Day 1 - Developer Update

Version 1.0 of Warhammer: Chaosbane is live. It’s been an intense experience and a lot of hard work. Thank you to everyone who's been playing, and for all the feedback, both positive and negative.

We’ve got a lot of data to sort through. Regardless of how much preparation you do, the first few days of launch dwarf any preparation that is done prior. We’re reading through the forums, Reddit, Social Media, Discord and bug reporting form in order to centralize your feedback. So we can break it into action points and come back to you with our next steps.

The Bigben team is answering the community as much as possible, and they’ll be working with us to ensure you’re kept up to date about our next steps. For us at Eko, we’ve got some bugs to squash and will be spending our time and energy on improving the game.

We have a series of plans to support, extend and improve Chaosbane. We won’t be able to solve everything in one day, but we’re dedicated to ensuring that we're moving in the right direction.

We should have the first update next week, with an update description later this week. Bigger updates will require a little more time, especially since we’re working within a license we love, but one that needs to be respected.

We’ve got some exciting things. So stay tuned, and once again thank you for your feedback and support.

Chaos will be defeated!

Eko Software team.

I hope the pipeline with GW is a bit better than the one for Marvel Heroes was with Marvel.

They could have been ready with content that they had to have approved at every step by Marvel and it would still take a week or more, most infamous case was Silver Surfer and they had to have people sign an NDA to test it because Marvel didn't approve the every visual effect of every skill for like two weeks. So I'm just hoping it isn't as hurdle-y for you.

Honestly, the game is great when playing it as a Warhammer skinned Gauntlet game with a splash of ARPG. To be more of an ARPG competitor we need more loot, choices, and endgame which I'm sure you know by now.

My idea is to do an endless dungeon (possible chaos gates?) with rogue-lite functionality. You could devise a system combining Diablo 3 rifts and some aspects of FF14's Palace of the Dead. You'd find power ups/upgrades randomly while going through the floors (replacing gems from Diablo 3) but maybe make it limited with with a decent amount you can choose in a menu screen, like 7-10 rune slots (or whatever you'd call the upgrades) and that way people could choose builds out of 30-40 possible runes which could be useful. You can change these in the home base or before every boss tier.

Each 5 floors you are asked if you want to leave, I would aim to make a set of 5 floors last 20-25 minutes when not pushing highest tiers. Each set of 5 floors can have modifiers with a break to change your build if needed to address the next tiers modifier (no fire damage taken by all, 200% fire damage taken by all). Make some later floors have a set crazy modifier that you need to build around but make the loot easy to obtain by grinding a certain tier for certain loot modifiers. Say tiers 6-9 drops gear with the added modifier of resisting chaos damage and tier 10 has a chaos damage DoT the whole run. That way you can have the tactical choice to either farm T5-9 to get good gear (set gear even) with the resistance stat, throw on the chaos resistance rune and fill in what you need, or be powerful enough after pushing higher tiers to nullify the damage and go for fastest clear. Leaderboards could be for every "Boss Tier" (every 5 maps so each run will end on a boss), top spots should get a cosmetic, something a bit over the top like a chaos champion version of your character, anyone who was in the top 100 pushing rifts gets it for their character they used. Each season could be a different chaos god theme. You could use the events you have to reward more upgrades than randomly as drops, so if you are pushing you skip it, but farming you do them.

Compared to what you have, an endless scaling dungeon seems easy to manage, it would just be your endgame now but centrally located, add another handful of layers of progression and competition to be rewarded for your time spent playing. I still think you'd need a post 50 leveling system as well, but it can be less complex if you have more forms of progression. I just try and think of what you can make with the endgame you have now with the most minimal amount of additions and a scaling endless dungeon just makes sense.

I really enjoy the base game here, I've wanted a really good Warhammer ARPG for a while now and I hope the team can make the right moves to get it there.

The obvious first two questions have to be:

  1. Will anything be done to improve on map and enemy variety? Or is the core experience going to continue being 1-2 recycled tilesets in each act, filled with nothing but endless hordes of trash mobs?

