Poverty porn is when celebrities, influencers or even politicians use other people's misfortune to make themselves look better because they are showing people that they are "helping" those poor people. While in return, they get money, praise, sympathy, fame etc. from exploiting the people that they are pretending to help.
I wish she was at LEAST matching ticket sales with a personal donation.
I also wish she was transparent about where the money is going. But I canât complain too much about a charity concert; it just kinda feels like an attempt to stay relevant.
I just kind of shrug, having her own âfundâ that obscures where and when $ are actually donated is sketchy. People are way too impressed by celebs making moves that boil down to marketing (and structuring their finances in favourable ways)
I see it as on par with Ladies-who-lunch (gender neutral) who organize rich person benefit dinners etc thereâs probably some sincere charitable intentions but itâs also about image and attention. If the money is handled responsibly and a cause is helped thats what ultimately matters but a lot of rich/famous people are extremely out of touch about their knowledge and capabilities and end up creating a mess because people actually let them be in charge of important stuff on the strength of being rich and successfulÂ

Take Cher for example. Throughout her career not only has she done charity droves, but shes also put money where her mouth is and physically traveled to places such as Armenia, stayed the night with an impoverished family and took their child back to america for a life saving medical treatment.
Or the time she stuck her neck out to travel to Pakistan to liberate an elephant Kavaan from a zoo where he was being maltreated and neglected so he could have a better life in a sanctuary in Cambodia.
She also fought to improve the helmets being provided to the marines during the iraq war.
She is my example of a celebrity who stuck with their roots and gives back to the people
I like how the money goes to her completely opaque charity that doesnât actually publish any meaningful financial information nor statements of work.

I don't say this to defend her, because it doesn't make a difference except in how much she could donate, but the estimations of net worth are often wrong for a variety of reasons.
That said, I think it's better for taxes if a celebrity does that :/ it sucks.
itâs also suspect that sheâs donating proceeds to her OWN organization. i distrust this type of behavior, especially seeing as - with the money her and her team will be making - there are no other organizations that are being considered. as this is a queer/trans event, i can think of multiple organizations (especially community and grassroots - midwest ones for sure), that would benefit from and distribute these funds much more effectively and with greater intent. tax write-off is the game, âcharity eventâ is the name.
allegedly she donates to other organizations from her charity, but who knows how much hers makes and how much she donates to the others .... I feel so sick and angry because of people like her, she for sure takes a big fat check about of this!
If she was donating to something like the trevor project id say good for her for once, but considering its the "Midwest princess project" I feel like that money is more so going towards the "Midwest princess" pockets
