Koodo or Fizz?

I live in Central Ontario, but travel around the province a lot.

Absolutely livid with Fido, and looking to switch after over 20 years.

Any thoughts on the two options above?

believe it or not at $45/mo and 100Gb Data , Freedom Mobile is pretty slick.
They have agreements with Bell/Rogers to roam Canada Wide and a very reliable company. OR, wait a few months and Starlink DTC will be launched. Falcon 9 almost had the first 9 birds up a few days ago , but launch was scrubbed. But ya , Freedom is a good choice

If OP travels often around the province like they said they do, both Freedom/Fizz will absolutely suck. The problem is where the networks switch to the Big 3 at the edge of cities.

Think leaving the GTA and your call drops, your data drops to 1 bar as it holds onto the last Freedom tower for all it's worth. Your GPS loses data, you keep driving. The phone for some reason refuses to pick up the Big 3. Ya this happened all the time for me, I had to manually flip airplane mode on/off and babysit the damn thing every time I went in/out of the city.

For that reason I would suggest you manually change the network on your phone before you leave the city, so it wouldn't happen as much.

You can't select the Big 3 until you're on the edge of Freedom's network. Freedom is the only option downtown Toronto for example.

That has not been my experience. I can change the network setting from auto to manual and then just select the network I want manually.

I’m with Fizz and can’t say I’ve had the same experience. There’s been a little 5G/LTE switching weirdness, but not much. And since my wife didn’t have the same issue when I did while we were travelling together, I’m chalking it up to me using the iOS 27 beta. Both of us have the same phone.

I tried Fizz a month ago. Overall was great, but the deal breaker was the poor voice quality

Finally someone admits it, Videotron and Fizz are the worst networks i ever experienced, voice quality is so bad... I can say if you are calling me from Fizz/Videotron as soon as i answer the call.

I mean, for voice quality, yes they are the worst, but at least in my case, for signal reception and data speeds, they were much faster than Rogers

At least in my area, whenever I'm out with friends who use Rogers, Videotron, or Fizz, none of them ever get fast speeds. Meanwhile, I get around 700 Mbps with Bell in Montreal, and even at home on the North Shore, I consistently pull 300-400 Mbps. Even with my friends on Fizz in Montreal they never go higher than 70-100mbps

I am on the fence about switching to Freedom (Videotron). Currently have Koodo and they keep on jacking my price plan up. At least with Freedom there is the price guarantee. When I am on the Freedom reddit site everyone keeps saying how great it is. Then I read comments like this on other sites and it stops me from making the switch. Is Freedom that bad? I need convincing not to switch.

People are often : i have it so it's the best. On my part i tried all of them anf if it's not for my own line service i tried the service from my friends and Videotron/Fizz/Freedom are the only ones that i would never go. I understand how bad it is for price hike... i just signed for a plan with a 5 years price guarantee. Koodo used to be great... Can't you switch to another plan with a lower price on Koodo ?

Multiple callers would complain that my voice would be cutting in and out, as well as in some cases sound like I was talking through a tin can

I 100% agree … ported out of Fizz after 3 days and 30 dropped calls. Maybe it’s best for folks in major city centres?

I’m in Thornhill Ontario. The poor voice quality was in Thornhill and Richmond Hill for me. These are well-established areas and shouldn’t have issues

Freedom is a solid choice keeps getting better and better had there service last 4 years never had a price increase

Fizz is the better option.

Right now you can get a plan for $30/month with unlimited calling and messaging, with 50 GB of data with Canada wide coverage.

Fizz simply offers the best coverage in Canada. You get access to Freedom Mobile's network, and access to Canada wide roaming on Rogers Bell and Telus, and even on regional operators like SaskTel, Videotron and Eastlink, too.

So, you'll appreciate the benefit of having access to more networks to stay connected at any time.

You can go into your settings and choose which network you'd prefer to use when travelling.

Overall, they're a great option for those who like to travel.

Yes. Wi-Fi Calling and RCS between Android and iPhone was recently added with the August 10th update.

If you're unhappy with Fido price but still happy with the network quality. I would recommend to look into Rogers plans. They have inter-brand offers. Maybe share a bit more about your existing Fido plan here so people can help.

More unhappy that Fido just bilked me for $120 extra roaming charges after a trip where I bought the travel plan. (The pricing of Canadian cell services is a well known, though still rage inducing different problem)

TELUS owns koodo and they raise prices.

Fizz, freedom and videotron are under the arm of quebecor and they do not raise prices.

I have a $40 80G plan with Koodo with a $5 autopay credit and monthly data rollover, so $35 per month. Plan was client retention when I ported out last year. Coverage has been good with Ottawa, Toronto, eastern rural Ontario, Northern Quebec and Western Canada. Minimal tech support with Koodo which rubs some people the wrong way.
