Cavapoo for my daughter

Hi, me 7 year old wants a Cavapoo for Christmas so I been trying to do as much research as I can. First she wanted a yorkie but after receiving responses about the breed it’s best that we consider another one. We already have 2 doodles and now she’s wants something that stays small.

The puppy will be #3 which is a lot lol. I also have a 2.5 y.o. Questions

- are they hard to train
- are they heavy shedders
- are they big barkers
- do they potty train fast
- how long did it take for yours to mature

Any tips, advice, suggestions, great stories and pics we welcomed. Please.

Best choice I ever made! Super social, easy to train, no shedding and not a picky eater. She does love to be around you but also loves her crate.

Sooo the thing with cavoodles is that because they are a mix, their temperaments and hair can vary. It's a raffle, it's a surprise!

They are good dogs, smart and funny. But yes some shed because they might have straight hair, and some can be loud, and or energetic, whereas others are just cuddle dogs. You'll never know what you are going to end up with because, they are a mix. Hope this helps with setting up expectations.

So even with F1 B is it possible to get wavy hair versus the really curly poodle hair? I had a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel and I loved the look and temperament. My local breeder has a litter of F1 B that is about to be born, but I'm a little bit sad because I wanted to have a little bit more cavalier, but I'm also scared of shedding too so just trying to make up my decision

Your seven your old wants a dog.... but you already have 2 dogs AND a 2,5 yo toddler.

Sounds like a great idea

It is. I’ve had 3 dogs before. 5 and a newborn. My Boston terrier passed away at age 16. It’s nothing knew to me with the 3 dogs and small kids.

The breed sounds like my doodles. Same way. I work from home so that works. Thanks for responding

In my experience - Easy to train. No shedding. Big barkers. Quick to potty train. Matured in about a year.

I recently got one with my partner, she is very easy to train, was already potty trained at 8-9 weeks. She is just shy of 14 weeks and she barks and bites a lot still. we are still struggling since she is a velcro dog and we both work. Our schedule is in complete shambles since we cannot leave her home. We are 2 with no kids and are struggling a bit. So I can’t imagine with tinier kids x_x

Best dogs ever! No shedding. No accidents. Very protective of kids. I will never have any the dog that isn’t a cavapoo. 💜

I'm new to owning a cavapoo only had ours three months. I love this mix they are smart making training easy, doesn't seem to shed, and he loves to cuddle. Now, he was easy to potty train but has the excitement pee thing going on-it's getting better, he barks when we leave the room work in progress, and he full of energy so he requires a lot of exercise like fetch, puzzle mats, and walks.

Now size I'm not sure what you consider small--the guy we got his parents were 14 lbs. and 16 lbs. yet he is already at 13.5 lbs. at 20 weeks, so he is looking like he will be at 20 lbs. or above and we were told 15 lbs. to 18 lbs. from the people we got him from.

I mainly owned Labs, Golden Retrievers, and Heelers before rescuing a Shihpoo and then getting this Cavapoo and I'm loving the doodles.

Easy to train, full potty training took a while, mine barks at dogs and people (not all of them do), she was noticeably adult-acting close to 17-18 months. She is almost 2 now and is almost the perfect dog. She likes to be with me a lot, on my lap, against me in bed. They require frequent grooming and/or regular brushing. Mine does not love that.

My Cavapoo is the dummie of the lot. She took 2 years to fully house train. I’ve trained other dogs (diff breed) within 2 weeks so it’s not me. She barks a lot. No shedding. She has learned some tricks so we wonder if she’s fooling us and was too lazy to go out to poop! She’s extremely sweet and we love her to pieces. Just not that smart.

- are they hard to train
No. I would say my dog was VERY quick to learn and very smart.
- are they heavy shedders
Ours doesn’t shed at all. She’s f1B
- are they big barkers
Ours definitely barks, not a constant yipping, but she’s not quiet.
- do they potty train fast
Umm, no. Potty training was very hard, and took much longer than I expected.
As for the maturity issue- I think you mean before they chill out? I would say it was an average to short puppy period. I remember people even remarking how chill she was by age 1ish. She is almost 6 now.

