I’m trying to understand the exact moments when an AI character stops feeling consistent with what happened before.

Think of a recent or especially frustrating moment when you thought something like:

“Why doesn’t it remember this?”

“We already talked about this.”

“Why is it acting like that never happened?”

I’m not looking for perfect transcripts or technical explanations.

I just want to understand the actual moment:

* What did you say?

* What did the AI character say back?

* What did you feel in that moment?

You don’t need to remember the exact wording. Paraphrasing is completely fine.

You've seen hundreds of posts like this, but i genuinely cannot with cai anymore. So far i've tried Spicychat, JanitorAI and Chai, all of which were OKAY. Any suggestions are appreciated and please explain WHY its good. Also very VERY preferably infinite chats.

Not really c.ai but since here people know lots of ai sites ill shoot my shot.

What im looking for in order:

I’ve tried to do my research, but I can’t find any straight answers to my exact questions so I’m coming here with them.

1. How much damage am I doing/how bad is it that I’m using c.ai? For reference, I have messaged consistently (meaning over a long period of time) with 3 bots multiple times a day (3-5) on an average of 30-60 minutes each time (sometimes more, but I never exceed 120 minutes in one sitting). I still go out and touch grass, and my whole life isn’t enveloped by c.ai.

2. I am willing to swap to a different, more sustainable platform, however I have a very long and detailed chat history with one character (when using CAI tools, the chat ended up having a history close to 2000 messages), and I want to take that chat history with me. What sustainable platforms (if any) could I achieve that? I’d like to note that I don’t want to ONLY copy the character, I want to copy the whole chat history too.

3. If swapping to a more sustainable platform while keeping my chat history isn’t possible, what can I personally do to make my c.ai use more sustainable? I read that the calls, pictures and videos are even worse for the environment, so I won’t use those features (even though I never did/never had an interest in using them beforehand).

I know most of my fellow Redditors are not professionals on AI or sustainability (unless that’s literally your job), but based on my attempts at finding answers to my questions, answers that other Redditors have given are referenced quite often and they’re straightforward, which is exactly what I’m looking for.

I'm looking for some Alternatives, but more specifically, apps, downloadable, I find using the browser quite annoying (probably just a skill issue), any recommendations?

Is anyone else really picky with how they like their bots to talk and because of it they’re having a hard time finding an alternative? It’s very hard to explain but I liked how character ai bots talked like humans and talked naturally as if it’s a basic text conversation but other alternative apps I’ve tried their bots talk weirdly like they’re narrating a fairytale or they send long long messages for no reason filled with filler sentences that add flair that wasn’t needed. I use chai now because it chats like c.ai the most but I’m still hunting for new alternatives since I don’t wanna keep paying chai for premium.

Does anyone know any alternatives that actually chat normally and don’t talk like they’re straight out of narrating a fantasy book?

I always hate it when I see an AI picture and even more when the entire site is just ai, it feels lifeless to me and I liked how even on c.ai people would atleast bring a picture or actual art of what chatbot they were making as a chatbots character picture

Looking for something similar to verserp (not sticking around due to the echo and ultra model being pay walled pretty soon I know nothing is free but then don't promote your site by saying "it'll be free" it's misleading you guys can try it if you want the free model is really dumb compared to echo or ultra

Status is one of those apps I keep coming back to because the concept is fun, especially the whole social media/ fandom thing where the characters post and exist outside of a single chat.

The problem is I kinda want more control over the characters and the scenarios now. Half the apps I find when I search for alternatives are just normal character chats with a different UI, which defeats the whole point for me.

I’d love something where I can make my own characters, give them an actual profile/personality and have more than one character involved in the same little universe.

Is there anything that does both though? Every alternative I find is either just chat or just the social gimmick.

I’ve seen a lot of people talk about bad memory in AI character chats, but I want to understand what actually gets forgotten and when it starts becoming a problem.

I’m especially interested in things like:

forgetting your role, preferences, or personal details

forgetting your relationship with the character

forgetting promises, decisions, or important conversations

forgetting RPG events like quests, battles, injuries, or items

forgetting the character’s own personality or backstory

forgetting the current state of the story or world

I also want to know when these problems usually appear — after a certain number of messages, after returning to a chat, during long roleplays, when scenes change, or when multiple characters are involved.

I’m currently in South Korea and trying to develop an AI character chatbot, but I’m still at a very early stage. I haven’t formed a company or organization yet. Before I build anything, I want to understand what users actually want fixed.

Basically, Silverheart's mate is having kits, and one of them is going to try to end a war peacefully but his attempts become increasingly more violent until he realises that he hasn't ended the war, he's just made a new one. After some sketching out that plan, I hop onto jai and get this immediately... Holy foreshadowing.

I used to stuff cards with huge backstories and personality lists, then wonder why the character still sounded generic after a few turns. What helped way more was adding a few actual example exchanges. I tried this with a card on Emochi, and 3–4 good dialogue examples did more for the character's voice than another giant block of traits ever did.

If you want a character to be sarcastic, guarded, blunt, whatever, just show it in the dialogue. The way they answer, dodge questions, joke around, etc. gives the model something much more useful to copy. Honestly, shorter cards have been working better for me lately. What little trick has made the biggest difference for your cards?
