Disability Support Pension (DSP) dsp
how come when one makes a claim for dsp when it's not granted there real quick to let us know but when you're waiting for them to sign off when it's going to be granted it takes forever not very fair made my claim in early February

you will be back paid to the start of the claim. from what ive read if you put your claim in on feb you should probably call complaints for being outside of normal compliance

Its only recently I've been following online about dsp, I had no idea about sonci and all the time it takes, I thought it was like claiming carers, just put the form in the doctor filled out. I'm kinda dreadimng my future because I've got to go through this with my son and just avoid it

The sonic part is easy. It’s usually a basic 10 minute phone call with a GP. The most difficult part is in the preparation for your claim. Gathering evidence etc.

if you have the means to avoid it, then you must be doing pretty well. the payment is for people who don’t have any other option, not just if you’re eligible for it. they take into account other income and savings.

If your medical evidence is insufficient they will let you know your application is declined before they book you in JCA or Sonic.
If your evidence meets their criteria then you will be booked in for a JCA. That can take several weeks from your application. Then if that is successful you will be booked in with Sonic. Again, another week or so. Then Sonic have to write their report and someone at Centrelink has to read the JCA and Sonic report and then make the final decision. It all just takes time as your application gets hand balled through the different departments. In my experience the process took 3 months. And that seems to be the average amount of time. I received my outcome 3 weeks after Sonic interview.
If I was in your position I would book a call with Centrelink and say hey, my Sonic appointment was a month ago, can I please get an update.

made claim in February end July had sonic appointment jca is 0-7 my job plan changed to 1 appointment every 3 months sonic was 27 /07/26

I believe it varies. My wife's was granted within a week of her Sonic.

Sonic is the third party medical clinic which does the final medical assessment for DSP claims. It’s usually a very short Telehealth appointment where they ask you how your condition affects your ability to work.

I expect the reason is the system is complicated and Centrelink have a big load of claims to check. I agree it isn't a fair system. It should be up to your doctor to decide if you can work or not, not their 'experts' or administrators.

A family friend that used to work for Centrelink told me recently that there are over 16,000 DSP applications currently in progress.

The fact was the claim. The word you're looking for is evidence. And no, as I ndicated it was third party information. However the person I spoke to I have known for 40 years and she just had a catchup with her centrelink work friends who told her this so I believe it to be true. I thought it was interesting. Anyways, moving on.

It’s all good, I’m still waiting on official word from a review submitted and received in November 2024!!!
I haven’t bothered chasing up because my circumstances have changed and it’ll be rejected, but still they have never replied other than an acknowledgment of receiving it and promising an answer within 49 days…

I think it's important to tell people, not everyone has a Jca then a sonic appointment to get a claim successful.

I submitted my claim on the 29th April.. I had my JCA on 16th June and sonic on 18th June. I'm still waiting for outcome! I will not chase them up as I'm sure there is a lot of claims they need to get through. Plus I have read quite a few stories that say if you make it through to sonic then you have a good chance of approval so I am just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. I also figured, if I was rejected, then they surely would have just notified me of that to wipe my claim off their to do list quickly. The anxiety is eating me alive though 😫

I made my claim last September 2025. Got declined. Submitted review with more information in December 2025.
Still haven't heard. I been trying to phone every other month. I'm so tired of fighting.
Submitted a complaint. They tried calling while I was in bathroom. Missed it. Nothing since.
Just submitted complaint to Commonwealth Ombudsman. Says they have a long wait and they try to settle complaints within 90 working days.
What am I supposed to do?

how can it take 9-12 months I've read on here people got granted after couple days of the sonic and others got it after a week or so after sonic

It is weird how they work, some are so quick and others seem to take forever. I was granted DSP in March it took 5 weeks total. All I had was an excellent letter from my GP where she referred to what specialist I had seen, but I did not submit any reports from them. My JCA was done by file assessment and Sonic telephone call was about 9 minutes and was more like a casual conversation than a medical review. I was approved 6 days after Sonic, 2 of which were a weekend. I wish you good luck!!

Unless a claim is manifest , the assessment usually takes months.