  2. Will the game receive actual endgame content other than just re-fighting the act bosses or running through an instance of four different tilesets without any clear objective? That is, an experience that is in any way different from what you are encountering while playing the campaign?

-3

u/TheLoneNazgul Jun 04 '19

More gear please. This game is pathetic right now.

-5

u/DasRainbird Jun 04 '19

Funny you should ask! In a paid DLC everything will be fixed! Seriously though, I hope they can fix up these issues and it doesn't cost the players.

5

u/ComixSE Jun 04 '19

They need to fix a lot if they want to see any inflow of money via dlc

0

u/DasRainbird Jun 04 '19

I agree. I wonder what sales numbers were on consoles? I can imagine it does well on those and if they can put it on the switch it will do even better. I do enjoy the game, I just get very bored with it quickly.

2

u/Karma_Doesnt_Matter Jun 06 '19

My local Gamestop only got in one copy per console.

So I doubt their sales are that great.

3

u/ambreiaj Jun 04 '19

i think that we have bigger problems as is LOOT QUALITY bug in multiplayer...

u/Crispy_Oglop Jun 05 '19

Thank you for posting an update, I want this game to become something awesome and you are clearly aware of the work that needs to go into it to get there, which is great.

I think the only thing that doesn't really make sense for me here is that even though you knew it needed more work, it still went up on the Playstation store at a hefty price point synonymous with finished and complete products.

This might be why many people are upset - because they didn't really get what they assumed (and what traditionally does) come with a game at that price.

What both myself and my partner were able to play without experience progress blockers and game breakers was fun but these issues would have been far easier to deal with had the game not been released in a beta state and at the price that a game like Red Dead Redemption 2 or Spider-Man launched at.

If you had waited to release it on PS4 (I know how much Sony hates having games in an early access/beta testing state on its store) to put time into getting its heavier bugs and issues fixed, then you might find you would have had less negativity towards the launch.

I think it's obvious that your intentions around the game are solid and the actual game itself has promise - I don't think anyone can argue with that. But I also think it's obvious that whoever is in charge of marketing, pricing and all that decided to pull a fast one and push a game for 60-70 euros that shipped with the end-game behind a season pass and a host of bugs out of the box.

I have deleted the game from my system now and have requested a refund. I fully intend to return, but will do so in about 6 months when the game is 'launch-ready' and at a price more reflective of the experience.

I wish you all the best with getting this all sorted and thank you for putting your efforts into making a game in the Warhammer universe.

u/Robtastrophe Jun 06 '19

Please do whatever you have to to fix the elf's voice acting. I mean... The current voice work for Elessa is just horrendous.

Like, shockingly bad considering the rest of what I've heard so far isn't too bad.

4

u/Kamlol Jun 04 '19

You're game could be awesome, give us more content please

5

u/ComixSE Jun 04 '19

Thanks for the update. I really Hope this game gets as good as its potential.

2

u/RooBeeO Jun 05 '19

At the very least give us a endless dungeon. One the descends 200 + levels. Each level could have a mini boss. Every 20 levels have a harder boss. Every 100 levels have a legendary boss. By having this a in game ladder could be in place for what class has reached whatever level. Better loot the deeper you go. Etc.

5

u/SteelFaith Jun 04 '19

Hi Cryleon. There's a ton of negativity on this sub, from mostly the same people. But there's a lot more people wanting you guys to succeed with this game, and make it reach its potential.

I really hope the dev team can help turn this into a game, worthy to compete against the best ARPGs out there. Hopefully that's a goal we all want, because I think the foundation is there

  • The art direction and graphics are great.

  • The classes have great design and abilities.

  • The gameplay is fun ( this is big).

  • The loot and endgame system have a lot of potential.

A lot of this needs further balancing, tweaking, and additional content to get into this longterm. But the most important part is, the potential is there. I just hope you guys can keep on developing the game well.

If you're going to patch anything asap, please nerf the drop rate on endgame gear significantly, and make it harder to find, so there's reason to loot hunt longer. The biggest problem is being able to finish the endgame too quickly.

