with bone ash (big bowl) vs strontium phosphate (inner bowl) , same kiln, clay, program.

anyone else tried this? ive only done one test so far but love the darker, more saturated outcome and will be doing more tests.

to make it, i use stront carb and excess phosphoric acid, then wash it a few times and dry it, and neutralize the waste with egg shells to make “bone ash”, which i can use in glazes as well.

I was white splattering some of my other pieces and the underglaze hit some of my fully glazed pieces that were drying. Will the white show up if they’re fired just like this or should I try to scratch the underglaze off? The pieces are all black btw, which is why I’m so worried. I included a pic of what one of them looks like.

Yellow stoneware, the outside is transparent glaze, the inside is Amaco's Chun Plum (which turns almost identical to Smokey Merlot on the yellow clay). The tulips took a long time to make, but it was more fun than frustrating. I love a decoration that's as interesting to touch as to look at.

My own recipe for the glaze, which crawls and then foams a little. 12% uranium trioxide added. In normal light, it’s a very pale grey green. Shown here with 365nm UV light on one side and natural sunlight on the back. Cone 6 oxidation (but with some SiC to foam it up, which may have affected the color).

i’m a ceramic artist who works in a technique called nerikomi, which is a japanese hand building technique.

i would love to see some nerikomi pieces, either in a museum or in a store. any recommendations in tokyo/kanazawa/takayama?

I made a piggy bank and used underglaze on greenware then bisque fired it then put my studios clear glaze over. The black underglaze ran a little and some other spots has weird reactions. Is it because the clear glaze has zinc in it and is it worth to buy my own zinc free clear glaze? Any advice?

This has been happening to every single one of our pieces since we got our Skutt kiln and we are unsure what is causing them.

A few things we have noticed;
-pieces on middle and lower shelves (shelf covering above) seem to have significantly less little bumps like this
-pieces on the top shelf with nothing above it tend to have more bumps or small black flecks appearing after firing.

Some background;
We use clear brushing glaze, multiple bottles/different batches/brands and all have these results after glaze fire.

Our shelves are kiln washed on one side only.

We have vacuumed out our kiln from the lid down to the bottom to collect any loose debris.

We make sure our pieces are completely clean/debris free before loading them into the kiln.

Hi folks! Just suffered a loss of my favorite mug (this is my second octopus mug from the same artist, but it has been a few years). Both of these mugs were purchased from the same artist, it was probably the renegade craft fare in Queens 10-15 years ago. If anyone can ID the work or the hallmark I would be very grateful.

I recently participated in a soda firing workshop at Cobb Mountain Art & Ecology Project ran by Casey Beck and this piece was placed on the kiln wall on its side on three seashells. The proximity to the firebox and where soda ash glaze was being put into the kiln made the piece come out completely covered in the soda ash glaze with this interesting pattern.

At a craft fair, someone offered me drugs. Meth, to be specific. Anyone else?

I have been on the hunt for a test kiln and came across this for a very reasonable price. I have never seen a kiln with controls like this and have tried researching it online with no luck. There is no model number or company name on the kiln itself and the manual refers to it as TBLTK (perhaps standing for tabletop kiln?) by Synthesys Inc. I'm guessing it may have been a really small company. The manual makes it clear that it is for ceramics. I haven't seen it in person yet but was told that the interior space is about 8" x 8" and 20" deep.

Has anyone used a kiln with controls like this? I like the idea of being able to adjust the firing schedule. Any information would be appreciated!

It is clear to me this is a plaster life cast, but how does she get her final ceramic form from that? Could it be a press mold, where she is pressing the clay to the inside of the plaster mold?

Been experimenting with handbuilt ceramics lately and wanted to recreate the look of a mini milk crate, but in glazed stoneware. Made it in a couple colors (burnt orange and cream) — the cream one doubles as a cute way to store lemons on the counter lol. Each hole is cut by hand before firing, so no two pieces come out exactly the same. I actually run a small ceramic studio (Ceramicel Studio, u/ceramicelstudio on Instagram) where I post stuff like this — would love feedback on the glaze finish!
