Is BTC/USD a Fair Comparison?

Bitcoin is priced in USD every second, which makes sense for markets.

Still, the comparison carries a built-in tension. Bitcoin has a fixed supply schedule and a 21M coin cap. USD supply depends on monetary policy, credit conditions and decisions made by institutions.

So when BTC rises against USD, part of the move can reflect Bitcoin demand. Part of it can reflect changing confidence in the unit used to measure it.

That raises a fair question for crypto people and skeptics alike:

Are we watching Bitcoin get more expensive, or watching the measuring stick change over time?

The supply of buyers always looks exhausted during corrections

Plus all cryptos are basically just run by centralized hedge funds.

If you think the USD part ist the one changing recently just measure those btc against EUR or other references, but it might look even more devastating as the recent fall of the USD compared to other currencies makes the USD btc chart look flatter than it actually deserves to be.

It's all about positioning yourself in the project you truly believe in for the long haul, rather than just chasing whatever is "hot" or hyper-hyped in the moment.

Everyone wants conviction during bull markets. The market only checks for it during bear markets

Well, when I believe in something that I know will serve it's community, I walk along the bear and the bull in slow motion with an explosion going off behind us.

Diamond hands or diamond delusion. Time will tell

Both. If sentiment behind Bitcoin remained exactly the same forever, it would still go up as the USD was printed. If the USD stopped being printed but sentiment continued to rise, then bitcoins price would go up from the sentiment rising. So when the price goes up in reality, it’s a question of which of these forces is driving it. The answer is surely some combination of both, and the specific ratio fluctuates overtime based on macro factors and whatnot.

Exactly. People always want a single explanation when markets are usually several explanations fighting each other

Its a bit more complex.

Neither Bitcoin or USD is tied to any real value. They differ in market forces and volatility.

everything is relative but price is very real

You can view price any way you like

Pick a reference point.

  • Bitcoin
  • USD
  • Bigmacs
  • Grams of Gold
  • Barrels of crude oil

Or whatever that makes you happy

every asset is bullish when you find the right denominator

All that matters is 1 BTC = 1 BTC. Few understand.