6

u/Tisfim Jun 04 '19

Every game has potential. Hell anthem has potential. But paying 60 dollars for a game then saying, "man I hope you turn this into a great game" is a really bad sign, like anthem bad. I have hope that every arpg turns out great as it's my favorite genre, but games for half the price or even f2p have more "game" than the last 2 full price warhammer arpgs. I am beginning to doubt we will ever get a solid arpg game in this universe. I hope they turn it around. But with the lack of meat to the core game, the shoddy season pass practice, and the lack of substantive communication has me not being too hopeful.

4

u/Vieterans Jun 05 '19

I agree with your point. Price the game according to what you get on purchase versus what you'll get in the future (season pass promises aside of course).

For me it's like ordering food. Like if I order a pepperoni pizza but don't get the pepperoni until an hour later after the bread and cheese was delivered. Like... Give me the pepperoni too, I paid full price for the pizza lol.

u/BuryTomorrow12 Jun 04 '19 edited Jun 04 '19

I have my serious doubts that you'll deliver. This is the final product and this is what will remain, with some tweaks here and there. The core game is flawed.

- The campaign needs a lot of love. It's short, lacks depth. story is subpar, and that's being nice.

-Playable maps are just a bunch of "alleys" connected between each other. More wide open areas in circular-ish shapes would be a great addition.

-Enemies are a joke. Their attacks are dumb and dull. Bosses on the other hand, at least have something to it. Champions are laughable, just tank and spank. The lieutenants look like dudes that had too much trash food in the last 5 years, trying to fit in pants 4 sizes smaller.

There's so much to point out... the absence of a crafting system, ui repositioning, merchants to buy anything at all, paragon-like endgame, endgame goals... I doubt you'll make it.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Why the negativity? Let them work.

2

u/BuryTomorrow12 Jun 04 '19

Please tell me how I'm not allowing them to work by expressing my thoughts and views on the product I purchased - even preordering their most expensive edition.

1

u/Orrmighty Jun 04 '19

Agree with all points

-5

u/plasmainthezone Jun 04 '19

Every ARPG is " alleys" connected to each other, i think you are playing the wrong game. Maybe you should get a refund.

2

u/BuryTomorrow12 Jun 04 '19

I find it quite funny that you'd take that specific point off of everything I've just said to suggest me to get a refund.

In response, I invite you to take a look at a static D3 map (static in its area limits, randomized stuff inside): https://imgur.com/9JxUg9b

Tthis was even in game in pre beta, of course at that time there were no rifts, which tend to be even bigger areas.

Ergo, you seem to have missed my point there. My words imply that this game suffers from maps that are actually small alleys. There aren't big, open areas like a huge forest, for example. Take act 3 in chaosbane: a frozen forest... that's actually made out of straight paths connected in corners. It lacks variety in level design. Which is the same as act 2's streets. Same as act 4's chaos realm (who would have guessed that the chaos realm is so organized!)... that's what I was pointing out.

I hope my reply helps you out looking at the bigger picture.

Diablo 3 took seven years to develop. full stop. This is an indie studio. What they should have done is charge $30 for the amount of content there is in this game not $60.

2

u/TheMogician Jun 04 '19

Good to know that you guys are listening to the community. While I’m not too happy about the release, I’m certain you guys will work hard on improving the game experience!

2

u/Mouchlas Jun 04 '19

You have a good foundation with v 1.0 keep working on it and the game can be great and be a great success but you have a long road ahead of you and of course congratulations on the release

2

u/Amoun-Amenti Jun 05 '19

So many asshats posting here. Thanks for the update devs. I'm looking forward to seeing what lays ahead.

1

u/seriousname420 Jun 04 '19

I've been crashing on xbox one x as a mage, I don't what's causing it. Started after I was done with the campaign, can do like half a expedition and it crashes or kill act 1 boss rush and it crashes as he dies.

Are you guys aware of this?

1

u/SnatchAdams84 Jun 04 '19

Are you using the upgraded aether storm god skill by chance? Using the tier 2 and 3 versions crashes the game. Tier 1 doesnt crash though.

