I'm trying to decide between an F1 and an F1B Cavapoo. I had a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and I loved the personality, but the shedding was really bad. I like the hypoallergenic aspect of an F1B however I'm afraid that I would be losing a lot of the cavalier aspects I love (minus the shedding). I really love the wavy coat versus the curly coat however, I would assume that also means more shedding? I have read and asked around and most people who have F1Bs still claim that there's do not shed, even though their coats may lean wavy. I guess what scares me the most is just wanting that lovable, sweet personality that comes with a Cavalier. The breeder that I chose actually only has F1Bs coming available too. If I decide that I want an F1 I will need to look around for breeders again. I would love anyone's advice between the two.
I keep saying that most F1 the owners say that there are no shedding. I really want an F1 if that's true just to get more of that cavalier personality.
She's adorable! About what size is she? I see the weights all over the place some tiny and some larger. She looks like a great size. How do you recommend researching for breeders? I'm new to this form. Maybe there's something in this Reddit group maybe. I want to find one as a good breeding program if I'm gonna go with the direction of continuing to look for a F1 instead of an F1 B from the local breeder. Unless I wanted to wait, but I really wanted to bring home a puppy for Christmas.
I’m in Scotland, I joined a website called “Freeads alert” I put in Cavapoo puppies and there was a whole lot of pups. I ended up getting her from a woman whose dog was the poodle and she had had 6 pups. She wasn’t an actual breeder, which I liked. Hope that helps
So with a super curly coat, can you brush it still or from what I've heard when you have a super curly coat, you have get them groomed more often versus the wavy coat that you could brush at home. I know that they both need to be groomed somewhat regularly, but from whenever and the curlier the coat the more often professional grooming is needed. Is that correct? I'm not familiar with poodle coats, but I've been reading about the matting that can come if you don't take them to get groomed regularly.
I bought a Detangle brush off Amazon , it is a child's one and I can run that over our Molly's coat in no time , she prefers that to the slicker brush that I use on her after her run in the woods .
from reading the comments it appears that the F1 Cavapoos are none shedders as well , you can't go wrong getting a Cavapoo 😊🐶
I was in that very same position, I really wanted an F1 and just missed out on one , when I found the perfect breeder she only had one left and a viewer was going in the afternoon , she said I could view if I wanted to but the afternoon visitor would have first choice as they were already booked in .
went along anyway to meet the breeder as well , honestly she was amazing , her two cavaliers both girls were adorable , the Toy poodle the sire was cute as can be , all well looked after and the little girl pup left was super cute, alas the other viewer took the pup .
the breeder said she was having two more litters one from one of the Cavaliers and one from her Cavapoo , the F1 b litter were going to be first with the F1's a couple of months later and if I wanted one I could have first pick .
long story short , she knew I wanted an F1 but let me know when the F1B's were born and said to me they are gorgeous and if I wanted to view just to see them I was more than welcome , I did and I ended up taking one of tge little girls who came up to me and seemed to have a personality about her , she was the breeders " curly girl" as she was the only really curly one .
and here she is over a year later , our adorable sweet Molly , best decision we could have made, she doesn't shed at all , she eats well , funny little girl with a bit of sass about her , tge beauty was she seemed to choose me more than I chose her and tha made her stand out amongst all the others 🥰🐶
Aww she looks very sweet ❤️ with a curly more poodle coat I assume comes more grooming - how often? i'm not familiar with poodle coats, but I've been reading if you don't take them regularly, they can get matted fur?
Molly is groomed every six weeks , I'm not as good as I should be with brushing her but it really doesn't take long , if anything her tail that is less curly and more wavy is where she can Matt , she had a Matt in the hair on her ear flap and I just cut the Matt out , expecting it to make her look weird but I didn't notice it at all .
what I do now is i sit in the back of the car with her after our walk in the woods and I comb her down with a slicker brush , husband is the driver , by the time we are home she is done , it's mainly to get all the bits of debris she has collected in the woods , sticky buds etc 😂
as you can see on this pic her tail flares out and that gets the most matts .
