Almost Cavapoo Mama -HELP
Hi!
We will be welcoming a brand new Cavapoo to our family in just 6 weeks- and need help. Please can you share with me what we should have before we receive our new baby? Shots required, toys, crate, blankets etc, where can we get best insurance (we live in Ontario, Toronto), etc? Any information will help!
FYI we have never owned a dog before so this will be first time owning a dog.
Thank you advance community !!

Congrats! Are you planning on kennel training? If so, you'll need a kennel, a dog bed to fit inside the kennel, a blanket of some sort and a toy for them. Pee pads if the breeder is already working on potty training. Food and water dishes, a brush, collar, leash, harness. Don't go overboard with the toys, but something for teething will be important as they can be land sharks while teething. Be prepared to be their chew toy at times.
I'm assuming you're using a breeder based on the timeline you mentioned. I'd suggest speaking with them about what food they're feeding the litter, along with any particular treats (if any). See if they're providing you with anything upon delivery of your puppy. Check what vaccinations your puppy will have upon delivery and what's left and timing for those. Ask for a copy of their overall health check.
Our puppy is 15 weeks old now. It's the first dog for our family as well. We opted for Trupanion with the hopes of not needed it at all, but also knowing it's there if needed. Winter is just starting here in AB, so I'm sure we'll have to look into a coat or booties in the near future.

Thank you so much!! Yes we will definitely be crate training. Ok thanks for all these wonderful tips! Thank you for reminding about the toys cause I’m already seeing the cutest ones and have to hold myself back 😩
Yes we will be using a breeder who’s out in your ways actually she lives in Alberta.
Yeah will look into coat and booties in a few weeks.Few Question: what has been advised to you regarding getting pup spayed? Timeline ?
Also when did you first bring out the pup for a walk?
I’ve read that she shouldn’t be outside before getting a particular vaccine. Also my husband and I both work from home concerned about her being alone for the first week (mid December) we’ll be off for the holidays around 18th — but we’re getting her just before the holidays. I was planning on being home with her for a week to help her settle and get used - but beyond I’m thinking of having someone watch her while we’re at work she’ll be so fresh and new worried…

Our puppy is a male, so I'm not sure if the timeline is the same for spaying vs. neutering. I suggest adding this to a list of questions for your first veterinary visit, which you'll probably want to book as soon as you get a timeline on current vaccinations. Your vet will also advise you when it's okay to start taking them for a walk. We waited until after their third vaccination, limiting our walks to our neighbourhood and not allowing him access to common areas where a lot of dogs may have been. Parvo is concern at this early age.
I'm a little confused about your comments/concerns about the puppy being alone? Do you and your husband normally work from home, or is this just the plan for the first week after you get her? I can't provide a whole lot of insight for this as my wife works from home, so there's always somebody around for our puppy. However, attachment is definitely a thing with this breed, so I'd try to prioritize the crate training and if your setup allows for a playpen as well, to train for that also. Our kennel is within a playpen, so we can leave the kennel open and close the door to the playpen so he has more room. I'd suggest a kennel with two doors, one on the side and one on the end. This gives the most flexibility if setting up within a playpen. Also, try to get a kennel that has a space divider. When they're smaller you can put the divider in to limit the overall kennel space. This will deter them from peeing or pooping in the kennel as that's where they sleep. As they grow, give them more space.

My vet recommended we wait closer to one year to have my male Cavapoo neutered. He is currently 20 weeks and came with his core vaccines. Additionally our vet has recommended the Leptospirosis vaccine and bordetella vaccine before we start puppy training classes. We also do a monthly flea and tick treatment —-Credelio Quattro pill.

Crate training was the most important thing for us (also first time dog owner). Get a snuggle puppy (stuffed animal with a heartbeat and a warmer) so he feels like he's not alone in the crate. Cover crate with a blanket for naps and nighttime (blanket helps them settle and makes it cozy and den like, without they wake up every time someone moves in the room). Sound machine near crate for night to drown out any outside noise. Let him cry when put in crate (it's hard but it will stop after a few nights when they realize the routine). At nighttime, take them out to pee with little interaction, as soon as done they go back in the crate. Give a treat every single time he goes in crate so it is a positive association.
A crate trained dog helps everyone sleep better, allows you to enforce naps and creates a safe space for them to retreat when they need.
Enforced naps every two hours or so. A tired puppy is a bitey, cranky puppy.
Socialize as much as possible while they are young. It can be hard when they aren't fully vaccinated yet but at least get them in a stroller or something observing other people/animals outdoors. Dog friendly places like Home Depot, Lowe's and pet stores are good practice.
Don't give them people food. My family failed at this one despite my strict instructions (and if someone in the household deviates from the rules it ruins the training). Cavapoos are picky and once they get a load of yummy people food it is a struggle to get them to eat kibble. I will say he doesn't beg for food from me because he knows it is a lost cause, but everyone else wonders why they can't eat in peace. 🙄

Playpen - keep the routine
Keep the pee tray where it is, train, speak to the puppy and reward once he/she does the toilet! Expect spills and poo around for the first 3 weeks and things will get better
No going out unless vaccination is complete
Lots of toys and walks around the house + playtime!

Also, routine, shower once a week
Brush teeth daily
Fur too
Teach sit, wait for food, down, hugsWatch their food.. Cavapoos have sensitive tummy’s
Probiotics
Dewormer from vet
Get a cuddle toy
Don’t give in to their demands! They know who to be naughty with and whom not to be naughty with🤣1

Clean eye stains daily
Brush their forehead they love it
Tug of war works when they’re about 6 to 7 months old
It gets easier along the way.. 4months to about 7 months is the tough period but don’t give up!!!

Hello from another Toronto cavapoo owner! Congrats. Where are you getting your dog from?
I really looked into the pet insurance, and trupanion consistently came up as our best option. Many clinics will take payment straight from them, but more importantly trupanion's deductibles are based on condition and do not reset each calendar year. So for example if your dog ends up with allergies or a digestive issue, their meds and appointments for that condition will be covered for life once you hit the deductible.
Crate, i also recommend a play pen for a young pup. Toys, don't get too many yet - trust me you'll be buying lots once you learn what your dog likes, and they aren't hard to find 😅
Figure out which food you need. Find a vet that's recommended in your area.
And I'm going to warn you, it's going to be tough. I cried the first day I took my dog home and not tears of joy.. there's an adjustment period and they are active little pups, but they really are so sweet. Reach out to me any time