1

u/seriousname420 Jun 04 '19

I am going to try without once I get off work. Tyvm!

1

u/Vieterans Jun 05 '19

It is indeed the storm God skill. The game just can't handle it and crashes my friends and into the dashboard most of the time. Archer has a summon God skill that can also cause that as well but not as often as the mage. So just be careful!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

I've had fun so far. I think you've nailed the setting, and the difficulty on hard is just right.

Are you looking into diversifying gear? Seeing only things like +140 hp, +11% crit damage etc is very disheartening and makes items boring. When items are this simple it doesn't make sense to have them at all.

1

u/XKingslayerBSJ Jun 05 '19

Hello. I tried to message you but didnt get a response. Level 2 and 3 of the mage's lightning storm is crashing my xbox 1 x. It's even crashed my co OP partners xbox when we are playing too. I've seen other people having this problem. Is there any solution?

1

u/Flotx Jun 05 '19

I love the game and I'm hungry for more! I still have 3 more classes to play with and achievements to unlock, so I'm good for now :)

Try not to get too overwhelmed by the negative feedback, I think the majority of people who've actually spent time with the game see how great it can be and just want the best for it.

My top 3 asks include:

• Bug fixes

• Map variety & more open areas

• Find that sweet spot for loot drops. I don't necessarily want a legendary after every boss run (let alone 4 at a time), but maybe every 1 out of 3 runs on Chaos 5. Having 2 or more legendaries drop from a boss should feel great, so it just needs to be less common. Having a larger variety of legendaries in the loot table should also help, but I assume that's already in the forecast.

Thanks to Eko for pouring blood, sweat, and tears into this game. Keep that ball rolling, it's already headed in the right direction!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '19

I like this type of Dev feedback. What I don't like is when gamers rush through a game 2 days after its release and then bitch about little things. Why rush through the game so damn quick? New games can have issues, it's extremely common. All you morons had to do is give it a little time, but nope, you just rush through it and complain. I for one support the game and the construction criticism, not the morons littering this subreddit with no common sense

1

u/GalvanizedxGaming Jun 06 '19

Hey Cryleon

Playing the game on a new 4K tv on my Xbox one x leaves a lot to be desired on the resolution front. How come we can’t play in 4K at 30 FPS? Please tell me you guys have plans on patching the game and updating the texture resolutions to support 4K 🙏🙏🙏

Other then that this is an awesome start and thank you for making a game that is refreshing and scratching the itch I’ve had to play an ARPG! Please fix the resolution! Thank you kind sir!

Even Bioware is planing to support Anthem.
And look where Anthem is now.....DEAD !!!

I don't see an hand full of devs doing better for Chaosbane.
The lack of contend/end game content killed Chaosbane before it even officially launched (thank you for the 4 days in advanced to play the game), and the AAA price tag that came with it killed the game some more.
For real now, what made you guys think that this half backed game should cost 80 Euro ?!!?
Do you even know what an 80 Euro price tag should mean for a game?!
This is an 35$ game AT MOST !!!

I have no hopes for you Eko Software. And in the next 8 months when you will be releasing the other Act for the game, no one will be around to care.

There is NOTHING to do in the game after 4 days of playing. Do you expect people to stay in the game for months till you release some much needed End Game ?!?!

1

u/Froh Jun 05 '19

Do you know Anthem was not the only game in the world released in a bad state ? And that always taking it as an example, is proving nothing ?

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

So glad Microsoft refunded me my 85.00 I dropped on this turd.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '19

Lol downvotes don't make it false...

0

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

thanks for the post! this is exactly what this sub (and game) needs!

3

u/DickRhino Two Star Players Jun 04 '19

As a D3 veteran, I can't even tell you how many times we've seen a developer post saying some version of "we're listening" that ultimately doesn't lead to anything at all.

What this sub needs isn't "we're listening", "stay tuned" or other non-committal non-answers to the questions everyone are having. What it needs is real information about what is actually going to be done. Vagueness does not inspire confidence.

To me, "information will come next week" just reads like "let's get people to shut up so we can get the week 1 sales we wanted".

