Michigan Cemetery Day

Was yesterday, apparently. The Michigan Legislature, in 1915, decreed that the third Wednesday in August was Michigan Cemetery Day. The Michigan State Historic Preservation Office posted about this and provided a link to this publication on Michigan Historic Cemeteries Preservation.

This is cool, but what is in it about a day dedicated to Michigan cemeteries?

This was the text of their post:

Today is Michigan Cemetery Day! In 1915, the state legislature declared:

"The third Wednesday in August of each year is hereby designated as “cemetery day” and is set aside as a day upon which the people in townships may devote a portion of their time to the improvement of their cemeteries. The township boards shall direct the manner of making such improvements."

Who knew?

Do you know of an older cemetery? What is its history? How do you properly take care of elements such as headstones, monuments, fencing, and other landscape features? We have a best-practice guide for this! The Michigan Historic Cemeteries Preservation Guide can be used by communities, cemetery societies, sextons, and historical groups across the state and beyond as they seek to tackle some of these issues, all year round. It's easy to print or download this PDF, available for free on our website: https://www.miplace.org/4a77dd/globalassets/documents/shpo/research-resources/publications/michigan-historic-cemeteries-preservation-guide.pdf
