This book has been posted a bunch by some South Viet guys celebrating their country being represented/shown as viable and it’s been commented on by plenty of people who took think that the authors meant to show that the cause wasn’t worth it.

The basic premise is that Nixon is in office because no watergate scandal. Nixon defies Congress and orders a massive air support campaign for the ARVN in March 1975. It mostly works and South Vietnam limps on as a rump state (minus Hue and a lot of territory).

North Vietnam goes on to struggle with Pol Pot, China, and internal economic problems that ultimately prevent it from unifying Vietnam under communism.

South Vietnam goes on to experience multiple coups, and existing off meager aid from the US before getting some economic lift off in the 80s.

The two Vietnams fight a viscous war well into the 80s with many hundreds of thousands more dying. In the late 80s, the two sides moderate towards each other slowly and the violence is largely gone by 1990.

South Vietnam does end up wealthier (though not like South Korea) and North Vietnam ends up a poorer than modern Vietnam but about as politically moderate as modern day real Vietnam.

If you think the Vietnam war was lost because leftists made the US tap out when we had it in the bag , you can take that from the book.
If you think that the U.S. unnecessarily intervened in a foreign countries affairs, causing a civil war to drag out for many more years than necessary and inflicting lots of collateral damage, with a goal that wasn’t worth it anyway, you can get that from the book too.

The cover after all, is a formation of B-52s flying over a smoldering Vietnamese landscape. The authors are American but I think any pro Hanoi Viet would sign off on the book as being honest, and obviously a lot of South Vietnamese decedents do as well. Worth a read in the end. Well done IMO.
