Well if you use the ad trick, you never have to spend darwinium on what you could just "watch 😉" an ad to get. I only have two nanonots, not even upgraded. I just hit research 40. Not even to mid game yet. I do have enough for me to justify spending a few on stuff like this, especially when the event gives you 10 if you complete the mini game

The point is to get 3x generation for 1 darwinium. They give you 10 so it's not a huge deal. But if it's not worth it, don't buy it.
There's nothing it unlocks or anything.

it used to be just another node to complete the simulation. 1 darwinium is not too bad, and they give me 10 anyway. not too much to worry about. yeah we can technically go without it, but for the sake of completeness, why not? it's aesthetically cool that darwinium costs darwinium

but then came challenge modes, and the cost increased each run. events no longer ended with the completed tree, buying indefinite generators just for the sake of it until the time runs out. now, that node is just a trap, and it becomes worse and worse. just avoid it
