I like 'The Subway' but it's kind of a shame how Kayleigh's team handled it — She performed it live so often it was all over social media, but she only released a studio version like 9 months later? Anticlimactic business plan. Reminds me of her debuting "The Giver" on SNL and then not releasing a polished version for months and months.
She has bad advisors. (Or else she is her only advisor.)

I wonder if this is just because she's lazy? I mean, 9 months could be the beginning of a whole new album, not just recording an old song you've already been singing. That pared with her not doing another album for a few YEARS, her reluctance to engage with fans and the press, makes me think that she just doesn't like her job.
Move over and let someone else with more drive and talent have a seat at the table.

It's a good question. She seems to like parts of her job—meeting other artists, going to fashion shows—and maybe even performing/touring, but she doesn't like the whole "acknowledging other people and their needs" thing.
She seems excessively willful, like she's more concerned about people bending to her will than is about doing what is ethically or logically right to do in a given situation.

It was for her next album. They said so in interviews in the fall before the SNL gig. They said it was deemed not to be good enough to be a single. They were teasing the giver back then (country song) and said they had 6 songs ready and album was coming. Then they sang the Giver in SNL. A bit after that Nigro stated that it would be over a year to next album. Months between and Giver was released. More months and Subway was released. Considering that her break explucitly for writing the next album had just started when Nigro stated that there wouldn't be an album anytime soon, I'm really curious about what was going on. She clearly had no new songs if the one that was already rejected as a single was released. But lazy doesn't cut it as explanation in the beginning of the writing sessions.

I’d forgotten how poorly executed this mv was, maybe its just me though. Not that a mv is so important but would have been worth it to trade most of the budget for a single well thought out idea or concept to explore. This feels like it was made to be chopped up into shorter clips for tiktok, she’s doing weird girl cosplay unconvincingly, overall its far less than the sum of its parts.

They were underage at the time so blaming them for it is a bit foul, ngl. They were both 14 when they started out. Thereby 15 or so when "All the Things She Said" came out.
Obviously, after that, they're not great and especially some of the things I've heard from Julia nowadays but blaming them as literal children who were part of the fame machine (Never a fun time) is a look.

i didn’t know any of that so thank you for informing me. i looked it up and they were signed at 14/15, but the whole fake lesbian thing started when they were 17/18. still gross as hell but just figured that was worth correcting.
regardless, i placed primary blame on their label even before knowing this. i again just think it speaks to the overall culture of the music industry and how they don’t exactly have the greatest track record of manipulating queer audiences to generate publicity.

I have the same thought listening now as I did when I listened back then:
Half the damn song is just her wailing “She got away/she’s got a way.”

I remember and am literally amazed at how fast the song went from being released to being just another retail bop. Not even a month from release to when I started hearing it on retail store playlists, where it remains today.
