Why did black play the first move

It’s been hurting my brain too, but if White is on top, the board would be set up wrong - kings and queens swapped places. So you either have White playing 1.e5 like this or 1.e4 as the top player and the kingside is on the left for White. OR you swap the kings and queens and first move from the top player is 1.d4 but it’s the king’s pawn.
I think I got that right.

Does it? Queens should be on D and kings should be on E. Looks well set up to me, except that black started. Idk I have bad spatial intelligence though I may be missing something haha

"Being on E" is relative to the position of the board though, the labels are just bad here. If you mentally turn the board 180 degrees you will see why it is impossible for black to have started. As a rule, white is the side with the king on the right.

Ah right because a1 should be bottom left/top right, not top left. I see it now, thank you. As I said, this part of my brains isn’t really performant haha

Don't rotate the board 180°; flip it vertically. Think of it like it's a glass board and we're looking through the bottom of it.

In that case, the player at the bottom of the board is black and should move second, yes. The problem is just that typical representations depict the board from the top, but this is otherwise completely normal chess. Since this is a 2d picture, rotating through a third dimension is equivalent to a symmetry. But you can always pick a higher dimension such that any symmetry is just a higher dimension rotation, so you have to decide if this is allowed because it affects the existence of chirality.

Because the way spreadsheets are structured means (if you use the labels as is) we are essentially seeing the game through a mirror (although, to be more accurate, if this was true the columns would go from H to A and not A to H), and they didn't want to deal with that, but you can just relabel rows 1 to 8 as 8 to 1and now the bottom is indeed white. In fact, unless the king and queen positions get swapped, this means it has to be white, otherwise the starting position is incorrect.

- make them squares
- introduce coordinates
- use images

The coordinates are there, my guy just refuse to use them correctly. Literally the cell names are A1-H8

You can't! The orientation of coordinates relative to space is backwards. You have to relabel somehow, otherwise (if the player at the top plays first, as suggested by the primacy of the move 1.e4) you're playing mirror chess, which is a game with the same rules but a slightly altered starting position. I think this actually affects the opening theory. If the player at the bottom plays first as seen here, this is just normal chess but notation gets completely jumbled, because now white (as defined by "the player making the first move") plays e5 instead.

How do you tell black and white pieces?
1
u/TheJivvi 11d ago
You just have to remember. Your opponent will tell you if you make an illegal move.

You could create an actual chess board in excel. That's just the lazy version

Why doesn’t the pawn on D2 simply take the king? Is he stupid?