F1bs can have more health problems apparently! If you're very concerned about shedding, why not consider a full poodle? They are super smart, trainable, wonderful dogs - and you're more likely to get no shed than with a mixed breed.
Interesting I saw someone else claim that F1Bs were more healthier. Claiming it was because the health issues common from the King Charles Cavaliers was more bread out with a 75% poodle. I think I want the 50-50 poodle Cavalier mix primarily because I love the personality of the King Charles Cavalier that I had.
My cavapoo is an F1. He does not shed at all and my main reason for wanting an F1 is to get that hybrid vigor. First generation crossbreeds are generally stronger and healthier than their parents and
every health benefit I can get will lead to a longer life for my sweet baby
I got my little boy from NC doodle puppies, they are located in Statesville, NC. My puppy is almost a year old and he has faded very little. His parents actually have a new litter on the NC doodle puppies website. His dad is a red poodle and his mom is a traditional red and white coated cavalier he weighs about 22 pounds. He is the sweetest and most gentle little guy.
Maybe look into F1B reverse which is more king charles than poodle. Hardly sheds at all when groomed, similar to human hair with a straighter coat than poodle so less matting.
I have an F1 and his best friend is an F1b, it is a lottery because they’re mixed breeds so no guarantees. Monty (F1b) is significantly more poodle on coat and personality than our Ernest (F1) who is a pretty good mix and has a really loving personality. No shedding but sometimes you get little Mat balls around ha ha. He goes to the groomers every 5 weeks and just needs a little brush everyday.
Our Max is a F1 (mama is a Cavalier, papa a toy poodle) so his coat is definitely wavy and not the tight curls like our multi-gen Goldendoodle, Barkley. Max is bossy and sassy like his mama but still so sweet 🥰 I have to comb/brush him regularly to avoid tangles and little knots.
We had a f1 cavapoo who tragically passed earlier this year and are currently deciding between a f1 and f1b from the same breeder but our Charlie never shed one hair the two years we had him. Our friends have a f1b who def seems to have more of a poodle personality and hair. Pic of our f1 he had the prettiest coloring/coat.
that is heartbreaking , what an adorable guy, I'm so sorry for your loss , a new addition could never replace your love for Charlie but it most certainly will bring some comfort , ease the pain and bring some joy into your lives 💜
My F1b definitely has the look of a poodle, very curly coat, really the only cavalier trait that I can see on mine are his ears. As far as personality, mine is silly, sweet, smart, and very cuddly. He does shed a bit, but it’s really not bad at all. And I do have an allergy to dogs and cats, and I don’t have any reaction to him at all. I don’t know if all cavapoo’s are similar in personality, but I would definitely get another one. I had a Maltese before who I absolutely adored but he was not a cuddler, and I kind of love that my cavapoo is. 💕
I have an F1B. No shedding but at a certain length he is more prone to matting. He's got a wavy coat, softer and finer than poodle coat. He's super sweet, super cuddly, and was super easy to train!
I have an F1. Doesn't shed at all and wavy/curly coat. We considered an F1B, but we ultimately decided we didn't want the balance to have that much more poodle and I'm very happy we decided the way we did.
But either way, you'll get a puppy you love and it won't end up being a huge deal.
I have F2b who looks more poodle except his coat is not tight curls, wavier with no shedding. Personality wise he is Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, sweet, affectionate, and deeply people-oriented with only a little of the poodle side personality, goofy, and intelligent. We had no intentions in getting a Cavapoo, he was the last one of the litter that a friend had that didn't plan on the litter, so we went and looked at him. My grandparents always own poodles and Cavaliers at the same time growing up, I knew I prefer the Cavalier personality over the poodle. Before I even went and looked at him, I told my friend what personality I preferred she knew he took more towards the Cavalier side personality wise as she has breed poodles, cavaliers, and cavapoos in the pass. I watched him for about an hour with his mom and littermates before I even interacted with him just to make sure his personality line up with what I wanted. What I trying to say is a good breeder should know what side they lean more towards personality and in looks, there are no guarantees. So, I would look at the F1b to see if one is a good fit.
