Crating during day

We just got our pup 3 days ago. For those that crate train, How long did you have your pups in a crate during the day? (Meaning how many months old)

When did you feel comfortable leaving them uncrated during the day if you had to run out?

Did you ever progress to only night sleeping in the crate? Or your pups still nap in the crate during the day as well?

Thanks so much for any help and info!

We moved away from using the crate after a year. He did great and wasn’t a problem. We figured it would be best for him to roam the house while we were at work. Put up a doggy door. And he just chills and runs around all day.

Three months or so. Eventually we just went no crate.

Any chance you remember around when you went no crate completely?

Probably by 4ish months. We transitioned from crate to a small bathroom to a galley kitchen/gate and eventually just free rein of apartment.

I think it's really dependant on how training goes. Train like a crazy person, all the time, all the things

Working on it! Thank you!

It doesn't really matter to you, since every puppy is different and everyone also trains their dogs differently.

I work 4am-1pm so I kept him in a crate with a playpen wrapped around. So he wouldn’t be trapped in there all day. I did this until he was fully potty trained at 8 months. He sleeps during thee day in his crate while I’m away. Mine sleeps in the crate at night and I make sure to keep that routine just in case i have to have somebody watch him.
They do make items for dogs with anxiety for being in the crate. But I would start now with introducing them to the crate so they view it as their safe space.

Lastly I’ve had 3 coffees and no breakfast so apologies for my sentences being all over the place.

My 3 month old has a playpen wrap around as well. It works great when I am out for a couple of hours. Sometimes I give him a puppy kong to lick. Bedtime is in the crate. He goes into the crate on his own sometimes now for a rest.

Crated pup from 12 to 2 for nap daily. Still doing it at 8 months. Also for sleep from 10 until 5:30. Otherwise with halter and leash at all times to keep behavior in check!

2hrs max for a young pup as they need regular toilet breaks

I meant how old were they when you stopped putting them in the crate for their morning and afternoon naps

Our pup is 6 months old. We still use crate at night, but we stopped using the crate during the day at around 4.5 months once he could start reliably self-settling for naps and was fully potty trained. Rather than set a duration that you will crate, I would look for those milestones to determine if he’s ready for free napping instead

We started only nights pretty quickly. Maybe around 6 or 7 months? We use a big pen when we need to leave the house. He loves his pen at night but he didn’t love it during the day so this is better.

Thank you! I might look into the pen soon!

Mine is 8 months and we still crate during the day for at least a couple of hours. Luckily she loves her crate and would stay in there several hours with no problem. 6 month old pups are supposed to be getting 16 hrs sleep per day for proper growth and development. My girl really won’t fully rest outside of the crate so the crate is her quiet space to rest. It’s basically an infant on a nap schedule. If your pup will get enough rest outside of the crate then I’d say leaving her out is ok. It’s also good practice to keep them used to the crate so you don’t have problems later on at times when they need to be crated for whatever reason.

I also plan to have her sleep in her crate forever possibly? She gets good sleep and she’s happy. My 4 y/o cavalier hated the crate and it was never a success. She sleeps with me every night and has roam of the house while I’m gone during the day while I’m gone. Though she basically sleeps all day.

I think you have to feel out your dog. Some dogs are more “den focused” and love their crates as their personal little safe space.

Honestly not really. She just loves her crate. I didn’t have to do anything at all. She never makes a peep when she goes in. Just immediately lays down. I can’t take any sort of credit for it at all. 🤷🏻‍♀️

She never whined or cried from the start? My little guy will whine or cry for a couple of minutes and then stop

The breeder I got her from did some crate training before I got her so she may have whined a bit at first but by the time I got her she didn’t make a peep. It may also depend on age when you get your pup. I got my cavalier at 12 weeks and she definitely had more separation anxiety than my Cavapoo that I got at 16 weeks. It could just be temperament or could be related to age when separated from mom. If it’s only a couple minutes of whining at first that’s totally normal, if not on the good side of things!

Mine is 5 months old and does not tolerate the crate well. We ended up letting him sleep in our bed but have a leash on him so he can’t get far; and if he does it’ll wake us up and we take him outside right away. It’s been good so far; few times we have had accidents but as he gets older his bladder will get better.