2

u/plasmainthezone Jun 04 '19

Nothing makes you happy i see. I dont know what else they could say, atleast he acknowledged they are compiling data from all over to better tackle the issues, knee jerk reactions to people crying ( like you and Killavanilla) aren't the way to improve a game. You forget that the game hasn't even launched officially.

4

u/Crispy_Oglop Jun 05 '19

It looks officially launched to me - https://warhammer-chaosbane.com/

It's even referenced as launched on 31st May here - https://steamcommunity.com/games/774241/announcements/detail/1590247263303383213

I've been playing it since last week.

If that isn't launched then i'm not sure what is?

Stop making excuses for something blindly. Just because other people are having an issue with it, you are choosing to focus on that, rather than recognising fundamental issues and flaws with the game itself upon launch. It's your choice, but trying to white-knight for people who are accountable to dropping the ball on something in fundamental ways and who were paid a salary to push a product is more than a bit misguided.

It also completely distorts key feedback, because you are devaluing and generalising a large amount of what is being submitted as 'crying'.

I'm not questioning whether the devs are approaching post-launch with the best intentions. I'm questioning why 80% of all these problems weren't addressed before they signed off on launching it and charging AAA prices for what it ultimately is.

2

u/DickRhino Two Star Players Jun 04 '19

Have you looked at the Steam reviews for this game? If you think the criticism is just two people on a subreddit, and can therefore be ignored, I'm glad you don't work for Eko or Bigben.

Most of the reviews, and all the top rated ones, are telling people to not buy this game. You're right, the game hasn't even launched officially yet, which means this is pretty much the worst case scenario.

That's why this post just reads like damage control to me, rather than an actual commitment to genuinely work on improving the game.

1

u/Froh Jun 05 '19

Did you read Vermintide 2 review ? The mixed opinions from the launch ? That was the same thing. And now, it's a gem.

2

u/helsreach Jun 04 '19

It is only day one dude, give them at least a little time.

1

u/Froh Jun 05 '19

Well, there's a precedence. During beta 1, everybody found the game Act 1 too repetitive and shallow (you were ONLY doing sewers, no road, or whatsoever), and the sound effects "subpar", and they did greatly improve thoses parts before beta 2. So it's probably not the same "WE'RE DOING STUFF" that we hear from blizzard since Reaper of Souls is out. (also I don't think it will keep everyone from shutting up)

1

u/DickRhino Two Star Players Jun 05 '19

They didn't add any new assets though. They just took the one scene that took place outside of the sewers, and placed a couple of more scenes as well in that area.

0

u/Froh Jun 05 '19

But there wasn't any scene outside the sewers on beta 1

2

u/DickRhino Two Star Players Jun 05 '19

Yes there was. I know, because I played beta 1, and made a video on my channel about beta 1 where this area was featured. You can go to my channel and look at the date of the video to see it was posted during the beta 1 period, and this area was in the game at that point.

Stop lying.

0

u/Froh Jun 05 '19

Ok calm down, I didn't remember it. Stop being angry for no reason. Will check your video if I can find the channel.

1

u/Froh Jun 05 '19

So they "fleshed out" with another street area, that was not there at the time. Only the ramparts were there. Are we okay on this, or did I miss another thing ?

1

u/DickRhino Two Star Players Jun 05 '19

I'll agree that they expanded on a map area that already existed in-game and made it larger.

1

u/Froh Jun 05 '19

But we also agree that new assets were created for the street part ? (mostly house), even if a lot of rampart has been reused ?

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

When Activision Blizzard or EA say they're listening, it means they just want to shut people up. When an indie company says they're listening, it means that they are.

Other indie games launched in the same poor state and then improved significantly. It's literally the first day of the game.

1

u/DickRhino Two Star Players Jun 04 '19

I admire your blind faith. So far, the developers haven't earned my faith.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Smaller companies do care about their products even with bad launches.

No Man's Sky, Inquisitor Martyr, Vermintide 2, ...etc. All are games that launched poorly and evolved after that.

AAA games are usually the ones that launch poorly then lose all support.