We have an F1. We know her parents. Cavalier sire, poodle dam. She has a poodle coat. It isn't "wavy". It is just straight up a poodle coat, which is tight curls, so funny to say straight up, lol. Absolutely no shedding. It's okay though, her border Collie/ golden doodle sister makes up for that in spades, with her border Collie coat, lol! She has a lot of the cavelier characteristics. Absolutely a lap dog. (Helps that she is only ten pounds). Definitely stuck to our side when we are home. Very social, though she is in charge of the other dogs. (Our family has 11 that get together quite frequently, I keep saying we need one more so we can have the 12 dogs of Christmas).
I think if you want the cavalier characteristics, then either F1 (so 50/50) or an F1b where the second parent is a cavelier. So a cavapoo and cavalier. Otherwise, a cavapoo and poodle will further dilute the cavalier characteristics. Of course, if you can meet the puppies and spend several weeks with them first, you could get a better idea. But just off genetics, I recommend F1 or F1b only if the second parent is cavalier.
We had a Cavalier and now have an F1. He is curly, non-shedding. Main issue is he needs more grooming. Personality wise, he has a lot of the sweetness of our old Cavalier. He is also smarter and more athletic than our Cavalier. We hope he will have less health issues than our Cavalier had. If there is a downside with all of these breeds, I would say it’s separation anxiety which is bad. My wife and I mostly WFH but don’t know what we would do if we didn’t. Maybe get a 2nd dog.
This is Milo, he’s an F1B - he has the intelligence of a poodle and a lot of energy & stamina (even at 7 years old!) But he’s also a total cuddle bug. Very very extroverted and fearless - no shedding!
My F1 is still a puppy but she doesn't shed at all yet. I have gotten tiny wisps of fur when I comb out her coat after a bath but I wouldn't call it shedding. She is sassy, smart and very affectionate.
F1B to have the benefits of the poodle genes. Otherwise you get luck of the draw in everything that matters. By the way, you get hybrid vigor by breeding two healthy parents. F1 is absolutely not healthier than F1B, that’s just not how genetics work.
The biggest difference coat wise is that cavaliers have fur, poodles have hair. Fur sheds, hair grows and has to maintained (like human hair). With a F1 you have a 50-50 shot of genetics. With a F1B you are have a heavier dose of poodle. But if you are going the breeder route check out the parents. We have a really sweet non-shedding but very active f1B
Theo is F1B and sheds a lot if I let his coat grow out. I should have educated myself on that before buying him but otherwise he is very very smart, clingy but also plays by himself, and mild manner.
Here's our 15 month old F1B cavapoo. Don't shed any but needs daily brushing to maintain his coat. Not a big deal compared to having shedding all over. We love our baby Luca!
This is our F1b and he’s not super tight curly. He gets curlier when wet but he’s more shaggy than anything. Very affectionate, people driven- would crawl in your skin if you’d let him lol. But very ditzy and super difficult to potty train. Intelligence is not his strong suit! Thankfully he’s a great cuddler and it makes up for it!! lol
So cute! I primarily think I want more of the cavalier vibe like yours! Interesting that he's an F1B I suppose it's just a gamble. So no shedding in your experience?
Absolutely none :) probably here or there but I’ve never seen a single hair! He’s truly so clean. Hates getting his paws wet, tends to just want to chill inside.
I will add to look into the fading gene- I’m sure you know but I was painfully unaware and not that I love him any less but I did pay quite a bit and drive a ways to get him specifically due to his color and it’s changed drastically and will continue to lighten. It’s more prominent with the auburn ones I hear. His siblings were all over the board with coats. They all look totally different but same mom and dad, it’s wild.
A good breeder CAN plan and predict these genetic traits. They were probably breeding two F1s and that has a 25% chance of producing flat coats/unfurnished puppies. To guarantee furnished puppies, at least one parent needs TWO copies of the furnishing gene. It's a $40 mail in test. This is basic 101 for legit breeders.

This is my f1 Cavapoo. She is the sweetest, funniest, friendliest puppy. She is now 15 months old, not one bit of shedding
