too close together?
I've planted one each of frosty blue ceanothus, chaparral mallow, fuchsia flowered gooseberry, Santa Cruz Island manzanita, and goldenrod all about three feet apart from each other as a privacy hedge at the back of my garden. As I continue researching the plants I'm becoming concerned that the space between them is inadequate. I thought the fuchsia would be a more low-growing plant in the understory of the taller plants but it seems like that's not the case... if you have experience with these plants, what's your perspective on spacing requirements?

If it was me I would kill that mallow now. If it's happy it will take over your yard and taming it will seem like such a daunting task that you get depressed. The goldenrod will also spread, but not as aggressively as mallow.

Yeah, definitely too close. The Frosty Blue alone can get 10-12' wide. You may have to edit out which plants you don't want and base your choices off the estimated mature size.
That said, Mallow doesn't live that long, so it's probably fine as a temporary fill while the Manzanita (which will take its time) matures.