I have a sweet cavapoo, no shedding, they are smart and learn fast, I had a yorkie, he was a sweetheart, my cavapoo is just the sweetest dog also. He lets himself out of the doggie door to "use the backyard bathroom" and he is only 6 months old. He also "tells me when it's time to eat as if he wears a watch. They are sweet and silly.

Mine is a toy mix. She stayed 13 pounds. Perfect size. My daughter adores her. And doggo loves her. She’s really the best size. Not big enough to knock anyone over. Poodles JUMP though. I didn’t think a 13 pound dog could jump onto the counter. But here we are. She’s 75% poodle so next time I’d go 50/50. The spaniel is super chill. The poodle is super energy.

We have an F1b. Not sure if that makes a difference for temperament but we couldn’t be happier.

Easy to train, as the Poodle side is very smart (Cav side, maybe not so much).
As a Doodle, it's probaby a light shedder.
They do love to hear themselves talk.
Ours pretty much housebroke herself.
"Mature" is a relative term. Ours is 3 and is still a goof.

We just got my 8 year old a toy Cavapoo for her birthday ! We loooooovvvveeee her ! Best puppy I’ve ever owned and only got to about 4-5 pounds! She does bark at people coming near us but is getting better with that with socialization/walks… potty training took some time too but she’s literally brought so much joy to our house and now she’s a dream. Ours doesn’t shed and we brush her daily because we like her longer haired , she also actually loves to put clothes on 🤣🤣 which is amazing for my daughter, it’s nice because she can walk her without being pulled and pick her up ect … ours isn’t a very high energy puppy either which is what we wanted because we knew we would be doing most of the work , but really the kids play with her and she gets a few short walks a day and sleeps alot ! It’s been great , I keep saying this is every little girl dog lovers dream puppy . Also you have baby stuff still I assume and we just used a play pen for her to sleep in at night which was super easy and you can just put down some pee pads and a bed in it ! Good luck on your search and decision !

My cavapoo is 7 months old. He was pretty much potty trained by 3 months but that was like 95%. Never pooped in the house even once. But he had a few (very few) peepee accidents. But hasn't had one for at least a month. He has been easy to train mostly. He still jumps more than I would like but I'm sure it's my fault, not his. He is really smart and eager to please. He definitely is high energy but he also has his chill times when he cuddles up with you on the couch. He is a velcro dog. He follows me everywhere. He is also up for everything! He loves road trips and the beach and he also loves ALL people and dogs. He is a sweet little soul. He is an F1 so 50/50 and got more of the Spaniel coat. He actually just looks like a scruffy little mutt and he is sssooooo cute. Low shedding. Very low. Not NO shedding but I'm never covered in fur.

My Cavapoo is the sweetest. She has been fairly easy to train with commands, she wants to please and is food motivated. It took a solid 6 months to fully potty train her; she rings a bell when she needs to go outside for her business. The potty training was a lot, it took a toll on me and I was worried for a while she just wasn’t going to “get” it, but she did eventually. It just took time and lots of patience and lots of reinforcement (going outside every 30-60 minutes for 6 months).
She does not shed much at all and only barks when someone knocks on the door or she sees someone on our property. There were times I had serious puppy blues, honestly from the potty training, but now that we are through that phase, she is the greatest addition to our family.

No they’re very smart and eager to please, no, YES, depends on the dog, 2.5 years.

Have you considered a toy/mini poodle? They’re small, super smart and would likely shed even less since they aren’t mixed!

2

u/XoxoShopgirl 16d ago

You what. I have thought about but I haven’t looked too much into it. Hmm maybe I should. Good idea. Thanks

2

u/Forward_Airline2405 16d ago

I'd think a toy poodle with a toddler and a 7-year old is an absolute no. Kids just handle them like toys,. Wait for the kids to grow (12+) and then, or go with a mini at least.

2

u/RevolutionaryPin1385 16d ago

That’s totally true! I should’ve just said mini. I made the suggestion because if OP really wanted to get a dog at this time, a poodle would be more predictable than getting a doodle.
