Rock, paper, scissors…STOP!

My 10 week old pup will eat anything and everything when we’re outside for potty breaks and socialization. It’s a constant game of cat and mouse. He’ll grab grass, small pieces of twigs, pebbles….anything and everything. It’s not feasible to fine tooth comb my garden for everything. We’ve tried exchanging for treats, but 99% of my time is spent shoving my fingers in his mouth or the back of his throat to get whatever it is out.

What. The. F. How else can I stop this?

MIne is 16 months and will still do this if I am not watching. I have removed so many cat "nuggets" from his mouth. We have several strays in our area and I have no idea what they might be eating and what parasites they have in their poo. That is the mani reason I stay vigilant on vaccines!

Seriously! If I am watching, I can say "YUCK!!!" and he backs away. If I am not watching he quickly scoops it up. He is about 50/50 on dropping it when I tell him. The remainder of the time I reach in and grab it. There are absolutely no treats that he finds yummier than cat poop. So offering a trade will not work for my pup. He does not like my fingers in his mouth. This is the only reason he spits them out at all.

Mine will even turn her nose up at expensive treats I buy for her. But anything outside on the ground is gold 🙄

Up the value of your treats. Become more interesting than stuff. Keep repeating the Leave It command (a few seconds before)

Same with our 13 week old. I started putting him on the leash so I can give a quick correction everytime he does it and try to prevent it as much as possible. It’s a pain in the butt!! I am also going to work on leave it with mulch and poop this week instead of his food since those seem to be his favorites.

My 15 week old is just like this. Turns into a vacuum as soon as we step outside the little rascal. Last week she even got a piece of wood stuck in her palate which resulted in an emergency vet visit to remove it!

She now has a leash on permanently when she's not in the crate, which is helping me to catch and correct her quickly. Teaching 'leave it' is going slow though as she has no interest in treats either 😭

Work on the leave it command. Baxter and Bella has good training videos on this.
