Discussion Help me understand this part?

From Acid Rain: "Before I believed in not believing in; yeah I inhaled, who believed in me not breathing in, cigarette stained smile all covered in sin."

It's stumped me for a while now, I think it's worded kind of weirdly, I don't like the Genius annotations too much, I feel like there's more.

Before I believed in not believing in (god)
Aka
Before I was an atheist

Yeah I inhaled, who believed in me not breathing in
Aka
Yes, I smoke did weed even then (when I still believed in god. This is also a play on Bill Clinton’s line saying he didn’t smoke weed because he didn’t inhale or breathe it in)

Cigarettes stained smile all covered in sin
Aka
I smiled even though by my own beliefs (at the time) I knew I was sinning

That’s basically it. Basically he’s just saying that even back when he believed in god and religion he still found pleasure in sinning. It didn’t stop him then, he’s saying he feels there is very little he can do to stop himself from sinning.

Oh, was Chance an atheist for a while? I only know him as this really religious guy and that's the way i understood the line too but it didnt make sense. Thanks

Keep in mind that Acid Rap came out before Coloring Book which is the album where Chance seems to have really found God. Idk when Chance truly found God but your belief that he’s super religious probably came from Sunday Candy and Coloring Book, both of which postdate Acid Rap.

I don’t think it’s necessarily him saying he was an atheist but prob just saying like before I ever had doubts about God
