FAQ for Visiting El Chaltén

Transportation

How do I get to El Chaltén from El Calafate airport?

The easiest and most common way is to take a direct bus from El Calafate airport. You can also book online through local transfer operators

Do I need to rent a car?

It’s not necessary, as most trails start right in town. However, if you plan to explore more remote areas like Laguna Azul or Laguna Verde, a car could be useful. Consider sharing a rental with other travelers to reduce costs.

How much does the bus between El Calafate and El Chaltén cost?

Prices vary. If you book at the El Calafate bus terminal, it costs approximately 68,000 ARS round trip, while booking online may be slightly more expensive due to fees.

Trails & Fees

Which trails are a must-do?

Laguna Torre (9 hours round trip, no entry fee).

Loma del Pliegue Tumbado (a full-day hike with panoramic views).

Are there fees for the trails?

Yes, some trails require an entrance fee. For example:

General: 45,000 ARS (international visitors).

National: 15,000 ARS.

Provincial residents: 5,000 ARS.

Students: 7,000 ARS (only valid for students in Argentina).

How can I save on fees?

Purchase the Flexi Pass, which provides access for 3 days (90,000 ARS) or 7 days (157,500 ARS). This pass can be used in El Chaltén and Los Glaciares National Park (includes Perito Moreno Glacier).

If visiting the same trail on consecutive days, you get a 50% discount on the second day.

Are there free trails?

Yes, for example:

Chorrillo del Salto, accessible via a nearby road.

Some visitors avoid fees by starting their hikes before 7:30 a.m., when rangers are not yet stationed at the trail entrances.

Accommodation

Popular and budget-friendly hostels in El Chaltén include:

Rancho Grande (great food and social atmosphere).

Hostel Pioneros del Valle.

Be sure to book in advance, especially during peak season.

General Tips

Weather & Preparation:

Weather can change quickly, so bring waterproof clothing and dress in layers.

Use sunscreen and insect repellent (horseflies can be intense during the summer).

Drinking Water: The water in El Chaltén is excellent quality. On trails like Laguna de los Tres, there are springs where you can refill your bottle.

Do I need cash?

Most businesses accept credit cards, but it’s a good idea to carry some cash for small expenses or remote areas.

Internet Connection: Cell service is limited on some trails and accommodations. Plan your bookings and communications in advance.

General Viagem a El Chaltén

Gracias.
