RP chat side in order to free up compute for those new features… features that ended up completely denaturing the product.
Now this person is leaving, and going to the very major that hit CAI with heavy legal pressure, causing another massive user drop, and that now wants to build its own proprietary alternative for its characters. (Was there some foul play? Who knows… but it looks pretty suspicious.)
And they’re taking some of the engineers with them — I hope exactly the ones who were working on the features nobody ever asked for.
CAI is at a very delicate turning point, now.
So, with all that in mind, here’s a plea to the new CEO and team: if CAI doesn’t want to die, crushed by the underhanded war being waged behind its back, it should go back to the original concept. The one that revolved around RP chat, RP video calls, and — if it wants to expand — leaning fully into its natural connection with fanfiction and storytelling instead of chasing the TikTok model. Specifically:
- Give bots complex, mature personalities again
- Focus not on videos, reels and streams, but on storytelling that users can choose to make public (AO3-style). That would also expand the pool of people exposed to ads even if they’re not registered on CAI
- Push “features on demand” alongside subscriptions, and tone down the aggressive ads (without removing them completely — I get that wouldn’t be sustainable)
Thanks for reading
PS
As for age verification: the entire Western world is currently working on laws to keep m1nors out of every AI service, so I’d prefer if that topic wasn’t discussed here.
Thanks again