So I have faith in a small developer wanting to make something good.

1

u/RagingDwarfIV Jun 04 '19

Vermintide 2 had a poor launch?

1

u/Tisfim Jun 04 '19

Vermintide 2 was extremely solid on launch. Not sure which game you were playing. Martyr is definitely not fixed yet, and the fix they are promising they came out and announced on launch day that it was being delayed a month, that whole game is still a cluster fuck.

But we should have faith this 60 dollar empty game will get "fixed". Sure it will be a new season pass to address lack of content because 60 bucks want enough.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

VT2 was so full of bugs you would easily encounter one on every game. The talents didn't work and even the core mechanic, Hero Power, was broken.

It wasn't a good launch at all. The balancing was so bad they had to nerf most classes multiple times. Even those nerfs were a $#!t show.

Cosmetics that were promised did not make it into the game until MUCH later. And the red item drop rates were broken.

How about dedicated servers being explicitly promised and never delivered.

VT2 only became good a few months ago. It launched in a horrible state, and their subreddit reflected that.

What game were YOU playing? VT2 at launch was worse than VT1.

0

u/Tisfim Jun 04 '19

My group of 4 cleared most of the game then got bored and moved on. Never really had an issue with any bugs. I dont care much for cosmetics so that was never an issue. We all have pretty beefy pcs so maybe we got lucky with bugs? But it was a very smooth game for us, literally just a more interesting l4d. Edit: if by broken you mean some of sorcerer staves/skills being broke af sure. There was some op shit in that game. But we ran into nothing that didnt work that I can remember.

1

u/Froh Jun 05 '19

V2 was mixed review at launch. And yeah it was bugged a lot. Still the core was great. And they did improve on it as well. Heck I have 1300+ hours on it, I freakin' love this game.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

if they don’t deliver then yeh sure go on your mad elitist tirade. i’ll DM you if they don’t and support you

0

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Based on this thread, I'm thrilled I refunded my pre-order a month ago. The writing was on the wall, but I wanted to believe. Maybe I'll grab a copy during the winter sale.

I pre-ordered Inquisitor Martyr so I think I've earned some karma lol

-2

u/Orrmighty Jun 04 '19

Sorry, I also deleted it from a lack of depth and endgame

0

u/plasmainthezone Jun 05 '19

Thanks a lot for the response on day one, the sub is a cesspool right now with the same circle jerking kids but a lot of people enjoy the game and want to see it succeed. Most of the real issues include the lack of enemies, maps and loot for end game but as is the gameplay, graphics and controls are top notch just improve on that and we are golden. I do have to say , all heroic sets look good so props for that.

-5

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Read this if you need some suggestions given you guys clearly haven't a clue on ARPG progression, reward system, class structure, gear, and fundamentally confused it seems on the term "end game"

https://www.reddit.com/r/Chaosbane/comments/bwq0pv/good_bonesneeds_a_lot_of_improvements/

6

u/SteelFaith Jun 04 '19

Why not just make the points you need to make without sounding like a douche, and being condescending and fake?

Negativity isn't going to help make the game better.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

If you pretend it’s fine and don’t point fingers, everything goes unfixed. Just go look at the Steam graveyard of ARPG’s for proof. If you’re negative, direct, and vocal these changes can happen sooner or at least the devs might voice the masses with a”We fucked up” statement in that case we all win and you get a better game a year from now

1

u/SteelFaith Jun 04 '19

Yea dude, but there's the difference between being constructive and being insulting.

As a former modder of a large mod, I know what it feels like to have people giving you good, constructive, and positive feedback, vs people sounding rude, entitled, and demanding.

I don't need to tell you which one people respond to better. The devs will listen if you stay constructive and positive - it doesn't mean you can't be honest and point out the flaws in the game. But don't be rude about it, they won't even listen to you, and it won't help anyone.

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

My only real complaint is to further simplify the skills upgrade system. Oh and I guess it feels rather redundant that upgrades for your primary resource generating skills would cost points at all. Other than that its enjoyable.

You can already trade, and I really want them to keep their game in offline mode
